On this date in 1958 {Feb. 17th} "Sweet Little Sixteen" entered Billboard's Hot Top 100; eventually it would peak at #2 {for 3 weeks} and spent 16 weeks in the Top 100...
Ranked 29th on Billboard's Year-End Hot 100 Singles of 1958 chart
Reached #1 on Billboard's R&B Singles chart...
Was the 2nd of three straight records by Mr. Berry to make Billboard's Top 10; started with "Rock & Roll Music" {#8}, then this one, finally "Johnny B. goode" {#8}...
I had lsitened to this and Surfin USA for years-- it was onlty when I read U -tube comments i realised CB had been ripped off!
Both great, though. Wonder if he sued? The guy who wrote "He's So Fine" succesfully sued George Harrison for " My Sweet Lord" . Harrson claimed he "accidentally ripped it off from the zillions of tunes floating around anybody's head. But most of the Mersey Sound groups did very open covers of Black US hits, and gave them their unique sound.
@Jigaboo123456 yes cb did successfully sue the beach boys. cost the bb some coin. as for my sweet lord the litigation went on so long that the writer and record company went broke. harrison bought the record company and rights to he's so fine and the suit went away
I grew up hearing this music I thought it was seventies music found out later it was fifties music but my brother and I knew all the words to chuck berry songs thanks for posting this
Ooh boy, does Surfin USA by the Beach Boys sound like this one. Brian Wilson really stepped in it when he claimed he wrote it. Poor lad must have been hopped up when he said that. Awkward. =S
@beatlequeen06 it's really simple why this happened ...due to racial differencies...white people just stole the music the black people made...see elvis presley.
@lefiosalex you don't steal music you record it. writers want entertainers to record their songs because that's how they earn a living. lieber and stoller didn't like how elvis recorded "hound dog" but shut up when the money started rolling in. if the song is out there they can record it. for a long time elvis wouldn't record "blue suede shoes". but when carl perkins had a serious car accident elvis finally recorded it and it kept perkins afloat until he recovered
@denisjl100 "lieber and stoller didn't like how elvis recorded "hound dog" but shut up when the money started rolling in" ....That made me laugh. Nothing like a little moolah to ease artistic objections!
