It is so glamourous and dramatic. The tune made you feel that your day to day life was important somehow. I seem to remember the serious news was on at 5.35pm. Reporting Scotland (in my case) at 6 and this was afterwards. It was actually a fabulous programme, the like of which we have not seen since. All before this rolling news nonsense as well.
Blimey!! Talk about nostalgia. I used to work in the Nationwide graphics department on the 7th Floor at Lime Grove Studios.
It was my first job out of art school and I stayed in the BBC for 17 years! These tiltles were designed by Julia Stone if I remember correctly. Er... methinks the technology in television graphics has changed a bit since then!
Absolutely brilliant spot - spaceboobies, you are a genius. The bbc big band should have her in court for unpaid royalties. "If you like it then you should've put a ring on it." Ha ha!
After 1977, when they changed the music, NW was braindead patronising lowest-denominator mind conditioning for the mob. The horrible gooey screechy-jazz music from 1977 onwards instantly put the country in the mood to have their minds mushed into marshmallows and all the radical hit in the era's news events taken out of their attention.
NW and Animal Magic both had their musics vandalised at the same time, both equally incomprehensibly. No wonder only their original musics are remembered now.
They've wrecked Breakfast News, wrecked all their other news broadcasts (apart from Newsnight and Question Time - but give it time!) and even wrecked Newsround for kids.
No wonder things like politics aren't taken seriously now!
Yes, you're totally right. In fact, there were two updated themes between 1978-1983, when the programme ended: the first updated theme was a classical/pop theme played by one of the BBC's orchestras, and the second was based on the updated theme, but with rock motifs, and was played on a synthesiser...
Anyone else remember when they "updated" the Match of the Day theme tune? There were nearly riots in the streets as I recall. It was quickly changed back, and has never been messed with since!

Brilliant - so nostalgic! The One Show on BBC1 is successful because it is a modern day interpretation of Nationwide!

No you're not the only one spaceboobies. When listening to Beyonce brings images of Michael Barratt to mind, you know the world's gone mad.
I wonder if she knows?

Yes the BBC are very good at doing that!
They've wrecked Breakfast News, wrecked all their other news broadcasts (apart from Newsnight and Question Time - but give it time!) and even wrecked Newsround for kids.

That might explain why Punk came along, and I remember Michael Barrat dressed up as one on the Goddies

Wasn't there another Nationwide theme tune in the late 70s? An update for the disco-era, just as disco was going out?!
