Great to see some of the old rural theatres being revitalised and used by the community, rather than wasting away derelict and unloved or turned into 2nd hand furniture barns. The quirky architecture is part of character of these buildings and deserves preservation in it's own right. Congratulations to the people in country towns who are are enthusiastic about restoring these venues and infusing them with new life. A well-produced short film - hope it generates support for the cause!
I didn't imagine people in some tiny country town would want to see short films but then maybe they are more in tune with Australian culture, and how it's reflected on the screen, than a lot of the people in cities who think they are on the pulse of where it's all at! Good film and really well made!
Really interesting little doco, how come I'm not watching this on the ABC come Sunday afternoon? I'd love Bermagui to have a cool little cinema like this.
As someone else said "I want more", well, me too! Clearly the issues are just the tip of the iceberg like what's involved for the people putting together a short film festival? Loved the old theatre in Bombala. You can smell the history in that room with the film projectors.
Wow! Coming from a small country town myself, it's great to see how some communities are really rallying around aussie short films! If only there could be more groups like these across the country!
Thanks Greg! I have great memories of community cinemas in Glebe and Newcastle. Not sure if they have survived or not, but it is good to see resurrection happening in rural Australia!
Great mini-doco. Enjoyed viewing cinema from a regional perspective, especially the social focus. (But what about the seating!?) And a great soundtrack too!
Great short film about Australian short films. Gives a perspective on how people in the country valiantly struggle to bring culture to the bush. Well done Australian film makers!
Some short films are available via Newtown Flicks as part of their Australian Short Film Collection. The shorts featured in "Not The Last Picture Show" will likely be part of a forthcoming second collection. Check Newtown Flicks web site for details.
Film societies have to pay way over $1000 insurance a year just to
show a film to 20 people once a month. It's the very little towns
that can't afford it but they are the ones who need this sort of thing
the most. When the only options are the pub or knocking off hub caps,
these film events should NOT be expensive and available to all the
people.
