  • Thank you so much for this video. You saved us an amazing amount of $! My husband, who never works on the car was confident after viewing this that he could fix it himself. We didn't have time to order a part on line but picked up a part at Napa. Highway robbery for what it cost, but at least we didn't have to pay for labor or for the whole shift cable!!!! Bless You!!!

  • Great video, fixed my problem 100%. Everything was just as described. Along with the suggested video on removing the console, it was really really easy. Thanks for taking the time to create this video.

  • what about the cable how you fix that

  • thanks so muchfor the video, this happened two days ago and this helped me so much, i just ordered the part from the guy on ebay.thanks again, really helpful

  • Very helpful. Thumbs up.

  • Thank you! This was very helpful! I ordered that same part and will be getting it in a few days. Thank GOD for YOUTUBE!

  • thanks for posting where you got the part!! Ive been looking everywhere and they all want to sell me the whole cable assembly.

  • My shifter fell apart just as I was in the middle of parallel parking. This bushing fixed the problem like a charm and I haven't had any problems since.

  • Thanks, my 94 SL1 is tough to shift into only first gear, could this be the same problem you were having?

  • Great video! The same thing happened to my 1998 Saturn SL2 @ roughly 110k miles. The technical name of the part needed is OE Solutions Manual Transmission Shift Cable Bushing (part #14043) available at Napa Auto Parts for $22.19. It looks like an easy fix. DO NOT BUY THE SHIFT CABLE ASSEMBLY FROM SATURN!!!!! They'll charge you $215.49 for a set of 2 cables. If your cables are fine, this bushing is all you need! I'm fixing mine tomorrow and will be on the road. Stay off the sidewalk!!!!

  • @whiteboybeats1 Thank you so much! My local NAPA didn't find it when I gave them that part # but they were able to look it up. $19, yessir!

  • My car has been parked for 3 months because of the shift going out -- and fear that it was the tranny, so you don't know how glad I was to find your video! Even if none of this works, it's less than the cost of a tow, so I am extremely grateful -- and can hardly wait to order parts and try it.

  • great vid. What was your original car problems/symptoms. thanks.

  • @wildernesswandering2 The original problem is that I couldn't shift! I backed out of the driveway, then couldn't shift into first. The shift lever was completely loose.

  • @alanlarue Thanks...Looks like here the linkage is all over the place. my problem is 1st gear only, just won't shift in. Fluid fine. But doesn't go in while not running either. its not a clutch problem. Thinking might be contaminated fluid (air or water) or greasing the cables going into the tranny. The transmission shop said a $2000 job for mine. I have been reading on the syncros. I might look into that after the quick fix. I don't think I should spend that much on a $1500 car. thanks again

  • @alanlarue Just happen to me last night...

  • @alanlarue Wow the same thing happened to me last week! Thankyou so much for you video and the info for the part on ebay! I just put in my order with saturnbushingman!

  • THANK YOU!!! I actually had already ordered the same part from that guy on ebay. I'm a chick and this was easy!!! The only thing I needed was a g-clamp I got from the 99 cent store!!! Had to ride my bike 30 min in the rain to get it but got it...clamped the piece on and wallaaaah!!! This video was super helpful! Beats the $300 my mechanic was gonna charge me. Thank you! :-) The console was super easy to put back on too. The whole thing together took me like 15 min....besides the bike ride...lol.

  • GREAT VIDEO!!!

Where did you order the part?

    What's it called?

  • @bullfrogtooth I ordered the part on eBay from a user called saturnbushingman (Saturn Bushing Man), and the part is called "Improved Saturn Stick Shift Shifter Cable Bushing ".

  • Thanks for taking the time to post this video... the shifter bushing is no longer available from auto parts stores...ace hardware had the list of parts that you used as well as the 1/4" carbo steel tap,the companion #3 drill bit and high strength threadlock "red". I had a problem when I was using the tap the ball fell off... so i drilled thru the shifter and got a 1" hex screw and lock nut for the other side... this worked great.. very solid... the ball is now totally secured...cost $24.25

  • Thank you so much for this video... My stepson arrived this morning with this problem.... auto supply stores and they did not have this part... they told me to call a junk yard!!!... he needs to leave tomorrow so we didn't have time to try to order this part so we saw another utube video that tells you how to drill a hole in the shifter ball and use a hex screw and washers to hold it in place... see the other saturn gearshift linkage repair to learn how

  • Thank you very much Alan. The video was exactly what I need to fix my 2002 Saturn SL with 112000 miles.

  • have you had the problem with your car like not wanting to go into gear, or its really hard to get it into gear? ive had that with my saturn, so i tried greasing the transmission link cables(i guess theyre called cables) and that seemed to work very well.

  • @speacialperson12345 Did it shift easily in the OFF position? not running. And did it only happen in one gear, like first, when your were having problems?

  • @wildernesswandering2 yea when it wasnt running it was going into gear no problem, and it did it in 1st through 3rd, so what i did was greased the shifter cables to the transmission and changed the tranny fluid and havent had any problem since, well i hvnt been driving it my dad has, but its fine now.

  • @wildernesswandering2 hey, thanks for the quick reply. I will try that first, before I go messing inside the transmission. The richpin vids are helpful getting started. I know everytime I take it to a shop mechanic, it is always a $500 fix. no matter what. When you pull into their bay they need to charge that to stay n business. I think they cater to the wealthy, with the newer computerized cars, and probably just out of warranty. thanks gain.

  • Seriously just fixed my car.... After looking at richpins videos I'm gonna fix my whole car! Thanks for postig this video toassure me that this was a easy fix..if you are ever driving your car and you shift then "snap" your stick shift 99 times out of 100 this is the problem and it only cost me $23 as oppose to hundreds at a shop an I am not even close to a mechanic.

  • How do you remove the plastic (middle console) to expose this

  • It's just Phillips head screws, very easy. The hardest part is slipping it out from under the front part of the console. Someone else has a really good video on it. Search "Saturn console removal" and it's the first video to come up, by richpin06a. The title is just "Automobile Console Removal".

  • @TELLLIEVISION theres like a black cover type thing in the back of the console, and remove those two door type things up front and then disconnect the lighter and remove the console, itd be easier to show u rather than trying to explain in a comment.

  • Thanks a ton for putting this up! I just ordered my replacement and seeing it hooked up helps.
