This song reminds me more than any other of what is was like to be teenager in London during the late 70's. You would go to see a band at the Red Cow pub then go back to Hammersmith Broadway Tube station to meet all the teds coming out of the H'smith Palais. We would then have a massive ruck (fight for the N Americans) and kick crap out of each other,...I'm now over 50, and should know better, but this was a really special time to be a teen in London and for music generally.

I remember that stupid bitch Sue Lawley on an edition of 'Nationwide', when they had a band of the year contest. Punk was still considered anti-establishment, so Lawley dutifully read crap from the dummy board when mentioning the sole new wave band 'The Jam', introducing a clip of this song. Something along the lines of their music being of a violent nature, despite the fact that this is a song about the fear of violence on the streets.

That said, Paul Weller is a bit of a left wing twat.

I wonder though if the difference is that the Jam were not just good music; their songs were also a comment on the times and social environment in which they were written.
