It's not about a brothel, its about Geisha. It's a Geisha house. The difference is Geisha were NOT whores or prostitutes, which by calling it a brothel, you insinuate.
I am not sure I can call this film masterful, but it was well worth watching and had many touching moments in it. The story is about a brothel in 1600's(?) Japan, and the women who worked in it. They lead lives of disappointment and resignation to their fate as soiled women except for the young O-Shin who falls for her customers believing each man is the one who will love her for her (despite the life she was forced to lead). Put The Sea Is Watching on your must see list.

Directed beautifully and acted to perfection, this is one foreign language movie which echoes beauty... a nice movie that you can watch at
