  • Brilliant live version

" I fumble for change, and pull out the Queen smiling, beguiling "

    Wow

  • one of the best songs ever

  • @redjude1 exactly my words mate :-)

  • One to three for file in the marrin' core, pass sucumb and follow more, wondering if ever tor will rise to Albion's surprise, yaye, Albion's sir prize.

  • bruce is so good.

  • So good!

reminds me of this band called FUZZ

  • BRILLIANT BASS PLAYING......

  • This song reminds me more than any other of what is was like to be teenager in London during the late 70's. You would go to see a band at the Red Cow pub then go back to Hammersmith Broadway Tube station to meet all the teds coming out of the H'smith Palais. We would then have a massive ruck (fight for the N Americans) and kick crap out of each other,...I'm now over 50, and should know better, but this was a really special time to be a teen in London and for music generally.

  • Watching this reminds me how much I hate the fact I was born in 1991. . . .

  • The Jam politics and music at it's best Love it. miss the nights at the Rainbow, Marquee etc.

  • paul's agression quite impressive, speed kills!!

  • I have a little money and a take-away curry, I'm on my way home to my wife. She'll be lining up the cutlery, I know she's expecting me, polishing the glasses and pulling out the cork

    Just pure CLASS

  • hook nose JEW sucks, Nirvana!!!

  • great bass

  • tremendous...

  • who else remembers 1982 an being a jam fan

  • @MrPhilroo123

me , in Italy one of the two or three at that time :-)

  • I need some money and a take away curry

    go the Jam.

  • theres no one better-------legend

  • 23 years ago....pure fuckin' genius!!

  • @calligh

good music is still out there. you just have to look for it. and thankfully, the internet is around to help us.

  • To the 22 people who disliked this ..... you need to get out more

  • One of the last bands to have a unique and unmistakable style of their own. Luv em.

  • Class music that will never change or lose its bite .... what is worrying is that the story is the same now ..... gangs everywhere

  • Those were the days - when 3 working class lads could strap on a guitar and bang out songs about real lives and real problems as it affected them. What a shame todays youth are left with music without passion sung by mindless musicians who wouldn't understand soul if it hit them over the head.

  • @calligh -

dead right mate, I'd say 90% of the acts in the charts today wouldn't know where to start when writing a song, hence they sound shit and totally unbelievable (not the good unblieveable).

Their songs, to me anyway, are wholely unrelatable. The song doesn't mean anything to the very person who is singing it, which comes across when they sing it. It's the record companies I blame, promoting shit songs that for some reason people actually like.

    Rant over!!

  • @bigdo87 I had the same discussion with a mate at work. listens too american rap and nothing else. now each to their own, not my cuppa tea, but i asked how he can relate too music about a life he knows nothing about. with their hoes and stuff. Where as me, ive been turned over twice at notting hill and once at ladbroke grove. growing up in london in the 80s, its the norm. i had a little money, but no takeaway curry though.

  • @calligh minime shoe got more soul than todays yoof.

  • This is the best version I've heard of Tube Station. The build up is brilliant and the band are genius.

  • Classic track. Lyrics about mindless violence committed by the morons around in the late 70's, regardless of race.

  • I love this song. This guy turned me on to The Jam a few months ago...love them. But this song I'm in love with. Bass is awesome.

  • Fantastic song and Happy memory's , but boy we were really that angry back then ? ...

Nearly made me kick off my slippers, turn off Countryfile and go grab my two tones from the loft ...

  • this is a great song

  • Man what a bass player Awesome!!!

  • Though I might be mistaken, I think I first heard this at the 100 Club. I was pretty unsettled, waiting on the platform at Tottenham court Road Station, after the gig, and have never been comfortable at that station ever since.

  • this is 1 of my favs from the Jam. the good ol days were the best,

  • are you first class racist bastard you bigoted prick fuck off and grow some balls

  • @londoncalling45 well fucking said

    stupid nazi cunt

  • They don't write songs like this anymore....I pity the teens of the 2000's, they don't have what we had as kids.

  • @KilmarnockLady come on us teens of the 2000s had the mighty oasis

  • Oh man this is awesome shit, greatest band ever

  • It's actually "right wing meetings" not beatings! and mindless violence, regardless of race!

  • Comment removed

  • Arguably their best song

  • love this

  • Genius music and lyrics. One of the best.

  • Yeah, you should check out the toilets at Cathederal station, they had the toilet in a mess especially for my arrival it was all very distressing, ..bunch of animals... axelle_rose

  • best song ever

  • I have bought product name, you can read my review here - clickbankreviewdude(dot)com/your-diabetes-cure-review

  • It doesn't get much better than this.

  • they smelt of pubs and wormwood scrubs........fucking classic!!!!

  • @skinnyrichard what a dumb ass dick head comment

  • @redredreds100 are you some kind or CUNT......you absolute fuckwit............you're nuthin' but a twat,i'm more than fed up up wit little boys like you making absolutely spineless comments that you cannot back up!!!...........you fucking bedwetting little cunt!!!!!

  • @skinnyrichard temper, temper, for an insignificant litte piece of nothing, you sure got a big mouth, meet me at lime street, Liverpool one day, I'll show you spineless, you fucking faggot loser

  • has any one out there got some footage of the jam playing greenfield playing fiields 1979 in saddleworth, oldham? please

  • I prefer this song live over the single version, lyrics are superb, fast and raw.

  • I remember that stupid bitch Sue Lawley on an edition of 'Nationwide', when they had a band of the year contest. Punk was still considered anti-establishment, so Lawley dutifully read crap from the dummy board when mentioning the sole new wave band 'The Jam', introducing a clip of this song. Something along the lines of their music being of a violent nature, despite the fact that this is a song about the fear of violence on the streets.

That said, Paul Weller is a bit of a left wing twat.

  • @Maxshard i think he turned into a bit of a wanker now but you can't deny this song . and what a rendition

  • @Maxshard Fuck you.

  • @Maxshard

This song is actually about racism, if you really read into the lyrics.

  • @ibazookajoe It mentions 'right wing meetings' but I'd say it was about street violence in general. If Paul Weller was ttempting to portray racism as something that white people mostly did, maybe he would havebeen right back then. Now he would be out of order, with anti-white violence possibly constituting the majority of racial thuggery.

That said, anyone who goes out looking for fight will always find an excuse and race is as good an excuse as any. The media unfortunately hate whites.

  • @Maxshard u r sadly misguided... the "media" is almost exclusively owned by "whites"

  • @tSKiLove1 What does the colour of the skin of the communist hypocrites who control the media have to do with it? Just because they are mostly white doesn't mean a thing. The BBC was described by its white Director General as 'hideously white'. It's a white hating phrase that has been used countless times by self flagellating anti-white white racists within the media.

There's a hate campaign against men too and the media is controlled by men but these cowards still bully men. Media scum!

  • @Maxshard Paul Weller was a socialist part of red wedge of course it's about a racist attack

  • @londoncalling45 To be fair the Socialists, Lefties and Feminists deserve a good kicking in a train station.

So I have no sympathy. Throw the cunts on the track for all I care.

  • @ibazookajoe Hmm... kind of. He mentions what are obviously skinheads, and mentions "right wing beatings", but there's no indication he's being picked on for his skin colour. It's just a bunch of thugs threatening a man, just because he's there.

  • great lyrics, great performance

  • great tune

  • awsome!

  • this is aaaaaaaaaaaaaamazing; omfg i love the jam; and there not even here while im growing up, but my dad was their number one fan and i knew the lyrics by the time i was 5 :D <3

  • I love it, makes me wish I lived during this era

  • @droptopsixfo i was there........ fab!!!!

  • fukin brilliant can't say owt else.

  • Thanks I loved the footage. I also saw the Jam live in 1978 with the Vapors. Great gig. I like DITTSAM a real classic, I will be corrected by others I am sure but one of the first songs I heard with a drum solo

  • Comment removed

  • is this another example of crying mods ,complaining ,about getting the shit kicked out of them by , .skinheads?

  • @youacccunt No,now go and listen to it properly, you ignoramus.

Skinheads never had it all their own way, should know,i was there, but hey as there were no good skinhead bands about,i guess thats why you tagged along with us,dont blame you really,no one could touch the Jam.

  • @currypot1965 were does it say i was a skinhead dopey, and i know excatly what the theme of the songs is about!

  • @youacccunt If you know what the song is about, then why bang on about it being about something else?

When i mention about skinheads and the scene back then,i am not naming you as a skinhead just letting you know how it was.

  • @currypot1965 y are the pair ofd u going on bout skinheads the jam was mods

  • @MrVinalmagic I know m8,he originally said that the song was about mods complaining about being beaten up by skinheads. So was just putting him right and reminding him that skinheads never had it all their own way back in the day,i was a mod so know what was going on,sure i got my fair enough of beats from skinheads but also dished some out.

  • As much as i love the jam (seen em in concert twice in the 70s) I am gobsmacked people today call paul weller the "modfather". If you want to see the real modfather in action may i suggest you search for the small faces perform tin soldier. Steve marriott was the man...

  • saw the modfather last year. totally awesome.

  • weller at top form great song cool as shit lean angry and passion in spades!

  • just fucking awesome

  • @currypot1965 love it mate

  • toffe wrappers!! what a savage song

  • The bassist has a nice mullet. I've always admired it.

  • Paul Weller was/still is a genius.

  • quality tune

  • the best jam song

  • does anyone have a tab to this song?

  • they don't write songs like this anymore worst luck

  • @mtaylor848 ..that because Tony Blackburn was a thick arsehole

  • @mtaylor848 ..that because Tony Blackburn was a thick arsehole

  • @mtaylor848 ..that because Tony Blackburn was a thick arsehole

  • @mtaylor848 ..that because Tony Blackburn was a thick arsehole

  • King of the Mods.

  • The song title is actually Down In The Tube Station at Midnight.

  • do they need to get back together ..the lad who does the vocals with Foxton and buckler is spot on ...could weller still belt out the more upbeat songs they had?? Maybe not

  • I once went down on the tube station at midnight,i got mugged.

  • The Guy is a genius and the lyrics are so true of the time!

  • I seen Paul Weller and his band 2 years ago and they were great. I have to say out of experience, Paul Weller would be better not getting back with The Jam because he is so good solo.

  • weller!! stop all your he said this and bruce did that ,ohh... and rick said that......you must get the band together, or do you want to do a clash... and say only if.

  • That would be such an amazing come back. I was waaay into them back then but never saw them.

  • I would rather the Jam didn't get back together as sad, middle-aged men. Let's remember their songs as they were, rather than trying to relive days that are gone forever.

  • @NeverMindTheBLX well deep purple have got back together and they're what? 60 odd? i'd like the jam to get back together

  • Fair comment Lukaduke, and I must admit to having liked Deep Purple myself. I wonder though if the difference is that the Jam were not just good music; their songs were also a comment on the times and social environment in which they were written. The context of late 70s/early 80s Britain planted into 2010 wouldn't seem right. At least thats how I feel, and maybe the Jam members (especially Weller) do as well.

  • One of the best bands ever. Nothing more need be said.

  • saw them once sadly, but made my night when they sang this last song of the gig, and last gig as the jam suuuupppperrrbbbb!!!!

  • I fumble for change - and pull out the Queen

    Smiling, beguiling

I put in the money and pull out a plum

    Behind me

    magical, truly, magical!!!

  • One of the most poignant songs ever. This changed my life. Weller should realise what the fans want and do the Jam again.

  • @Glesgabred

    damn right

  • I,m from Glasgow to,30 years later and I still love The Jam.

  • one of the most charismatic front ever..soooo cooool... with the richenbacker as well... legend.

  • who ever has this i want it, this weller and the jam at his nngry best, love it

  • Those were the days...

  • Pure dead brilliant

  • saw the jam over 50 times, and this song still brings a tear to my eyes fuck me what memories,i want this song played at my funeral,if ever a complete story was told in a 3 minute song then this is it

  • The Jam are and were the kings of the late 70's 80's. Just pure brilliance from Weller..

  • The Jam live were brill ;-)

  • Loved this, The Jam live are brill.

  • Raw music at it`s best ! fantastic bass !

  • rock against racsim ballsed it

  • christ how true these lyrics were to late 70s London.

  • any idea where and when this video footage was taken?

  • WDR is a german channel and I guess it's a german concert somewhere in the 80's

  • My Life Swam around Me,

It took a Look and drowned Me!

  • If you like The Jam try... SUMMERTIME by A BAND CALLED BERT

  • Yeah - understandable angst from suburban lads not wanting to trust the metropolitan transport system, given the public spending cuts in the '70s. Actually, you wouldn't wanna go anywhere near the Western world while they're bombing the fuck out of Helmand et al...

  • All mod cons was the first Album I bought and It was a Door into a Magical world full of Strippers and Long Legged Girls!

This Track will always give me GooseBumps Until the Day I Don't Go any more!

    The Jam what a band!

    Edgy Energetic and Raw!

  • listen to what paul weller wrote at the age of 15 soul dance what a song

  • classic stuff,

    go chaps

  • can you believe he was writing this stuff so young? amazing then went on to "You Do Something To Me" and "Shout To The Top" dead gorgeous still.

  • I just adore this song, brilliant tune and fantastic lyrics. I sometimes play it on loop like 20 or 30 times in a row and cannot get enough of it. Ahhhhh :-)

  • Great track, always think about it when I'm alone, drunk and down in a tube station after midnight ot close to. A classic track!

  • @AliveMama79 My fav too.......simply quality !!

  • Just one superb tune by one superb band

  • Comment removed

  • THE KINKS WERE VERY GOOD

  • still the best no band has got close to them

  • I totally agree...but in our days i think Arctic Monkeys are really good...anyway Weller will always be the best around...

  • arctic monkeys... great band, but the jam, the jam is the best fuckin band around the world, no doubt

  • So good ...

    Even froggies love it ...

    after all this years

    UNtouchables...

  • This is where it's at -The Jam are fucking untouchable. Head and shoulders above his contemporaries even at this time, Weller has gone on to outdo them all. Apart from the obvious L/McC, which other British artist is comparable?

  • Sorry to bust in on you kids who are debating UK vs USA but here's the deal (Weller would love help us out here and dissect this stuff if he could stand the Internet). The oppressed from England came to the "new world" aka USA and oppressed others here. Something incongruent in that philosophy of life. The USA is still in its infancy; hopefully we'll one day get our act together. Meanwhile, Weller rocks!!! Jam rules!!!

  • no worries

  • its after the jam but i think it might be killamangiro by babyshambles

  • yeah must be

  • This is such a sad song.

  • Phenomenal. it's songs like this that make Weller the greatest living British musician.

    Oh, you spelt "in" wrong.

  • Awesomley awesome. I was dead lucky to see the Jam a few times, and they were outstanding. Only Prince (in my humble view) was equal to these guys live.

  • errm sorry I dont get it

  • I thought it was quite funny

  • There is still excitement about this music!!

So play more Jam songs Weller!!

    Long live Modfather

  • Secret Affair pIay their 30th anniversary show @ The Camden Centre, Iondon, Kings X, May 30th

  • We are the mods!!

  • Comment removed

  • english make better music than fucking americans, enough is enough.

  • Too right, the ammount of arguments i've had with yanks

  • Absolutely agree....MUSIC is ''made in England'' in 99% of cases...the other things are just rubbish...

    P.S.

    I'm Italian :-)

(..and in Italy we have no music at all...............just fucking rubbish)

  • Secret Affair piay their onIy Iondon show @ The Camden Centre, Kings X, May 30

    tickets @ see tickets

  • great tune...

seems to me it's not a nationalist issue - more of a class issue - make the bankers pay

  • Really? During a Jam song? you're gonna attack each other's country? all of you guys from both the uk and usa writing this shit: fucking losers.

  • when mad was mad, if you dont like it FUCK YOU

  • Just enjoy the music, and if yuo want to argue, fuck off to some pointless internet agruement forum ffs..

    Tha Jam = Legends!!

  • get a life you are either English or American.Peeps who say to me I am Irish -American make me laugh.you want the ties but you don't bloody live here and don't support the country.

  • i am an anglo american - who hates me?

  • Jam are legendary. Fantastic to hear this again.

BTW, what is all this England hates America, English are envious etc bollocks? Go onto a political thread, plenty of them on youtube if you want to argue international politics.

  • my country is better than your country!

my country is older than your country!

nobody likes you! everyone hates you! we invented music! you stole our music!

jesus christ, shut the fuck up!

  • Legendary stuff. They sound even better in concert than they do did on vinyl

  • i love that song!

  • legends

  • My favorite jam song
