Are you really comparing them on guitar? Springsteen will never be confused with being a "great" guitarist (like Clapton, Hendrix, et. al), he's one of the best overall performers of the last 20 years and an incredible song writer. Morrello, on the other hand, could have a case made that he belongs on any list the greatest pure rock guitar players. The Ghost of Tom Joad is a great song, all songs can't be some clown screaming into a microphone.

What makes that performance is the whole song not just the rips. When you take the actual song away you cheapen the work as a whole. Just my opinion. i remember watching the whole special and watching this performance 3 times. It truly was an amazing collection of artists. Also, I am amazed at how good a singer Bono is!

any comparing the two musicians is completely ubsurd. the point of this performance was to showcase morellos playing and to have the two contrasting styles between him and springsteen. it is a cohesive body of music, not a contest. besides springsteen is a great singer songwriter who can play a mean guitar. and morello is a renowned virtuoso with a completely original sound

I think this solo redefines the classic guitar lead for the 21st century...seems like Hendrix's star spangled banner in the 60's, Freebird or Stairway to Heaven in the 70s, Mars and any number of Smith's songs along with the energy of punk in the 80s...anyhow the point is this is an amazing guitar solo that forever changes guitar greatness (for me)...and Springsteen is America's greatest artist and storyteller, he makes me believe that America can represent something good....

yeah I though of that, but by having both of their solos you can enjoy the difference in talent more clearly. Springsteen is certainly more prolific song writer but Morello is clearly a better soloist.
