Kim Jong Il doesn't think he can conquer South Korea or Japan. They're completely aware of their situation. China only support the DPRK because it doesn't want millions of North Korean refugees flooding its borders when the regime collapses.
China probably wouldn't help the North in the case of military action from the US or ROK, but Seoul would be destroyed by Northern artillery if they invaded.

Killing him would be an unnecesary loss of live and political risk.

Kim Jong Il doesn't think he can conquer South Korea or Japan. They're completely aware of their situation. China only support the DPRK because it doesn't want millions of North Korean refugees flooding its borders when the regime collapses.
China probably wouldn't help the North in the case of military action from the US or ROK, but Seoul would be destroyed by Northern artillery if they invaded.

China has embraced most free market principles and democratic principles on its borders wouldn't really matter. With the internet and global communication, a democratic republic on the border doesn't really matter. China already had Hong Kong before 1997 (which still has free speech). Also, China is South Korea's and Japan's biggest trading partner. They have more to gain through cooperation, rather than belligerence.
