hi i watched your vid thought it was very helpful .......could not find a cheap plug th8ing from any store so im gonna sacrifice my other ones but when cut and i take of the rubber thing from it will there be 3 holes for me to put the wires through ....what im trying to say is can i use other earphone plugs????? thankz
@jake57302 I have heard that it worked for other viewers, but I myself haven't tried it. You can give it a try and if it doesn't work try to find a plug from RadioShack like I show in the vid.
guys i didn't have any sandpaper so i tried a lighter. Just a second of heating it with a lighter will melt the coating, no need for a sandpaper. Thumps up so people know
How to get the headphones to work: go buy a sadderring gun. (about 8 bucks) go buy headphone jack ( even more money) go buy a hot glue gun ( just adding more money) not do a lot of work to fix them. Or........ Go buy new ones ( 10 bucks and no need to do all that work) hope I help :D
@INVOKEDdreamzHD It's "soldering" gun, which an entire kit is only $7, the actual jack is $4 for 2 of them, so if you're headphones are only worth $11, yeah, don't bother, but if you've got headphones that are any more then that, it's cheaper just to fix it yourself.
@FoxSquad32 Go to my 3rd video, your answer should be explained there. The 3rd video is hyperlinked in this video in the upper left corner. The name of the video is "#3 Fix or Repair Headphones with Microphone / Bass Boost ".
@shallowmoon123 If there is something wrong with the headphones (not playing sound right, etc.) then I would do this. If they are working fine, I would leave them alone.
@kairi7890 The 2 copper wires are both grounds (place on the large outside connector). The red goes on the outside small connector and the blue goes on the inside small connector (as explained at around the 5:40 time-point in the video). Any grit of sandpaper should work, I used a 200 grit in the video. Also, in my 3rd video - hyper-linked in the upper left corner of this video, I show another way to remove the enamel coating. Just go to the 6:10 time-point to see it. Thanks!
I used this tutorial on a pair of EX-29 headphones that I had. When I finished soldering and plugged it in, the headphones didn't even make any noise, except a loud click when it was plugged in and the ipod turned on.
@qaisar11111 Mine break off like every 4 months, so I'm prepared to invest in the fixing equipment. You can also use superglue instead of the glue gun and use nail scissors and and simple pliers for handling the wires.
It didnt work with me :S can i use a stick tape instead of using the welding gun ?? I tried ur way with 2 of my TRR headphones and didnt work but with using the stick tape instead of the welding gun and btw my headphones are not working in both left or right
@johnson12ification If you don't want to use a "welding gun" check out my 2nd video- I show a plug that doesn't require any "welding". You just tighten screws to attach it to the plug.
@RichsMethods I already got a 24 K gold plated TRR plug and i wanted to see if my headphones would work if i did this so i connected the wires as in the videos but as i havent got the welding gun so i just connected them but they didnt work I'm just asking if it got anything to do with soldering the wires or i have done something wrong :)
@johnson12ification You need something to connect the wires to the connectors. You would need the soldering gun or the screw retained plug I show in my 2nd video.
You say that the gold played jack can work without solder, which jack would you recommend? The solder one or the non solder one? Is there a difference in the quality because I want my bose headphones having the best quality I can get
@AAimons1 Do you feel the difference between your right and left headphones? Or do you mean different brands. Either way, most of the time the problem occurs at the plug so this method should be a good place to start.
Hi RichsMethods thanks mate. I like your presentation and patience. very informative. A question though... how do I know if the problem is in the jack or the speaker. I know it could be mostly Jack, however is there a way to make sure.
@granand Hey thanks for watching! Ya, it's kind of a guess. The way I tell is when you bend the headphone wire near the plug, the sound cuts in and out. If it's the speaker, the sound change won't be effected by how you bend the plug. 9 times out of 10 it's plug. Hope that helps!
I usually tin the jack connections first with a little bit solder and not fill in the hole in. Then when you put the wire in the hole to solder to the jack you know that you get a good mechanical connection (solder joint). It take a little more heat for the surface area of the jack then it does for the wire.
@the24fanpeoplepc Nice, thanks for the tip! I did this in my 3rd video, well kind of. I showed how to tin the wire but I didn't thread the wire through the hole in the plug.
@hopeless669 Do you mean headphones with a microphone? If you do, then check out my 3rd video hyperlinked in the upper corner of this video- I show what plug you'll need and how to attach it:) Thanks for watching!
omg you just repaired my 3 years old 100$ headphones. now they are exactly like new (if i forgot the wire is now half the size they was caus i tried like 10 times...) so thanks a lot RichsMethods
My headphone was broken already after a mounth i brought them and i could not get a new one since the wire was showing -_- so i had to repair them since it was chieper. Now my headphone is as good as new. So thanks "RichsMethods" so this video that helped alot. Thanks alot.
Amazing! Thank you so much! My girlfriend just got me a pair of expensive headphones and they got a short. I thought i would never be able to use them again but now i will be able to :D
@punkkyle99 Nice, they must of still been under warranty. When I called Bose, they told me my warranty was expired and that I could get a new pair from them for around $60-70 if I sent them my broken pair.
@UltimateCalmIT Yes you can. You can also bend the tabs at the end instead of adding hot glue. I did this in my 3rd video, hyperlinked in the upper left corner of this video. Just go to the 8:05 time-point in the 3rd video to see what I am talking about:) Thanks for watching!
I have to agree, this is the best tutorial!! I have the same Bose ear buds and my daughter borrowed them and boogied'em up (she was upset because she thought I'd be mad ... I was irritated but knew I could find a great tut here)! One tip for the soldering: touch the both wire and the contact with the soldering gun to get them hot and then touch the solder to the point of contact, this will allow the solder to flow onto the contact with less excess build-up and mess of solder.
do you have a video on how to fix headphone plugs? if you don't can you please make one cuz im sick and tired of finding out that the headphones i bought actually work and every time i move it will go from headphone to speakerphone or vice versa and i really think its the plug I would really appreciate it.
@crizempire Ah yes, blow some air in the plug with a compressor or canned air. Also try using a cue tip or a cotton ball wrapped around a tooth pick to clean the plug out. It's probably just dirty.
i have some klipsch S4 and they are staring to do the same thing but i am afraid of trying to fix them beacuse i dont want to damage them has anyone ever sent earphone to you so you can fix and paid you? i hope you reply thanks
Is there a way to replace the ear-buds? i LOVE my in-ear earphones but the jack broke :(. i have apple earphones which are VERY durable (had them for over a year). so, if there a way to replace the ear-buds of the apple ones with the in-ear ones? (also their music quality is better? if you know, can you please make a video? thanks.
@Phuru1 You could possibly do it, thanks for the idea! It might be easier though to just add a new plug. I'll place this on my list of "Videos to do..." ha.
@RichsMethods All of my headphones do the same thing so i think it may be my audio jack inside of my ipod (where you insert the headphone audio jack. im not sure how to fix this because apple said they dont fix there own stuff :fp: the same thing happend to my last ipod and now i am worried because i dont want to buy a new ipod. any fixes for this? thanks.
THIS IS THE BEST TUTORIAL FOR FIXING HEADPHONE JACK ISSUES ON THE INTERNET! One side of my $140 Bose headphone earbuds quit working. The rubber piece at the connection site of the jack had separated and the wires began fraying. I took it to 2 different electronic repair stores and both said they could not be repaired. I found this video and followed all the steps and fixed them!!! I couldn't believe it! It was very easy and the steps were clear. Thank you Rich! You saved me a lot of $!
Thanks for the info! Needed to fix my Beats and it worked like a charm! And I happen to have a Gold plated stereo plug from radiohshack laying around!
thanks for the vid i bought the gold plated earphone jack thought it was easier with the screws than soldering , you saved my skullcandy headphones thanks a lot
@emmanueltt3 The short is probably in the wire itself near the headphones (not at the plug). Keep bending the wire and see if you can locate where the short is occurring. I'd suggest laying the wire on a table while it's plugged into something, that way you could manipulate the wire more easily in smaller increments. Once you figure out where the short is, you can cut out the bad portion and reconnect the wires using similar methods I show in this video (just twist the wires together).
@SwiftaV93 The sound may only work in one ear phone instead of both. And ya, they are pretty touchy. It may not be a complete silence, but it will be noticeable.
@SwiftaV93 I just answered your most recent question first...ha. sorry about that. Yes, it probably is from one of the wires contacting each other on the plug. If the Ground (copper wire) is touching another wire there would be no sound produced in either headphone.
Hey, so i was trying your method earlier on today and got stupmed, my headphones has 3 wires, Blue, green and copper, now this aside when i scraped off the Enamel part of the coloured wires i get this furry strands of what appears to be wires. Are thos the actual wires or...?
@SwiftaV93 You seem to have already figured this, but yes, the wires to appear thread like. I show a better way to remove the enamel coating in my third video (Video #3) hyperlinked in this video. Go to the 6:10 time-point in the video to see this method! Hope you get them to work and thanks for watching!
@xitsKittox Probably not because it sounds like the short is occurring at the jack itself in your case. You could buy a cheap pair of stereo headphones and connect the plug from that pair. Only one person so far has said that worked though- so just be aware (I've never tried it).
excuse me sir but i just brought some ifrogz for 14.99 like two days ago and now the right headphone is not working (not ear buds mind you) please need assistance
@lupin1st Yes, well sort of, check out my "Video #3" hyperlinked in the upper left corner of this video. It describes a plug needed for headphones with a built in microphone / volume adjustment. It also describes how to tell if you need the plug based off how it looks. Good luck and let me know if you need more help. Thanks for watching!
totally fixed mine right now, but i didnt use your method cause i for 1 didnt have the equipment, and two 2 i just stripped the wiring from another jack, and cut off the other crappy jack that didnt work, began splicing the wires and hooking up the wires correctly lol, but your video gave me a better idea on how to fix my skull candy's so lol thank you for helping me out ahah. peace out.
@19f97 Not when you use high end headphones. Today I fixed a pair of Shures and a pair of Ultimate Ears (from before they were bought out). It took $10 worth of materials and one hour of time to repair $300 worth of headphones. (and yes, they are worth)
I will try these techniques with a par of earphones that went out tonight. Sometimes the sounds comes back but it is not working well. I bought it at a computer store, micro center, for 5 bucks and it only worked well 7 months. Basically I had problems for weeks. Forced into watching videos without the headphones but I may disrupt the household. And if I play music it might be loud so I had to lower the volume.
@SlAkWuN Yes for this plug you must use a soldering gun, super glue won't work. If you don't want to solder, check out my "Video #2" hyper linked in the upper left corner of this video. It shows a plug that connects exactly the same way as the plug in this video; however, you screw the wires into place instead of soldering. Just a suggestion. Thanks for watching!
Will this work for headphones that are only working when I bend the wire around?

can I use the old jack ?? the headphones are new I have to move around the base of the jack for sound:/
xitsKittox 1 month ago
@xitsKittox Probably not because it sounds like the short is occurring at the jack itself in your case. You could buy a cheap pair of stereo headphones and connect the plug from that pair. Only one person so far has said that worked though- so just be aware (I've never tried it).

@RichsMethods oh okay, thanks:]

@54therunner When you move the wire near the plug does the sound go in and out? Or doesn't it work at all even if you bend the wire?

Does this method also work for the build in mic /remote earphones ?
lupin1st 1 month ago
@lupin1st Yes, well sort of, check out my "Video #3" hyperlinked in the upper left corner of this video. It describes a plug needed for headphones with a built in microphone / volume adjustment. It also describes how to tell if you need the plug based off how it looks. Good luck and let me know if you need more help. Thanks for watching!

it´s cheaper to just buy a new pair, lol.
19f97 1 month ago
@19f97 Not cheaper when you already have the tools around.
MrTarekCO 1 month ago

@RichsMethods is that towards the first question or second?
dudeolater 1 month ago
does it have to be 1/8"? could it be 3.5mm?
dudeolater 1 month ago
@dudeolater Yes.
RichsMethods 1 month ago
@RichsMethods But if I need to fix 3.5mm jack headphones does it still need to be 1/8"?
AleksaPesic99 1 month ago in playlist How To Repair Earphones
@AleksaPesic99 No, the 3.5mm jack and 1/8" jack are the same jack. You don't need to buy the 1/8"

Do yu have to use the soldering thing? Or can yu replace it with superglue ? Im gonna go buy this stuff today to fix my headphones
SlAkWuN 1 month ago
@SlAkWuN Yes for this plug you must use a soldering gun, super glue won't work. If you don't want to solder, check out my "Video #2" hyper linked in the upper left corner of this video. It shows a plug that connects exactly the same way as the plug in this video; however, you screw the wires into place instead of soldering. Just a suggestion. Thanks for watching!
