@tittidee I still think it is a PBass. Shouldn't a "Telebass" need a singlecut body to be considered a "telecaster bass"? But appart from that,I think the other difference between the Fender Telebass and the PBass is the pickup. A Telebass has a humbucker type very close to the neck, while the Pbass has the original pickup configuration (in this case the non-splitted one). But I don't pretend to be a Fender Encyclopedia, you might be right on that one, but I need to be convinced! ;-) Cheers
@tittidee there does exist a singlecut tele-shape bass, not coincidentally made by leo fender's company, G & L; it's called the ASAT. And yes, there have been telebass reissues, so it may well be one, rather than an ancient original.
@Stipe1405 Well I beg to differ.... back in 64 in ...Jr high school... this was the "break" tune that the in-house rock band always played. They had a 3 piece horn section which is what is really need to play it right. It's what all us white kids learned to do the two-step to. Played more like the Poncho Sanchez live version however. It's been a cool song for more than 50 years.
I love this track. To this very day, I still practice to it. Ms. Terri Lyne Carrington kept the funky pulse. Most people don't know that this song was written by a great drummer, Harvey Mason. When this song was written, Herbie Hancock, in my opinion, was at the top of his game.
It "ain't true man..." Meaning, what you're saying isn't true. This version is a new version of Watermelon man. If you juxtapose the two songs, they both go in two different directions - they simply have the same name and are both headlined by the same artist. But Harvey Mason did write this version. Yes, Herbie Hancock did write Watermelonman in the 60s, and yes, the HeadHunters did redo it - and Mr. Mason is given credit was the writer.
The song ends the same way it begins, with Bill Summers, the percussionist, blowing on the beer bottles, along with Harvey Mason, the drummer, and the bassist easing out with that funky groove...I suggest you buy the CD - Headhunters, to really appreciate the song. You won't go wrong.
Is that Roy Hargrove on Trumpet and Spanky on guitar? This is great stuff, it's shame how Americans don't support Jazz like we should. It's disgraceful that Jazz artists have to go abroad to make a deent living. I bought the Headhunters CD about 6 years ago and I haven't stop listening to it yet. It stays in heavy rotation.

@thibo62
Yes it is a Pbass, as the 'telebass' was the first precision bass. Or first electric bass if im not mistaken.
I havent seen a bass that has the singlecut body of the telecaster guitar.
The bass Marcus Miller is playing in the video has the moosehead and the oldschool singlecoil pickup, hence telebass :D
You may be right about it being a reissue tho.
Regards.

if the album Headhunters was in 1973, then there's absolutely no way Watermelon Man tune can be from the sixties.....???
Stipe1405 1 year ago
Herbie recorded it twice. The first time was a straight ahead jazz album, then he recorded this version with the electric band.
