God she was gorgeous!!! I really like her in this. She's so much better when she drops her patrician facade and looks like she's having some fun. Like her much better live.
In the Spring of 1961 Judy Collins was headliner at a Club on the Near North Side of Chicago called "Mother Blues". I went to seen her there and the place was crowded. When she finished her set everyone began talking. I wondered what the two guys were doing who came out on the stage during her break....couldn't make out what they were singing with all that noise. Later learned that it was Tommy & Dick Smothers!
I wish they would put the dates on these, when they were recorded. When I was about 15 years old, I visited my Grandparents in Florida. They had a Judy Collins album, someone had given them. Well, that started me as a Judy Collins fan for life! Who would have thought my "UNCOOL" Grandparents record could kick off such a decades long love and appreciation of Judy Collins. At 50 now, I got a CD online, and can't remember why I drifted away from her years ago. I guess that is just a part of youth!
how wonderful to see this. i was just a kid then, but i've been a huge fan of judy collins for years and love to see clips of her. she looks gorgeous, sounds beautiful and her eyes and hair are seriously hot. seeing the sb's as well is great. they were much more political and sophisticated than they are remembered for. thank you so much for this beautiful gift. and, most important, thank you to judy and the SB's.
Quite a gem. There's real chemistry between Tom and Miss Collins.
This clip is another reason for a 'Smothers Brother Comedy Hour' DVD set to be released. .
Really, if 'Rowan & Martin's Laugh-in' can be viewed at home anytime, there's no reason why Tom and Dick's seminal variety show can't also be accessible.
I would also love to see the SB show on DVD -- preferably the version shown on "E!" in the early 90s, where Tom and Dick commented looking back on the show, and they showed things that had been censored from the original run.
I suspect the reason this hasn't happened is the cost of licensing all the copyrighted music performed in the SB show for home video (which is much more expensive than just airing music on TV). But, I'm still hoping!
I've never been so happy to be wrong. The Smothers Brothers are finally releasing a 5-DVD set of their Comedy Hour! They're starting with Season 3, the final, and most controversial season. The set will have lots of extras and commentary. They are taking pre-orders for it now, on the Smothers Brothers official website, with an expected ship date of August 5. I've already ordered my set!
I still remember the shock in reading The Seattle Times in April,1969 proclaiming "CBS Resolves Smothers Brothers Censorship Woes. They're Fired!" Now we can relive that turbulent era when America seemed to be having a psychotic breakdown. I recall the TV Guide article in Sept.1968, seeing how Tom and Dick's appearance had changed radically for their third season to reflect the counter culture. Thanks for the heads-up!
Along with Bird on the Wire and Pretty Polly it's her rocker showcase number which she should do alot more of and skip some of the wimpy, screechy stuff she seems so fond of performing. I agree with the generous poster that the album version is better but a switch arrangemnt is nice. Her concert versions are best of all though.
I want to thank you for posting this great song. In my own personal history, this is an important song, mainly because I heard it once on FM radio in the 1960s (the Mimi & Richard Farina version. I immediately loved it, but, FM being what it was at the time, I had no idea who performed it or what it was called. It being a somewhat obscure song, it took me over 20 years to find out what the song was and who it was by.
Glad I could help. Judy recorded a vastly superior version on her "In My Life" album. I didn't know that the Farinas recorded it too. I'll have to try to track that down.
From "In my life". In fact it looks more like the "Live in Newport" version. I love this song- but Michael Sahl, electronic composer and my pianist in 1968-9, loves it even more. Words & Music by Richard Farina.
Really could have used a little more rehearsal.
I digged the riff they used on the guitar, though.

Why can't people sing with this much talent in today's music? I blame auto-tune. :(

One thing that people lose sight of is the fact that the Smothers were fine musicians and singers!! This is neat!!
