Don't be too hard on Phil Thornalley. It's well known there weren't any rehearsals before those surprise mid-1983 shows. It was a case of Smith calling him up and going "hey Phil, this is Robert. I'm doing Cure shows again. Do you want to play some bass?"
Phil wasn't familiar with most Cure songs at that point. But he's good and, just like Andy, he's warmly remembered by old Cure fans. In 1984, The Cure were a great live band wiith or without Gallup.
@MickHaines yeah you are probably right, I don't have that much background information but the comment still not meant to be that offensive as it may turned out to be, I am just a huge Simon fan anyways so yeah..
A fan shouting "Do the Hansa" in the beginning! Ha ha. Well, this is an interesting version because of the clarity of sound. But there are some noticeable mistakes. Not only that, I dislike the bass playing over here to be really honest. The bass player is just playing this song for the sake of playing but he doesn't feel the song. Listen to what Simon Gallup plays and compare with this. It's disappointing.
the best "lament", live version i have ever hear is from that year "1983". the cure live at "bath bar", england. you shoud try to get it. one of the best cure gigs ever. they play "a forest" too.
The Cure, they are and always will be brilliant

you really notice how Simon is missed in this performance
he is so good at bass, really underrated in my opinion.
still I love A Forest, but yes there are some significant mistakes... (the intro for example...)
