Russia is the only country now days setting themselves apart form the rest. They will be back. Romania is struggling they will be back too someday. Fact is that these Sydney olympics should be omitted so many mistakes even before the womens all around and even last month when china had to give back their bronze metal. Look at their current work.
Here are the facts...Russia great routines but they fell 4 times. Romania consistent wins thats how the scoring system works. I agree that when Russia did hit they were underscored. really Produnova with those tumbles pulled a 9.750 thats terrible judging. When push comes to shove Romania were the cleanest. If Russian didn't have some many falls they would have won. They knew this thats why they took off the medals when they got the silver. They made up for it in the Event Finals.

This just shows how great this russian team was! they had four falls from their top girls, and one of them was actually counted. They were still 4 tenths behind the chinese! and they were 6 behind going into that rotation! that means they gained an entire point on china on floor!
I'm glad the Romanians won FAIR AND SQUARE, but I love Sveta more every single time I watch her. It's like she's a magnet, drawing you to her, no matter what she's doing. This coverage was SUCH a breath of fresh, unbiased air after watching NBC do the same event. You might learn a little more with Al and Tim and Elfie, but here you can just relax and enjoy seeing girls you don't usually get to see.
At that point it was also uncertain what would happen to the team gold. Andreea Raducan had been a big part of that gold medal effort and suddenly it was alleged that she would be disqualified because of pseudoephedrin. The girls and the coaches were worried sick. But look at the scores the Romanians got in the previous rounds in floor and beam. They were clearly medal contenders.
Yes, Romania would have been medal contenders, but i agree with yaoryu here, the Russians were underscored and the Romanians' difficulty was not on par with the Russians. The Romanians had easier routines than Russia so they made less errors, it's not that they were better than Russia, they were just playing it safe. Just take a look around here, pretty much everybody agrees that the Russians were superior than Romanians at Sydney, just luck wasn't on their side.
It's amazing how many people are jealous of the Romanians. Instead of praising them for a superb training program and an undisputable history, all they can say is they are overscored. Romania DOMINATED Sydney because they were the best. And they would have done MUCH better in the EF if it wasn't for the shock they were all under as a TEAM. They are a TEAM, unlike the girls from my home country, unfortunately.

Romania got there medal, though the mistakes of others, it was gifted to them, as was the AA gold... Khorkina, Karpenko,
and Zamo were all technically better gymnasts then the Romanians...

I BEG TO DIFFER. Look at Cheng fei's fx at Athens 2004, look at Yang Yinlin's UB, look at Yang Yun's fx, these routines clearly showed elegance and artistry.

I don't think they were weak. They finished first on pre-lims as a team, then first on event final. Shit happens, bad luck maybe ..i don't know, but the were good in Sydney.
zamo and karpenko had a legitimate chance of wining AA gold, but they both stumbled on fx, sveta would have won the AA gold had it not been the mistake on vault that affected her psyche, so there you go, that was how 3 romanians won AA medals cuz the ex-soviet gymnasts paved way for them. romania would not have 3 gymnast on the AA podium at all if not for this
Romanians better than Russians at Sydney your ass! If they were better, then who dominated Event finals? Only 2 romanians even medalled in event finals, Russia won 7. And the Russians were underscored on fx during team final despite having more difficulty and variety than monotonous Romania. The Romanians were OVERSCORED on bars and floors in team final. If the current COP was implemented in Sydney, there was no way Romania would have won any gold at all. Now that's fact. Period!
Witout using your violent language, I would like to mention that the Romanians got the news of the Raducan scandal just before the event finals. They were all distraught. Think of the 16-year old Andreea getting that terrible neews before the beam and floor finals, her strongest events. I'm sure she would've medalled otherwise. It's known that the Romanians hang together as a team, so the other girls were completely demoralized by the news as well.
The Russian falls started when Produnova changed her double front blind vault to a very high Yerchenko. She got injured and continued comepeting injured. Zamo fell on BB and Laboznyuk tried to compensate for that by adding more tricks to her routine to cover for Zamo fall, she fell too. Khorkina tried to perform harder on UB to cover for them, she fell too. They performed very strong on floor but it wasn't enough to save the gold. I consider them the winners of gold though.

todik, if you look at the scores at the worlds 2006 and 2007, and Beijing olympics, with the curreent cop u know that the Russians would have beaten Romania. See worlds 2006 tm qual and tm finals, worlds2007 tm finals Russia only needed 14.000 VT but kramarenko screwed up, and at Beijing had Pavlova not messed up her floor Russia would have won the bronze, see their qualification result, russia was almost 6.00 points ahead of romania. so it was obvious then romania was always overscored

yeah, the Sydney games are utterly panned by all gymnastic followers. The 200 Team competition was a joke. I've NEVER seen SO many routines wrongly over AND underscored... and for no reason.
I'm neither Russian nor Romanian and I believe too that the Romanians were overscored! In fact, they often do! Russia should have definitely got higher scores, especially on floor. All four routines were superb and should have scored in the 9.800 range. Even Anna Tchepeleva's 9.300 was a joke!

I'm glad the new COP that rewards difficulty came into force, look at the result now, Romania not wiining team gold at worlds or Olympics, this is proof that they were always overscored then.

Remember Andreea Raducan also vaulted in the rotation when the apparatus was at the wrong height. Face it, they were better in Sydney!
