To me, them saying Bob is an irresponsible parent is simply sticking with that old, annoying trope that treats working class parents with disdain. To Bob's son: Unless he's getting high or getting laid, your dad actually has an understandable reason to be away. He's making money to support your bratty ass.

Mmm, it is unfortunate that they didn't further this particular plot element since it kind of irritated me even when I watched it the first time. But like a few other things in the movie, it was a cheap and easy way to infuse the movie with some more content.
