  • We should probably stop considering Daniel Day-Lewis to be in the profession of "acting." Much more accurately, in my opinion, is that he for many years now has been in the profession of "being." It's not DDL as - It's DDL is. Quite the inspiration.

  • He should play John Lennon

  • I've seen There Will Be Blood literaly 50 times. I can't get over how fucking great he is in it. Same with Gangs of New York. He blows everyone one away. He's The Beatles of acting. He's Michael Jordan of acting. Whatever term you want to use that says he's the very best. He is...

  • The way he can change the tone of his voice is most impressive.

  • My god, he talks to slow.. you can tell he lives in a forest.

  • How the hell do you even compare DDL to Depp? Dont get me wrong depp has had some outstanding roles but DDL is the best living actor, Depp is more of a cookie-cutter type actor with generic roles there's no way he could have pulled off Bill the Butcher or Daniel Plainview the only thing that sucks about DDL is he only does a few films it seems Depp has a better eye for roles that suit him either that or DDL just enjoys working every now and then...he needs to play a villain again

  • This, 104,889 views. A video that is suggested on the right entitled 'steve gets a boner on Xfactor' 5,196,926 Says a lot about people on Youtube the vast majority... beyond stupid.

  • He sure is a lanky fellow, huh?

  • Best actor of all.all..all...time.time..time...

  • @bspar2248 Nice joke. 50 cent takes it seriously though. I think he method acted, lost a bunch of weight to play a cancer patient? I don't think he has the natural talent of course though.

  • @RevolutionFist

no..despite that people like to tag him as a method actor

  • what a beautiful animal.

  • Comment removed

  • @RevolutionFist not a clue mate sorry.

  • @RevolutionFist yes he is, i herd in gangs of new York, he stayed in character between takes and took butcher lessons. even when he had pneumonia he refused to wear a warmer coat or seek treatment as it was not in keeping with the period of the film. this man is a true actor.

  • @RevolutionFist what is a method actor?

  • There's a ocean of oil under my feet

  • compare his characters to what hes really like

  • So weird hearing his actual accent.

  • As an aspiring actress this interview with Daniel Day Lewis is very inspirational. Thank you for this interview.

  • He's sounds like he has a bit of a scouse twang, sort of George Harrisonish.

I know he's from London and lives in Ireland but definite hint of a 'posh' Liverpool accent here.

  • He looks like the kind of person you could sit in a quiet pub with, have a few pints of Guinness, and just have a nice civilised conversation with him.

  • "The Age of Innocence" is amazing.

  • i'm really knew to Mr. Lewis, only seen Blood and Gangs...I had NO idea what this man's actual voice sounded like and i thought he was actually gruff...WOW...i can see now how damn good an actor he is

  • @bfan82 yea i encourage you to watch some of his earlier ork, he guy is great..."The last of the Mohicans" "In the Name of The fater"

  • daniel, i want you to know, i would give half of my life to make love to you.

  • @vicipagup I'll be you're a dude! LOL

  • hmmmm....two different styles of actors...both great. As an artist DDL is probably better, but Johnny Depp is, in his own right, brilliant.

  • wtf everytime i picture i think of bill cutting and a harcore american but he has a fucking english accident

  • @MrMikeTyson123 Yeah,he is Irish also,actually.

  • @niloh96 true true

  • @niloh96 in the parkinson interview he says he's an englishman actualy

  • @gillri ''Actually'',his father was an Irishman from Co.Louth,he lives in Co.Wicklow with his Irish born children (two of whom are named Ronan and Cashel) and he has referred to himself as an Irishman in interviews for some of his work on the Irish films that made his career.

  • best movie wit deniel day lewis is gangs of new york

  • @Bodoms321 agreed

  • true brilliance!!

  • daniel day > johnny depp?

please, daniel day is such a pure artist. His superiority to Johnny Depp is so obvious it doesn't even need to be said.

  • @echoplex89 i actually dont think that. you know people dont take johnny depp seriously cause he does all these disney-esque movies but hes actually a great actor(maybe not the calibre of day lewis but still)

  • @echoplex89 I think that they are different more than anything else. Depp is just a natural, and he doesn't seem to even really try. He is just a pure organic actor who has benefited a bit from education but overall is just a quirky guy with amazing natural talent.

DDL is naturally gifted as well, but not as much. Where he surpasses everyone else is in pure dedication and rigorous application of various acting principles. He is the ultimate method actor, and always will be.

  • @Samus1234567890 he is not method whatsoever. read up on Stanislavsky and Strasberg, and then watch more DDL interviews. He doesn't use steps and rules, he uses raw imagination.

  • @LotharioRowe Are you sure? I'm pretty sure he studied Stanislavsky for like 4 years. Also, Stanislavsky and Strasberg were not remotely similar. Stanislavsky made many changes to his "method". It's focus was imagination where as Strasberg's method was effective memory.

  • @spxeli Yea he says in this interview he was taught Stanislavsky in school...but it's clear from later interviews that his approach to creation varies greatly from any method...which is why in many interviews he dispels the myth that he's intentionally trying to keep his approach "mysterious," but rather, he's just not quite sure how to objectify it. I just want to make sure it's known DDL should by no means be considered the "ultimate method actor." His art is far superior to method.

  • @spxeli Stanslavsky introduce many things that Lee Strasberg still uses today. Lee Strasberg has enhanced from there to make The Method, which includes relaxation, sensory and emotional memory. Which you need to use your imagination to recreate, rather than using imaginary circumstances/tools to create for yourself on the spot. TO say that Daniel Day Lewis is a "method" actor is wrong. He uses a method, in the definitive sense of the word but he's designed it himself.

  • @ConwayJCalvin And I know you didn't actually start talking about that, I just felt as though it needs to be said. And it is above and below me in these comments...but I guess I need to vent it out as well. Everyone calls DDL a "method" actor. He's just doing what he needs to do to convince himself of his character by dedicating everything he has towards it because he has no other purpose in this world.

  • @ConwayJCalvin The problem is, if every actor in the business gave as much of a shit as Daniel Day Lewis, we would have some fucking good movies. But the work ethic is remarkably low and dare I say, just American. He's an inspiration, Gary Oldman, Christian Bale, THESE ARE ALL NON AMERICANS. FANCY THAT. They appreciate what a good day's work is worth, and what it's worth to do some thing extra. Johnny Depp is trying so hard to be a european rock and roll surrealist bullshitter...makes me sick.

  • @ConwayJCalvin I never said Daniel Day-Lewis was a method actor... And anyone that knows about acting is aware that Stanslavsky realized that sensory and emotional memory was flawed. He made many changes to his acting technique to the point it had nothing to do with those things. In fact, he's on record saying the only American teacher that understood his techniques were Stella Adler.

  • @Samus1234567890 You're an idiot.

  • @ConwayJCalvin Thanks for keeping it civil...dick.

  • greatest actor of all time

    easy

    (number 1 fanboy)

  • "huge" is not enough for this man

  • why do people need to compare actors? not saying johnny is in daniel's class but then again VERY few are. still, depp is an amazing actor and this is coming from a HUGE lewis fan.

  • It's incredible to watch this and think about all of his roles. He literally transforms himself.

  • Ok, Johnny Depp is not a movie star, he is a terrific actor. Smh.

  • @spursfan4life817 "A terrific actor" - this can be said about Daniel. Johnny just a very good actor.

  • @MrSeduction7 johnny deppp could be great- but he seems to prefer acting cartoon roles, in shit movies.

  • @boyleb1 thank you someone finally said it! johnny depp ain't got shit on Daniel day-lewis.

  • @spursfan4life817 I strongly disagree. I think he is both, but I am inclined to describe him more as a movie star.

  • Crucible? Fuck yeah.

  • I would've NEVER thought that that man sitting there... is Bill the Butcher..

NEVER!! his face doesn't even look alike! damnit

  • a handsome fucker too...

  • I think this current generation of actors are absolutely amazing, from DDL to Depp, dicaprio, wahlberg, to Ledger (rip), to Brad Pitt, to the amazing Gary Oldman. there are many others, but these guys really stand out. unlike Rock music, boxing, live or filmed TV entertainment, which has gone so far south its embarrassing, these guys have taken acting to a whole new level. Bravo.

  • @filolovejoy , great post minus the "whole new level" especially in regards to Depp, Wahlberg and Pitt. Not that they aren't decent but they definitely aren't raising the bar by any means.

  • @Blackwwoolff Ok, I'll give you that. but Depp's willingness to take on almost anything and make it his own (almost) is cool, Pitt's performance in Snatch which made me piss myself with laughter shows me something as well, and Wahlberg,,, well, yeah. but I still like him.

  • @filolovejoy , yeah I think the thing is though (regarless of era) some guys have other intangible qualities that can make them as enjoyable as someone with more technical skill. Like Clint Eastwood for example isn't Marlon Brando, but the guy's fascinating to watch just being himself basically and the fact that Depp isn't content to just do the common things and that he can basically be himself and its entertaining is great and Pitt had me rolling in Inglorious, lol.

  • I'm not gay or anything but fuck is he one goodlooking guy

  • His talent is not of this Earth.

  • IF HOLLYWOOD HAD A COLLEGE DANIEL DAY LEWIS WOULD BE TEACHING " ACTING 101"

  • DDL is the best character actor of all time!!!!

  • i wish i had his voice

  • oh my god his voice is hypnotising!!!! and he has tattoos (L) hahahaha the best actor ever!!

  • He is such an artist: "It seemed almost luminous in that twilight." I absolutely love this man.

  • i can't think of one actor who can play roles as diverse as his. johnny depp and gary oldman are the only ones who come close. and i think ledger was well on his way

  • Daniel Day Lewis AS "Lincoln" that shit is confirmed!!! FUCK YEA

    Brooklyn!!!

  • the music when daniel day lewis walks on stage to sounds like something to a bad porno

  • @bspar2248 lol

  • People that liked my left foot will maybe also like these films (Films with people with mental illness in a leading role) : What's eating Gilbert Grape, I am sam, One flew over the CookCooks Nest.

  • @Sn0okkz Good recommendations, although "you should never go full retard" like Sean did in I Am Sam...hehehe

  • @adamtzsch

DDL did not play a 'retard'...his character in My Left Foot is not mentally ill or mentally handicapped. He's got a neurological disorder. He's fully able to comprehend everything and everyone around him. His character is quite brilliant..

  • @ShannonSam1 You make a great point which I completely agree with, thank you. I was sort of flippantly quoting Robert Downey Jr. in Tropic Thunder, just for a laugh. I'm sorry if I've caused offence. I was only interested in this clip in the first place because I'm a huge fan of DD-L and this movie, and it's been years since I've seen it.

  • @adamtzsch

I wasn't offended,,,I was ,just making the distinction. I was reacting to the whole conversation about other films about mentally handicapped film, not just your comment.

    Don't sweat it.

  • ah. there are no words here...just...he is the best.

  • I wanna throw my 2 cents in here but I see people are talking about great actors and even before I saw this video I always told people, " You know who is underrated as an actor?" That is Steve Buscemi. That guy is really good.

  • @mmagenius2 he isnt underrated... thrust me, if you got a leading role in a quintin tarentino movie you are not underrated, but yea steve buscemi is a great guy

  • Sean Penn is good too.

  • I like to base an actor on their commitment to the role i love method actors DDL is so committed to roles that even when he got pneumonia while wearing clothes constantly from 1860s New York he refuse to change his clothes so he could stay in the character of Bil the Butcher

  • @DAYUMedia DDL has never perceived himself on "Method acting" he said...He uses no form of acting of any sort. He relies on his instinct!! But i know where your coming from!!

    Brooklyn, NY

  • Daniel Day > Johnny Depp

  • @enlargemedia Although, both of them, and Heath Ledger were all very good friends. I'd go as far to say as they share the same method of acting.

  • @enlargemedia I looove people like you that are so narrow minded that you always have to compare/judge one artist to another. A gift that you may want to give to yourself, is to UNDERSTAND/APPRECIATE is that you happen to alive when BOTH amazing actors happen to be alive during your life time.

  • @enlargemedia I looove people like you that are so narrow minded that you always have to compare/judge one artist to another. • @sldesign1 bro daniel day lewis was insulted for even being compared to johnny depp. I mean johnny depp is a bona fide movie star, and daniel day lewis is a actor

  • @malows1234 I agree that Daniel Day Lewis is way better than depp. But depp does have the capacity to be a good actor. He just needs to be more selective about his work.

  • @IronManOfficialguy no depp needs to make sure that disney pulls the cock out of his ass becausse its disney's 50 million dollar paychecks that are corrupting him. i mean depp did excellent films like Ed wood, sweeney todd, but now wtf...... alice in wonderland? pirates 4? charlie and the choclate factory? TOURIST? he is probably too rich to give a fuck but he is ruining his career.

  • @IronManOfficialguy

Agreed. DDL for me is in a completely different league. He has to be compared with Brando, Deniro etc. Depp is a good actor. He is good in eccentric roles, but DDL is raw power. You never see DDl in any of his movies. You see the character either it is In the name of father, there wil be blood, Gangs of NY or My left foot.

  • @enlargemedia

    DDL>everyone

  • @enlargemedia Lol man. In Mathematics > means "greater than. Oh. That was the point wasn't it? fuck.

  • @enlargemedia you just fucking compared johnny depp to daniel day lewis, omfg, why dont you compare him to fucking ashton kutcher..... i mean give me a break johnny depp is a fucking movie star. daniel day lewis is a actor

  • @malows1234 They're both MAGICAL actors. Only DDL is making a house disappear, Depp's a card trick.

  • @ewanmcfadyen I like that, well put. :)

  • @enlargemedia ummmm yeah pretty much lol I would just like him to do more. But hey thats part of DDL's genius. He's like a solar eclipse.

  • @enlargemedia They're equally great.

  • @Mr11MUSICMAN Not in this world, Daniel Day Lewis is 1000 times better

  • @blitzkrieg969 Well......

    yeah

  • @enlargemedia easily

  • @enlargemedia moar like johnny DERP, amirite?!

  • @enlargemedia I think it's unfair to compare the two. Johnny Depp is a great actor and a movie star but DDL is a profound actor, he is one of the most versatile, amazing and talented actors to ever grace the earth. He owns the craft. You just shouldn't compare. It's almost insulting.

  • @epitomeofexotic

Apples and Oranges I agree. I also don't mind saying I think Leonardo Dicaprio is still evolving and an extremely lucid individual. Some actors lose themselves, who they really are etc. While actors like Daniel D. Lewis and Jonny Depp remain intact as to who they really are. I think that Leo is more discerning with which roles he takes than Depp. But Depp did Edward Scissorhands. My favorite film character next to Bill the butcher. Like I said though: apples and oranges!

  • @enlargemedia Unnecessary

  • @enlargemedia well yeah haha. That's like saying Marlon Brando is better than Christian Bale. Both fantastic method actors, but one is on a whole other level than the other.

  • @xombimonkey Yeah Bale. I've never seen him doing hammy acting like Brando did in the Godfather. But of course Brando is American and the American press have him as no.1... Day Lewis is the greatest actor ever. Nobody has such a diverse portfolio of work. Genius (i'm going at Brando a bit there, obviously a genius but The Godfather winds me up and his performance is so OTT)

  • @iloveneytiri Brando was a terrific actor. Because he's American, American's put him as the greatest actor of all time? Isn't that what you're doing as a Brit with Day-Lewis? Brando's catalog is just as diverse as Day-Lewis' imo.

  • @spxeli No what i'm saying Brando did some rather hammy, almost jokey performances such as Superman and The Godfather. The American media portray him as the best ever. I disagree. Obviously in certain films he gave some truly stunning performances and paved the way for the likes of Day Lewis. My argument is about the American media portraying him, DeNiro and Pacino as the top dogs (hell even Hanks is up there with them in the US media) and I feel its a little biased. Also I'm not British!!

  • @enlargemedia

why compare them..they are both good!

  • don't really like this host very much

  • His little accent is so cute. Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

  • No, only 2 supreme actors today. All others mentioned are good, but do not have the range of these two.

    #1. DDL

    #2 Sean Penn

If Brando was alive I would of squeezed him in there...

  • @toby099 SEAN PENN HAHAHAHAHAHA.

    That was so funny......

  • @judgementdey ...Philip Seymour Hoffman? While very foreign to DDL in style- he is his only equal. Or even the other way around.

  • @nbate107 PSH is good I just dont think he has the versatility as the three i listed.

I would love to see him in something where he is completly opposite of himself

  • Thanks SO much for putting this on Youtube. I took professor Brown's course in 1999 and I LOVED it! It was the most favorite course that I ever took in my entire life, seriously. If you are a true movie lover and live in NYC, Movies 101 should not be missed.

  • he will be remembered more than likely as one of the top 3 greatest actors of all time along with brando and deniro, and i think about brando's interviews and how brando, with how immense his ego was, wouldnt even straightforwardly answer any questions, but day-lewis is such a down to earth, normal gentleman. One of the all-time greats long before his career is over.

  • Best actors

    DDL

    Marlon Brando

    Jack Nicholson

  • The five best actors in the U.S. and U.K.:

    1.) Robert De Niro

    2.) Daniel Day-Lewis

    3.) Anthony Hopkins

    4.) Al Pacino

    5.) Sean Penn

  • @HarveyDentLives I love De Niro but I honestly think DDL is far better. De Niro like Pacino has been pretty one dimensional a lot of his films. But when he does something out of his norm it is brilliant, like The King of Comedy which I think is his finest performance.

  • good list but i would say

    1 Daniel day lewis

    2 sir Ben Kingsley

    3 Marlon Brando

  • Another remark : He is so eloquent. Except (maybe) for Edward Norton, I haven't heard a better actor answer questions...

  • This is the greatest actor of our generation. A cameleon with such presence, talent and modesty that it almost hurt the others to get their names mentionned along his.

  • L E G E N D

  • judgementdey, you forgot Philip Seymour Hoffman. -nods with fervor-

  • Such a gentleman. Greatest actor of our time and a huge inspiration.

  • The host of this show could pull of a pretty descent Al Pacino if he had a bit more practice :)

  • Christ, but he's beautiful...his nickname at school was "Daniel Day-Pin-Up"

  • He is a Master!!!

  • one of the best actors of all time

  • THE BEST!!!

  • @MultiT100 ONE? HAHA

  • @MultiT100 The best actor alive *****

  • an absolute genius.

  • God! I love him

  • This interviewer is doing a technique which hypothetically connects with and makes the person interviewed calm called mirroring or chameleoning. He sucks dick at it. Just watch when ddl changes his feet criss crossing. Read any Tony Robbins book and youll see the amateur method in detail. When you do it like him you look like a phony uneducated. Fuck this guy. Im drunk btw.

  • @roch1786 lolz

  • true artist...

  • the greatest Actor of all time...

  • Without a doubt.

  • girl at 1:09 - whoa.

  • What happened to this show? I've never seen it before thanks for posting this!

  • anyone think that we'll live to see the day to hear of DDL signing up for some hyper comerical film?

coz i was just reading that McG offered him a SUPPORTING role in Terminator 4. THE CHEEK!

  • If you don't ask, you don't get. If you were in a position to offer DDL a role, wouldn't you at least try? As a side note, it would be interesting to see him and Christian Bale team up some day.

  • After seeing this, and it's a really great interview, I really wonder why DDL has consistently declined a James Lipton interview.

  • coz James Lipton has become a joke. you know he said that the guy who did Undercover Brother was "an icon of his times"!

i just remember the guy's name, Eddie Griffin, but i'm too lazy to delete anything i've written before this paragraph.

  • I remember when "Inside the Actor's Studio" was actually prestigious. Now it's just another stop on a celebrity's junket. Too bad. Come to think of it, ALL of Bravo used to be good. The first time I saw a Wim Wenders film was on Bravo.

  • ...umm hes prob the greatest actor to ever live. amazing man.

  • yes I'm not disputing his amazing talent, he is my favourite actor too..I am just saying his real life persona is off-putting for me

  • I see your point. Whenever I let someone borrow Gangs though I have a little note inside that says they should look up one of these interviews just to see how he really is so thay can better understand the transformation. I think he was robbed of that oscar too.

  • That's what makes it acting....HELLO!!!!!!

  • Nothing wrong with speaking eloquently and being flamboyant in his case since he seems like a compassionate and good person.

  • posh ppl dont dress like that and have such simple haircuts lol

  • This guy ripped off the great james lipton. i kill you!

  • Eat your heart out, James Lipton.

  • 3 best actors of today.

    1. Daniel day Lewis

    2. Gary oldman.

    3. Edward norton

  • I agree with your first two choices, though I'd rate Sean Penn above Edward Norton. I always liked Penn

  • I hate Pnn. He's an asshole.

  • His personality isn't really important. He's produced some great work over the years.

  • I personally would add Johnny Depp since he's my favorite actor

  • Good choices. Some other choices ought to be Ralph Fiennes and Johnny Depp.

  • Phillip Seymour Hoffman? Sean Penn?

  • YEAH pHILIP sEYMOUR IS A TOP ACTOR on that list

  • you forgot to include philip seymour hoffman

  • wow, wouldnt put in any better order! =D

  • Why Norton? He's not very versitale..

  • 3 Reasons

    1. American History X

    2.Fight Club

    3.Primal Fear

  • and Death to Smoochy

  • @graeypoet hey, that was an amazing movie!!! lmao
