Lcpls in infantry usually don't pick up until they have re-enlisted for another 4 years. Think about that, most 0300 junior enlisted are better leaders than Sgts. And the reason we have more dead juniors is because the infantry is composed of mostly juniors, who spend 8 years trying to pick up, not 4.
