1: Knowledge is a good thing. Get a degree in something not Ag related as a backup plan, and possibly as a way to get startup money for the farm.
2: Learn how to market grain. Start paper trading now. There is more money to be made by good marketing than there is in that extra 10 bushels per acre of yield.
3: Use Google Chrome. It has spell check and would have caught "dou" and "edvice".
I'm just a backyard gardener of corn. Can somebody tell me why the corn is being picked when the stalks are all brown? When I pick my corn everything is still green.
@jonasnight The corn needs to be dry to store it, and it only dries down when the plant is dead. I'm guessing you are thinking of sweet corn, which is harvested before it is fully mature.
Thanks MX, Like I said I'm just a backyard gardener at this point. Do you want your corn dry so you can feed it to animals or can it? I'm curious as to why it has to be dry in the first place. THanks,
@jonasnight This corn will mostly go to ADM and be turned in to ethanol, corn syrup, etc. It has to be below 15% moisture to store for any length of time. For example, at 19% moisture, it will only keep for 3-4 days. It is a lot different than the sweet corn that you buy in a can or eat right off the ear.
Thanks MX, I find this stuff interesting and I got to start somewhere. You made me work with ADM abbreviation but I deduced it was Archer Daniels Company after doing a quick search. Well thanks again your videos are real good!
Awesome video - thanks for posting. I dont know much about harvesting corn - hope you dont mind if i ask a silly question or two: The straw(the chopped corn stalks coming out the back of the combine) looks like its just spread on the ground, can a baler be used to collect it? And secondly, am I right in thinking that a corn header with a "snapper" sends just the ear of the corn into the combine? if so, then that header must be a straw chopper too?
Yes, corn stalks can be baled. They can be used as bedding for livestock. The corn head pulls the stalk down, and the ear gets pulled off. The ear goes into the combines, and the stalk doesn't. The knives that pull the stalk down do cut it up some, but not much. They do make corn heads with stalk choppers built in, if you want the trash to be in smaller pieces.
l wanna meet you because l am a farmer in turkey and we are interested in corn in these year because of climinate condition also we are planting onion, whistle, sunflower, potato so l wanna be informed by you if you send me your msn adress l will be appreciated ...thanks
That is just incredible. Thank you so much for posting.

Funny how we always finish a field at the far, back corner. It never works out to finish by the driveway for some reason.
Great operation. Too bad you have that one green wagon. It clashes a little with all the red equipment!

GMO is bad for plants, earth, livestock, and people. Monsanto and the likes of them have trapped farmers financially it seems.

I agree with the others, very impressive. How did you photograph this? You seemed to be right in the path of the tractor.

I was standing in the basket of a man lift, similar to what the power company uses to work on overhead lines. You can see the shadow of it at 4:10.

If you want to get 30 feet above the combine in western PA, you just walk 60 feet up the hill, and you're there!

Good to see someone gathering some decent looking corn this year. Down here in west Tennessee we are making about a half corn crop. Good video.

From a lift that went over the combine. You can see it's shadow in a couple of the frames in the lower left corner.

Awesome! This is how a hawk would see a combine, too.
