thanks btw e106mkfd those were real fire trucks todays are nice but they dnt hav the power of the older ones im 16 and i kno this very well truckings been in my life 4 a while as well as firefighting
ima correct my self a 8v92ta(turbo charged aftercooled) and the engine tanker i used to ride i lived bout a mile and a half from the station if i missed dispathch i could just step outside and hear it that is when they werent on the q and the power call lol
Nice Video. Cool to see where the fire department has come from and evolved over the years. I agree -TheFireman203 definatly gotta love a Detroit Engine. You can hear them coming.
Because back then you didn't have to ride in the engine. It was perfectly legal to ride the tailboard, when the engine arrived they could drop off their hydrent guy instantly and pull foreward, then the crew would be off in seconds and start doing stuff.
Much faster then our way of waiting for everybody to get out one by one (If your on a busy road), but theres a reason we can't ride the tailboard anymore :p
gtta love that detroit even tho this unit isnt a peirce it still sounds good if u wnna hear some thing that sounds good listin to a peirce lance with a 6v-53 motor beutiful long live lance engine-tankers
Listen to that 6V-53 scream!!! This is so classic!! Back in the 1970's most fire trucks sounded just like this, only most at that time had manual transmissions.
When I got on the job in '81, we had a Pioneer just like that only older. That truck screamed like in was going 100mph but it could barely get out of its own way! A neighboring dept. had one with a Chrysler industrial GAS engine in it. Circa 1968.
There's a dept. down the road from us that has an 80's model ALF for a 1st due Crash Truck, that thing will send chilld down your spine when it takes off!!! :>)
Oh, 'fanoseagrave'....thanx for all the referrals :>)
I can not remember the last time a saw a Fire Fighter riding on the back. When I was young I thought that was the coolest thing, then the Fireman would wave at you and make your day! By the way great 6V53 Sounds
In fact I could close my eyes and imagine that's Philadelphia's Ladder 24 turning off of Haverford Rd. going up 64th St. towards Lansdowne Ave. in West Philly.
(See "1969 Seagrave Tiller Philadelphia Fire Dept").
was that engine a gas v8?

why are they riding the tailboard if the engine has back seats?

did anyone else notice the guys on the back of the truck?
4whelrkd23 3 years ago
Compare this with "1960 American LaFrance Running Hot." Compare the sounds of the 6V-53 engines in both apparatus.

BCTHS2011 3 years ago
For safety reasons it was made law about 1991 to have fully enclosed cabs on all new fire apparatus to get firefighters off of the tailboard.

yeah. lots fell off

To me the Detroit 6V-53 has the greatest engine sound of all time. Back in the 1970's they were EVERYWHERE. 6-71's were for the much larger trucks.

It was THAT slow? Sounds like you either had some significant hills in your first due or maybe your differential was too high.

Man I miss those open jumpseats in the back ;>(.
I love to hear those 6V53's roar!!! :>)
