I used to live on 5th street so really close to the river. It's sad to think my home that i've lived in for 8 years was damaged. it looks okay, but it's not okay.
Impressive images, Jim! I hope that the city will be again as it was before in a little time, my friend. Here in Brasil the same type of problem is happening in a region of the south of the country, but now. The spring here is very rainy. But, in the region about which I talk, the rain was much stronger than the waited and the result is a calamity similar to this one presented in your video.
Despite everything, I wish you a happy Christmas and a new year with great health and peace!
Oh Jim, looks like you`ve seen better years in your life than this 2008...I`m so sorry...But now it will be over and nothing will go wrong anymore...believe...
This was the worst I've ever seen around here Laura. We always seem to dodge bad weather in the summer, but this was a late spring kick that we couldn't run away from. Lots of snow and two or three torrential rains upstream made for one sad month.
Never been in an area that flooded anything close to this Jim. What devistation it caused in your home town. I felt so bad for all your neighbors and friends to have to deal with such devistation! I miss the A&W Drive in's! Used to take the kids there for a pajama ride in the evenings a lot...if they were good! lol Glad you are past this now Jim!
I was downtown last night Dallas and it's so quiet. Usually, the holiday is keeping shop keepers busy but not this year. That's the only A&W we have left in town and it's a landmark around here. I'll miss the summer cruise nights they had, but I think they'll re-open but it'll take awhile.
Wow. I grew up on the 'other side' of the State, near Sioux City, and far enough away we only once had to evacuate due to flooding (it got only basement level at our house). That was a nasty year (early 60's ), and where we were, nothing like Cedar Rapids' 2008 disaster. Great choice of music to accompany the photos! And, it's Iowa -- you are right, you'll be back!
This flood made 1993 look like nothing special. That flood was disasterous along the Mississippi, but here it never came over the river walls. Don't get me wrong, 1993 was bad, but 2008 was catastrophic in every way possible. Thanks for taking a look!
thanks Jim for this video, with all those photos it's easier understanding what it was all about! (It's hard imagine what's really like when only reading about it.)
Jim, that was awesome. I live 4 miles from the Potomac River, and we had our 100-year flood back in November 1985 during Hurricane Juan. Paw Paw was almost wiped off the map. Our main industries never recovered. But we're a hardy lot, just like you all are, and we stayed because it's home. Hope you're doing OK. Haven't heard from you in a while, and I'm really worried.
It made everything else seem so trivial at the time Jim. Our business at the restaraunt
doubled because everything downtown was wiped out. Plus we were feeding all the city officials from here and neighboring states that came to help us. Thank you for watching.
Those people you saw at the beginning that were sandbagging...Like I said, the water downtown would rise to almost 8 feet deep or more. I can't imagine still living down there still...they were all older beautiful neighborhoods. They'll return but to what degree remains to be seen. Thanks Bill.
I know what you mean Jim-there are people in the UK still living in temporary buildings here after bad flooding in several parts of the country earlier this year and last year-these things take years to put right and some will never return-we ignore nature at our peril!

Good job as usual Jim. I wish I had a video camera. I would love to show people what the inside of my old house looks like now. Not much left.

The flood spread out so far in all directions
Shay. I spent all my married life living down in an area called Time Check (That's where the drive-in restaraunt at the beginning was).
If I still lived in one house there, only a small part of my roof would have been showing.
The initial river wall breach occured only 2 blocks away. I can't imagine what it was like
when the water started pouring in, especially if you lived right by the breach!
