Anybody remember Clint as the announcer for the 'Joan Rivers show'? Child's vocal was done by Paul Vance's son, Philip. I guess 'Michael' sang better than 'Philip', right, gang? Hit #2 pop, #7 AC, in Billboard. Only 1 hater. Well, there's 1 in every crowd.
@DaveWollenberg I don't know, but there's a Facebook page called IN MEMORY OF PHILIP VANCE, and a YouTube page entitled A TRIBUTE TO PHILIP VANCE which may give you an answer.
I consider myself one of the coolest guy's to walk the face of this earth. Cool, calm and laid back. That's people describe me. But I have a guilty pleasure. I grew up on this song. Goes all the way back to gradeschool for me and whenever I hear it...lol..man I gots to sing it!..But hey, you guys keep that on the low. Dont want to ruin my rep you know.
The scary thing is, when I was in high school, a friend named Mikey asked if I had a nickel. I quoted this song. He didn't know it, and none of my friends remembered it, and these are people my age. I guess I really AM a music geek. :)
@Timmybear Back then there weren't many radio stations to listen to, but I listened to WABC. This is where I first heard this song. I don't classify myself as a music geek, and I loved this song. It brings back happy memories.
@Gary226 Yes. Go for it. It will be a far, far better thing that you do, than you have ever done. It will be a far, far better place that you go to, than you have ever known.
Well I like the song I wish I was there during that time because during my time candies were $0.25 a piece NOW holy moley candies are now more that a dollar...Sheesh those greedy bastards!
Wow.. what memories this song brings back... My cousin and I did a dance routine to this song for a talent show in school when we were about 9yrs old.. We made up our own routine. had matching outfits... it was awesome. Hearing this song takes me back to that wonderful time in my life.. Oddly enough, when we are little we can't wait to grow up and once we get there we want to be kids again!
@JillnRe ur a retard nd ur a pedophile for thinkin that ur so gay i wish u lose ur dik in an unfortunate smelting accident and burn in hell for ur sik thoughts.
Hey guys, why not stick to comments here about the music and the artists' performance? Plenty of other places to say what you think about the world today - I have my views too. This is a simple yet great song, easy listening and just what is needed for relaxation - but I prefer Ray Conniff's version.
This is just a very simple, easy to listen, beautifully written innocent song, nothing to do with sex or some sick minded maniac as indicated by JillnRe. Just enjoy the bygone era of beautiful quality music we had then and stop the malign. I grew up with this music, I should know. Never heard of pedophiles then.
@nicky196427 If you never heard of pedophiles when you were growing up you must have led an incredibly sheltered life. They have always been around. A man tried to lure my mother into a car for that purpose in 1935 when she was 8 years. A friend when I was growing up was grabbed by a man and drug behind bushes and raped repeatedly at age 9. It's just broadcast now rather than hidden and ignored. That being said, I also think it's just an innocent song and people read wrong meanings into it.

I have been singing the verse My name is Michael.........to my grandkids for a month or so. The 21 1/2 year old wasn't paying any attention to the computer until he heard the verse then looked at me and looked at the computer and stared. It was cute. I change the Michael and say their names. They love it. But My 29 year old daughter-in-law asked where i heard it and couldn't believe it was a real song.......oh, the good old days and the fun music.
@josakis -- She couldn't believe it was a real song. That's funny. Yes, it would certainly be hard for a younger person today to realize that Top 40 music once sounded this good.
Not many people know this, but this is not the original version;this is actually a cover, believe it or not. It was first recorded in 1971 by a singer named Billy Lawrence(don't know anything else about him). The children's part(in B. Lawrence's original) was sung by a children's choir in FRENCH! The chorus went something like" Mama Je'taime.. Mama Je' Taime.." Don't know if the English 'My Name is Michael.." is a translation of the original or not.
I was also about 5yrs old when this came out... I remember hearing this song while riding in a VW bus on our way to the lake... The chorus is all I could remember though... "My name is Michael, I got a nickel, I got a nickel shiny and new" has rolled around in my head every since... It's nice to be able to fill in the rest of the song...
I'm getting married in October to a guy I've known since first grade. I used to play this song on my 45 over and over every day and I know my mother got sick of it. I just send this link to my DJ so I can dedicate the song to my mother at my wedding. The second verse is particularly appropriate. She'll die!
you have just transported me back in time about 35 years ( when did this come out?)...... thanks a lot..... good stuff....... i feel bad for kids today, not sure if they get to experience the purity of life that we did back then.... i hope they do anyway....
No not really. Why ruin a good thing? They don't make songs like this anymore. Most of today's music is nothing but pure junk to make a quick buck. Nice and pure. Such goodness of a bygone era.
I was about 4 or 5 when this song came out. I thought the Brady Bunch was helping the guy sing for some strange reason! LOL But I absolutely loved this song!
Composer Lee Julian Pockriss passed away on November 14th, 2011.
