Damn, I remember my mom doing that "stop crying" thing to me. The weirdest part was that she wasn't even hitting me before but she slapped me when I didn't stop crying. Like THAT's going to help... (And no the slap didn't even really hurt, it was the fact that she hit me that hurt and that made me cry more.) She hated crying... Usually if she was combing my hair and I cried because she did it pretty roughly and it hurt, she'd get angry and start combing REALLY roughly so that it hurt even more.
(cont.) Basically, I learned not to cry in front of her, no matter how upset I was... Except that didn't work either because I'd go all stiff and quiet and blank-faced and she'd notice and get angry at that too. So I had to learn how to fake being relaxed and good-humoured even when she yelled at me. That finally worked... So now it's my go-to tactic in confrontations. It's a good one, though... people hate it when you cry in arguments, it makes them feel like you're guilt-tripping them.
Cenk, be careful with that... Some kids are fine, I suppose if he's anything like you, he might be fine... but for some kids, if their parents expect perfection, the kid might feel like he's never going to be good enough for daddy. And that goes on for the rest of his life too.

@Pauly69s I know it's complete hypocrisy, and as someone who's taken a fascination in the history of human torture I've read all about water torture, Cenk should look this up himself, the use of freezing water in torture goes back quite a ways, it's particularly effective for psychologically breaking the victim, people subjected to it tend to have post traumatic stress beyond normal beating, the lasting effects compare to electrocution torture, without the risks to the victim and the torturer.

For whatever reason, I see the cold shower as the worse punishment. There are absolutely health risks involoved with a cold shower if it goes on for a significant period of time, especially for a child. The hot sauce doesn't bother me all that much.

Cenk's main objection to criminalising psychological abuse of the child seems to be one of clarity ("What is psychological terror?"). But the law has recognised psychologial harm for decades now; the courts have developed tools to answer questions like these. All we need to do is be willing to apply them to parent-child relationships.
As an aside, is anyone else confused by the obsession with welts? Which would you prefer: Welts (with no psychological effect), or a mental illness?

@millitantatheist1 I still don't think you're getting what I'm saying. On my first point, let me simplify: Psychological harm is more damaging to a child than physical harm in most cases. The reason why we abhor physical harm is because it has a psychological effect.
re second point: Please re-read your first comment before accusing me of being dramatic.
I don't see what parents' agreement has to do with it: I'm saying that the law could easily be extended to cover this kind of abuse.

@Pauly69s I know it's complete hypocrisy, and as someone who's taken a fascination in the history of human torture I've read all about water torture, Cenk should look this up himself, the use of freezing water in torture goes back quite a ways, it's particularly effective for psychologically breaking the victim, people subjected to it tend to have post traumatic stress beyond normal beating, the lasting effects compare to electrocution torture, without the risks to the victim and the torturer.

Assuming that Cenk obviously didnt know that the cold shower thing was actually a torture technique, he probably was questioning the fact if the laws can interpret this as being child abuse because there is no physical damage done to the child.Also they werent laughing at the kid in the end, they were talking about what parents should do instead of child abuse.

Cenk Spraying people with freezing water is an actual water torture technique, the first application of the freezing water doesn't have any profound effect, but by repeated application it can induce a psychological effect far beyond what people normally experience from being beaten. Just to be clear, you are defending the use of torture technique that returns results similar to electric shock torture, and you are defending it's use on a foster child, as a right.

There is an easy solution, you take the kid away from her and don't allow her to adopt without demonstrating she can properly care for a child. Using my tax money to send her to jail is a waste, because she will probably come out worse than before. Instead, you punish her by taking away her privilege to have another child.
