Orbital changed the public perception of Glastonbury. I remember this year on the telly. C4 covered it in a meek, mild manner in the main, and no-one watched. Then Orbital exploded on the scene. Gone were Dodgy, Sleeper, the Charlatans and all that shit. Suddenly music that actually meant something was being played. Within a couple of yrs, Glasto was a massive cultural phenomenon, something to compare with Wimbledon and the Open as summer events. This track was the springboard.
@XFizzxX no happy hardcore was the happy hardcore of the 90s - orbital were nothingto do with happy hardcore - thats blasphemy. Anyway I was at glastonbury this year but I went to see bancode gaia - damn.....
1994 Glastonbury: best Glastonbury. I was at this gig on the tail end of a microdot, was partly glad my feet touched back down on terra firma after the gig ended. Best night of my life to date! Was anyone at this NOT on acid? Who remembers that guy playing coronation street on his trumpet just as the sun was setting before Orbitals set?
I was there and can confirm I wasn't on acid, however I hadn't been to sleep for 5 or 6 days and I think that did the job just as well! I'd forgotten about the trumpet - that's just made me laugh...very happy days ☻
Could not agree more db also rates with me as best night of my life, it was one of those "moments in time" you just had to be there. If i could bottle up the rush i got at( 6.30 )for the next 4 minutes i would be fking billionaire. Absolutly totally mentally insane lol. Oh to have myself a time machine.............
I was there too - still probably the best night of my life. "He's coming up he's coming up, yeah!" Impeccable timing on my behalf. We all swarmed across a packed bridge, Bjork thankfully finishing, this track the highpoint although the next few hours were magical afterwards as well. The feeling (6:30 mins in) when the breakdown came in, the crowd looked around then break into clapping and cheering and we enter meltdown. Raving and raving, still brings a tear to the eye. To be 25 again.
this was the part of the set where everyone really started to come to life and get right into the moment!!! 'me included, and my mate doddsy from peterlee!!!'
The best live gig I have ever seen. Someone had been shot during Bjork's performance right before; everything got a bit weird in the crowd, then Orbital came on and made everything alright again, and 30,000 people became part of the band. This vid (great though it is) really doesn't do it justice. Unbelievable night.
@musicandchips the best live gig I've ever seen too - this clip totally doesn't do that night justice - Orbital were......just immense - this was history
Diversions is my #1 Cd of all time. It is timeless, a perfectly constructed journey. I just really wish I had seen Orbital live. But no matter, they are always close to my heart.
i was there and it was my 30th birthday - seriously it was the best live gig i have ever seen (and i've seen a few). if you can get to Glasto this year you really should check them out
fucking ace what a performance there headlining the other stage at this years glastonbury festival on sunday donno wether to go see them or stevie wonder.
@DarkAndMartyr I ended up watching stevie wonder im going to guilfest in 2 weeks and orbital are headlining that so i thought it was a bit silly to give up the chance to see stevie wonder live just to see orbital live twice. They were meant to have been good though.
saw them at Brixton a couple of weeks ago, and 17 years ago at the Megadog New Year's loonout. Still the greatest electronic act the world has seen or heard. love, love love !!!!!!!!!
15 years? wtf, where did time go...i first heard this on an old Journeys By DJ mixtape, was in the height of my rave vibes at that time, gives me goosybumps listening to it again....big up the Orbital, I seen them live recently at the EH1 Festival in Scotland, which they fkn rocked!!!!!!
I would murder a million kittens to be given a chance to go back in time to see this song, by this band, at this event. The pinnacle of techno, right there.
Those were the days! Pure unadulterated fun - and of course totally free, as it should be (well someone must have bought tickets but I never met any of them!)
Admittedly Glasto 2008 was probably one of the best there's ever been, epecially trash city but there's no way to recreate the sheer chaos party madness that was the mid 90's.
Can't wait to watch them again at Get Loaded in the Park in a few months. It'll be my tenth time seeing them, no other live dance act comes close for me. The first time was this unforgettable night in 1994, where did those 15 years go?!
I remember watching this on telly i think it was the first year channel 4 broadcast a lot of live glastonbury festival footage i was 20 and it made me want to go. Ive been going to glastonbury on and off (95, 2000, 2002, 2008) ever since and im going again this year 8 WEEKS TO GO PEOPLE.
This entire performance changed my life, and i only watched on TV. I can't even begin to imagine the effect it would have had on me if i'd actually been there.
one of my abs faves, got the vinyl or what's left of it, had to buy another copy, never tire of it. Never saw live though, but defo the tune constant in my head.
