This is what the real issue is, and this is how we eventually destroy all racism and discrimination and view every single human being as an equal and a brother or sister.
When slavery ended, that was the only thing that ended, nothing more, nothing less. People still saw blacks as less than human, as less deserving as their lighter skinned counterparts. What resulted afterwards was an ongoing struggle to justify their existence in society. Judging by all the comments I see on various sites, there is still reason for this struggle to continue. As I said before, no one has had any choice as to what they are born into, but we have a choice as to how we live.
No one living today has had any say into how they were brought into the world whether they are privileged or not. However, we have a choice as to how to treat others today. It wasn't the slavers but the apathy of the people who benefited from slavery that has allowed this atrocity to continue. Although slavery is gone, the apathetic mindset has lived. Each and every one of us doesn't think about what it takes to sustain Western Culture. It is still based on grossly unfair labor practices.

Who, today, needs an apology from a politician of today, for an evil of about 200 years ago? Yes, it was wrong, but it was over and done with long ago. When slavery ended, that was the only thing that ended, nothing more, nothing less. People still saw blacks as less than human, as less deserving as their lighter skinned counterparts. What resulted afterwards was an ongoing struggle to justify their existence in society. Judging by all the comments I see on various sites, there is still reason for this struggle to continue. As I said before, no one has had any choice as to what they are born into, but we have a choice as to how we live.

North African Islamic slaving was only stopped in the mid-19th century, when Napoleon III colonised the area and rid it of the Barbary pirates, who had for centuries raided the coast of western Europe for slaves as far north as the Netherlands.
Of course, Livingston would not want to cloud his simplistic message. As he is treating, by omission, one racial or cultural group (Islam) with favour in this matter, and demonising another (Europeans), his views and tears are those of the racist.

The Slave trade was abhorrent and disgusting and I think that the national day is a good call, I'd like to see the British Government and those citizens who helped to stop it be celebrated as well. We should feel immense shame but also pride in the fact that we are a great free society for all and have been for a long time. I would like to see ken condemn some equally abhorrent communist murder campaigns but he never will - he believes that murder in some cases is correct. Hypocrite.

I don't think we should feel IMMENSE shame. 1/ We didn't do it as it happened so long ago. 2/ It would never happen today. 3/ British Govt and citizens always opposed brutal sides of the trade. 4/ We never rounded up and captured slaves, they were provided at great costs to our merchants by African merchants. 5/ We abolished it. 6/ I agree with everything from the word 'pride'.
