I grew up listening to Al Stewart and after 30 years finally got to hear him as gift from my brother for my birthday. That night hoping to see him we waited a hour but didn't so we stopped at the bar next door when who is sitting at a table filled with fans. I got Famous last words signed by Al and later he taps me on the shoulder and says you know I wrote this song. Great guy. He told this story that night so it was good to find it again.
I love this man, one of the greatest poets/wordsmith/historian/songwriter of our time... and you're right re1959, i don't think he ever got the recognition he deserved.
@reh1959 Good point. Could be because he doesn't write songs that repeat themselves deliously, or use distorted sounds of thrashing metal or rap beats... It's a mystery, but he is one of the greatest songwriters ever.
I seen this guy about 15 times during the 70's and 80's at the Tower theater in Upper Darby,PA..all were awesome shows.great shows with all the instruments..great memories
he is telling how he gotto meet John lennon after seeing a show of the Beatles as a 17 year old. When John asked what he thought of the show Al said, that he only had heard George since he was infront of his gettoblaster, so Lennon said Damn George, and walked off. The Next time they gave a solo John gave a solo so everyone could hear him!
Al steward just grew older, but his voice is still as magical as ever!
Al's voice still sounds the same. I can't understand fully what he was saying because of my small computer speakers but it must be funny because he laughs at his own jokes. :)

Why didn't he do this gig with his backing band. This doesn't sound anything like the version on Year Of The Cat or other live versions. The electric piano is one of the beautiful elements of this song. These acoustic live gigs are fuckin cheep. CHEEP!
oh my. get over it man. If you want to hear the version from the album, just buy the album and play it. the beauty of live music is new arrangements, improvisation and new life... !

Saw Al in Key West at Guy Harvey's. The show was fantastic. What a performer. Also got to chat with him a few days later at the airport. What a great person. Thanks Al for all the great tunes.
this is the one of the added bonuses of an Al Stewart performance: great stories along with great music. I was fourtunate enough to be at this performance. Even if you are not a big fan of his music, go for his stories. He always brings talented people to play with him. Doug was awesome. He was brought in at the last minute, as Al said, and was great.
people don't really know who al stewart is, they know all about paul simon and john lennon and everybody else but people forget that he knew all these people!
That's a funny story!

(useless words I know - Al's performance would actualize in the worst circumstances)

Beauty! Yup, Al is underrated. There are few writers who can tell a story the way he can. (Come to Kansas City soon, will ya, Al?!)

Absolutely beautiful! The power of acoustic guitars can never be underestimated.
One of his best songs too.
The only thing that lets it down is Al's pre song ramblings which is very tiresome!!!!

It's the accent of the upper, privately-educated class, wherever they're from. I don't know whether it's put on or genuine.

He's from Glasgow, Scotland

Although he was born in Glasgow he spent most of his childhood / teenage days in Bournemouth Dorset it is not a put on accent
