Bringing these two together on the Opry Stage is a REAL TREAT!
Connie Smith still sounding great. And for those of you that haven't heard 'Timeless' yet, check it out. One of the few major "country" record label albums that actually is country music.
so many comments on here seem to sense bad feelings between Connie and Martina. I dont see it. Connie is a first class act and a devout Christian. also feel Martina is humbled to sharethe stage with a legend singing her song. Maybe Im wrong but I see nothing more then a fun timeon stage here.
I agree - it looks like Martina is paying homage to one of her idols - I see nothing but respect and talent here .
Believe it or not , I had never known Connie Smith until today and I am old :) My mother always listened to Patsy , Timi Yuro Tammy , etc and that is the " older music" for females that I knew best. What an amazing voice she has - rivals Tammy and Patsy - will be on the lookout for more - better late than never !
@gharms8 Martina is a great singer and she does about as close to country music as any female singing today. It's just hard to sing a song that someone else has made a huge hit and satisfy everyone. I agree that Connie Smith is probably one of the best female country singers that I have ever heard and I have heard a bunch in my 40 years here in this town. They duet well together also...
@coleyman1 I don't think McBride is at all close to good country such as Connie Smith, Ray Price and etc. back in the 50's, 60's, and perhaps 70's. Connie Smith could sing the crappy McBride songs and make them much more enjoyable.

I love Connie, but times have changed and for some reason you have to be 20 something and hot looking before they will put you on the disc. I love to hear Martina sing, but I would pass up a McBride concert to hear Connie sing one song on a street corner somewhere. Martina is good but Connie-WOW!!
Connie in that second verse basically showed Martina no one can sing her song like she can. Connie is a very nice lady, Martina on the other hand not so nice. Martina knows shes a star and she will make it plain to you, she expects you to know she is a star as well. It's a bad thing when a talent you have that you can share with others gives you the big head.

We definitely do hear a fair amount of country-pop and country-rock on the Opry nowadays, but that's because the Opry has always endeavored to showcase a variety of different styles of country music, so as to accomodate different tastes of different generations of country fans. For the most part, the Opry is still dominated by traditional country.

I really do like Connie and Martina as a duo here. This classic, originally by Connie, has stood the test of time and she sounds as good today as she did when she recorded it. Great song writing. . Martina is a terrific singer in her own right. Seeing them both on The Opry is a real treat. We met Connie at the Opry - in the old Ryman Auditorium - and she was so sweet, pretty and friendly. This is the respect that country music has. Connie is a legend. Therefore the fantastic Ms McBride gave way to Ms Smith for the song tag. No other form of music has the respect that country does. No form of music has the color cross over as country. The music is first. But I have to disagree with the CMA. Darius Rucker?????????? Get the f...k real. Why are you attacking Carrie? I'm sure she knows who she is, and Carrie is a great artist. Just because she's contemporary, doesn't mean she isn't a good country artist. She has a phenomenal voice. A classic country song. I love Connie Smith's music, but I don't get the criticism of Martina I've seen in some of these posts. Martina sings wonderfully too, she isn't Connie Smith...she's Martina and she is one of the few country performers today who still sound like country should.
The thing that I respect most about Martina is her devout respect and reverence toward her predecessors in the biz. She has been very vocal about this during interviews. This performance only serves to reinforce and enhance that statement....classy performance all the way.
Martina is hands down probably the best female voice in today's county music, and she cannot hold a candle to Connie...Connie just blows her away, and that is no disrespect to Martina
