A tremendous gamble when you think about it and that is why it worked. Kirk had the ship full of super high ranking ambassadors and he dropped his shields and counted on the other captain wanting to savor the victory instead of going for the quick kill.
@elrond70 True statement. However, with that being said, my comment was meant to mean against another humanoid species (Klingons, Romulans, Kzinti, Orion, Slavers, etc.). The Planet Killer was a robotic device, like the M-5 multitronic unit, sort of... LOL

I will never understand the battle strategy. Even if the enemy is faster you sit there like a target in a shooting gallery. You go after them. I don't know what this "Baiting them in business is either. If their only intent was to destroy the Enterprise, why would they not just continue what they were doing?
@Artifactsofmars, I believe the idea was this: the Orion ship was outmaneuvering the Enterprise, flying so fast that they could not successfully counterattack. By presenting the Orions with a target nearly motionless relative to them and faking power loss, Kirk evidently hoped to lure the bad guys into a straight attack run—a "finish them" assault instead of a dogfight. As the Orions were working on a tight schedule, they took the bait, ran straight at Enterprise, and ate some phasers.
So was I. You're Kodos, you murdering bastard. All I know is that four thousand colonists were needlessly blown out of existence without mercy. And you're a lousy actor too. My parakeet could play Macbeth better than you.
She's human. Down to the last blood cell, she's human. Down to the last thought, hope, aspiration, emotion, she's human! When the human spirit is free, you have no power of ownership. She's free to do as she wishes.
Kirk is seriously dissing that crewman who keeps switching stations with Chekhov. Is that other guy a piece of crap who can't scan, navigate, or work a library computer? Or is his phony accent even phonier than Chekhov's?
Right! He's probably got the same freakin' accent that he had on the show. Ridiculous! What I want is for someone to meet that poor stiff who keeps changing places with Chekhov, give him a part in a TV show and feed him a line or two.
Yeah. What I'd give to hear Kirk say (preferably during a Klingon attack), "Mr. Chekhov, there's a backed-up toilet on deck 2. Here's a mop and pail. Take care of it, please."
I've never understood why the Orion Pirates would be so willing to commit suicide rather than surrender. I'd think pirates would be looking out for #1.
000266617--But that's my point: They're supposed to be PIRATES, motivated by profit, not terrorists, motivated by a cause, however wrong that cause may be. Pirates can't make a profit if they're dead.
Does it seem a little strange that Spock's mother is in the operating room at 1:50? Another strange aspect of this episode occurs in the beginning. Not even Kirk knew that the legendary ambassador Sarek was Spock's father. Seems like he should have known that.
Hmm doesn't seem to be letting me post links, I guess its against the rules but if you google memory alpha and journey to babel, you will see the synopsis comment how chekov is shooting from the side, Also note he did the same thing on the wrath of khan when he recovered from sickbay he took an aft station and starting shooting photon torpedos
The bridge consoles are programmable. Functions of one console can be re-routed to others. Useful is a console is damaged or the ship has to function with a skeleton crew. You'll notice Uhura runs elements of the communications console from the navigator's station in "Balance of Terror", and the ship's weapons seem to be accessible from both the helm and navigator's console (depending on whether Walter or George was working that week). So, yeah, basically its all made up.
Little known is that in the original script, after the Andorean on the bridge says "You're baiting him!," Kirk replies "Yes. I am a master bater." Har har.
My favorite episode of TOS. I will agree that the new effects, while not bad, actually distract from the episode, like you are wathing two different shows at the same time.
Also, the original PK was more threatening, due to it now being shown closeup too much and having a more realistic beam. Like someone else mentioned, the original had a Jaws like quality.
Still cool to see new effects and how the end result came out. But the originals are still not bad and were ahead of their time.

um... what was the point of that remastering. It's a great episode, but all they did was replace the space effects with cgi effects. It doesn't seem like it's really worth it.... especially since the ships moving faster than light are still visible to the naked eye. At least fix problems like that if you're gonna mess with a classic.
It's called a plot. and no one cares how ships look moving at superluminal speed.
And FYI, they did so it could be released on Hi definition (you could see strings on the oringinal at Hi def, something you probably would care about)
Ah. That is an awesome point. However, it's much easier to go into a computer and paint a string black so you can't see it than it is to totally rebuild the entire scene.
And I agree that no one cares about how the ships should look, I would be the first to say that. But if you're going to "fix" the crappy effects, at least "fix" the weird little things like that too.
Yes, one of my fav episodes too. Good they have remastered it with sensibility and didn't do too much fancy stuff. only what is neccessary. this episode was so full packed, with Spocks parents, finally a few more non-human looking aliens, a spy, a secret pursuer, medical problems and a bunch of ambassadors - they easily could have made a double episode out of this one.
