  • @GracieBarraMofo GSP, Anderson Silva, John Jones, Frankie Edger, Jose Aldo, and Cain Velasquez would disagree. They all train in it.

  • @beargrylls3 Hickson Gracie is a BB in Aikido, BFD. Im sure before Kano, Jujutsu was the shit, but it didnt evolve and it couldnt stay relevent. Unfortunately the same thing is now happening with Judo. Strict adherence to traditions denies room for growth of an art and leads to very large holes that will eventually be exploited by a new innovation on the same style. JJJ>Judo>BJJ. Read the article on USJF.org about the Comp between JJJ and Judo, although im sure youre familiar with the story.

  • what make me laugh the most are the dumbass comments that get put on here like bjj is just a sport ...or bjj would never work in a street fight...or bjj blah blah blah......

some people have such short or selective memories .....did you all forget the time when bjj or gjj was kicking everyones backside?......taking on challenges from other arts and styles and don't forget the meat heads too.....BEFORE IT ALSO BECAME A SPORT... only the uneducated cannot see it being used in defence or attack

  • @daripd..The oringinal statement that I responded to was someone made referrence to BJJ being "the ultimate" self defense. my responce simply states that no art in of itself is the ultimate self defence. If there was an "ultimate art" then there would be no need for as many arts and systems as there are today now would it? Every system has their good and bad points. Im a HKD BB. And I did not say those arts arent effective? Your comment about J/J is not fact, its an opinion, learn the difference!

  • we learned a very sloppy one like this. However this video helps clarify what we should be doing thanks.

  • so a reap sweep

  • i once took a butterknife to the hand. if only id known any bjj back then. i wouldnt have been stabbed in the chest either

  • It is good for police officers to learn bjj because some of the people they will be trying to arrest an begin to resist may know bjj.

  • Ranges in fighting: projectile range, kicking range, punching range, clinch range, and the ground. The point of BJJ is the smaller guy likely doesn't have KO power so he has to defeat his opponent in supierior ground technique. The person who gives me the most trouble in my class is a 110lbs 15yr old white belt. I'm 24 and 180lbs. To all who ask "what if you get slammed", there's nothing wrong with letting go of the guard. You can also hook a leg to prevent being lifted up. Common sense guys.

  • I have a huge head cold and I can't breathe...but watching these videos always makes me feel better:)

  • and in that time I have yet to see one cop drop on his back into an arm bar. If he uses a choke, he will get sued or fired. Not going to try and use a triangle leg choke so some clown can be close enuff to grab his side arm and use it against him. BJJ has its limits too. Try using it on a guy thats good with a knife. You'll be on the ground all right >>bleeding to death.. This is not a Knock on BJJ. I like doing it myself...but its just a part of the whole package gentlemen. be safe

  • I really want to thank you for talking about this I have alot of friends that are weopen people and they say the same thing. I have to say best to just be nice and not attack people since you really dont know what could happen. I have to say if you are attacked you should understand proper Grappling understanding so you can escape or do what you have to do to be safe and go home for dinner. I had to say that is why I teach and have learned many styles and concepts. Thanks

  • As a cop you know if a subject has a knife you present deadly force and never go in on the guy until the knife is out of reach. Sued for doing a rear naked choke? If you injured someone doing that it's because you held on to long and deserve to get sued. The brain needs blood. I can understand a guillotine which possibly could crush the trachea. If any thing BJJ is awesome for subject control because of learning dominant postiion and positive control which you need for cuffing. Yes I'm biased

  • my statement was in responce to a statement of BJJ being the Ultimate self defense. No art is in by it self. I did also say cross training is the way to go. Speaking from ACTUAL experience of slamming people both on nice cushy mats and hard concrete. I can tell you they dont get up too fast from the concrete. Plus unless youve never been cut with a knife, shank, pencile or other home made weapon that was concealed, you have no idea what your talking about.

  • My bias is based on actual experience. dont let your bias lead you into a narrow minded point of view...that my friend can get you killed. Cop or not

  • having done Martial arts and law enforcement both for 15 yrs has taught me two things. slammng a guy on a soft mat will get up and continue to fight. Slam a guy on concrete 8 out of 10 times they dont get back up. And rolling around on asphalt is no fun either. So I dont agree BJJ by it self is the ultimate defense for the street by any means. Cross training in the only way. like I said before BJJ is just a piece of the puzzle thats good to know. Cops learn it to defend against it.

  • kimura hurts the same to everyone pal

  • only IF you get put into one pal

  • @amerpcewarrior67 touch'e

  • "I dont agree BJJ by it self is the ultimate defense" - is *any* martial art an ultimate defense by itself?

  • @amerpcewarrior67 It might have been 11 months but what are you talking about? BJJ, Judo, Sambo, Japanese Ju Jitsu and Aikido all have tons of stand up techniques that effectively subdue the untrained(in those arts) without adding chokes to the mix. If you want my opinion as a Judo player as far as stand up nastiness without throws Japanese Ju Jitsu is the dirtiest/most effective.

  • @daridp History and the development of Reality Based Self Defense arts would agree that JJJ is arguably the most effective martial art to grace this planet, in terms of combatives. Good form.

  • My previous comments are directed to "hillbillyjeremy" in who's expert opinion BJJ is no good for the street.

  • yeah everyone, get your self defense advice from a guy named "hillbilly jeremy" haha Why is it that a lot these so called Self Defense experts are just moronic rednecks with strip mall TKD dojos? LOL

  • and who the fuck are you? BOSTON!?!? home of the drunken bar fight. as much drinking and fighting you idiots do, I'm surprised you have any brain cells OR teeth left.....

  • home to kenny florian, mark dellagrotte, jorge rivera, joe and dan lauzon, and dan simmler

  • woop-dee-doo... the point i was trying to make was to the FUCKTARD that said BJJ is the most effective self defence art beyond any doubt. BULLSHIT. in a "real world" fight you would not want to be on your back on the ground trying to wrap you legs around an attacker. street fights have NO RULES! BJJ is like other forms of martial arts as they teach you to fight in a controlled environment with rules. maybe if you had common sense, you'd understand that....

  • you don't train bjj and have absolutely no concept of what it is. The BJJ you are talking about is the sport version (which is still very effective). The original BJJ taught by Helio and Carlos Gracie is 100% for self defense purposes and includes striking. You think BJJ is just guard? Get a fucking clue man.

  • thats why with the gracie combative if you get all the way through it your basically able to defeat any one on the street with no bjj experience

  • I have seen similar anti BJJ comments by you on other BJJ pages. Really, sir, there is no need for you to do what you are doing. I suggest you get a life.

Unless you do BJJ, you do not know what we know, and do not know how we would react on the street. Probably escape the situation as you have suggested before and certainly not use a guard unless overpowered and forced onto our backs by a larger agressor. Many of us do other martial arts as well. You wrongly assume guard is all BJJ is.

  • I don't know why you bother coming onto BJJ related pages and criticising the art many of us love. We understand you do not use your back in the street. Ideally, or normally, you do not use your back in sport Jiujitsu either, unless you need to. What alot of people fail to understand is the positional concepts and principles that BJJ teaches, which apply whether standing or grounded, which (if known and used correctly) serve to protect anyone under most circumstances, including the street.

  • Another point I really want to make to you Jeremy is that most people do not train BJJ for the street, we train for the art. Regardless of that, the fact is that most street fights end up on the ground, and as such, whether you have other fighting skills or not, it serves to know what you are doing there, and regardless of what you might think BJJ is the most effective modern martial art for the street, by a long way.

Our ranks are full of police and security, we train armies and special forces.

  • BJJ is terrible for the streets.

  • @bbrett72 Martial art experts do not agree with you -- on a whole, Japanese Jujutsu is the art preferred. POST (Peace Officer Standard Training) employs most law enforcement in the US to be taught PPCT. (Pressure Point Control Tactics) It is 90% Jujutsu - the person who tries to submit me from his back is going to get my finger shoved into his eye-socket. BJJ is hardly palpable self-defense in the holistic sense of the word. My jujutsu instructor (almost BJJ brown belt too) co-signs my argument.

  • @richp860 So essentially while someone has you being choked out in a sankaku jime(Triangle choke)

instead of escaping... you're going to be reaching for his eyeballs?

I'm always skeptical of these grandmaster know it all... pressure point KO victory specialist.

Pressure points are nothing more than icing on the cake... not a way to win a fight. A BJJ guy will be controlling you on the ground... saying "I'm just gonna shove my fingers into his eyes" is much easier said than done.

  • @BlackShinobiShozoku 1) I never said ANYTHING about pressure points. 2) A sankaku jime is technically not the same as a triangle choke because the traditional way of doing sankaku-jime doesn't figure-four the legs. 3) Sinking a triangle choke on somebody is easier said than done, as well. 3) I am a jujutsuka, so you don't have to tell me about being a jujutsuka. The ne waza I practice is TACTICAL and not sport-oriented.. BJJ is great but not nearly 100% self-defense oriented.

  • @richp860

1)Actually yes you did... "(Pressure Point Control Tactics)"

2)A sankaku jime is technically a triangle choke... because in Japanese(if you speak it) Three angles choke (Hence the name Triangle) Because in a figure 4 you can see a triangle formed in the middle. 3)Depends on the person. 4)What Ryu of Jujutsu are you from? And what makes your Newaza so "tactical?"

  • @richp860 And Jujutsuka normally controls by JOINT LOCK... not pressure points. Pressure points don't really work on all people, relying on them will only get you defeated.

  • @richp860 sigh.. fucking trolls

  • Great vid

  • Good technique, but bad audio....is that an air conditioner droning along?

  • Apparently Mir couldn't bear the technique of getting laid on and pounded.

  • So true.

  • he did not out technique him! all he did was lay on mir and pounded him if mir and lesnar were same size and weight mir would win

  • IF they were, maybe. IF is a silly word to use when it comes to excusing one's shortcomings. He beat Mir, and he'd do it again if he has to. You forget that wrestling is technical too. I'm from the UK and even I know that! Lesnar was one of the best at his weight, not to mention his size makes it very easy to implement on Mir, who pales in comparison in that field.

That's way off topic anyway. This is an instructional video of a sweep. No need to make yourself look silly with drivel like that!

  • yes he did he trapped the wrist and pulled it in, taking mir's balance leaving him helpless against the cage, and lesnar used the correct back control to hold him still then tee'd off on his head.

  • i feel like im talking to myself i hate that.....hahah keith is funny

  • is this brazilian jiu jitsu or just normal?

  • brazilian

  • we did this in our class like 2 weeks ago. i liked it. once u get the technique down its easy to pull it off

  • isn't this one of the 50/50 sweeps !??!

  • Nice Keith. Great sweep.

  • 2:27 lol guy in the back isnt paying attention

  • wow thats a great move

  • old skool!

  • Isn't old school da bomb? ;-)

  • @Submissions101 no kidding...and i see this used so much and so effectively...thanks for the post.

  • good one

also thought this is good for no gi and street worthy

  • Nice!!

  • Jiu Jitsu

  • Wow, I remember learning this long ago.

  • This Sweep works well when Opponent steps out of the Tripod Sweep. Great Vid Keith and Ari!!

  • I learned this at my Judo class

  • Eddie Bravo Was There ? I Thouqht I Saw Him.

  • its even easy with out a gi, specially if you havent used the move on the person 100 times already.

  • Jiu Jitsu and street fighting are 2 different things, the only rules you got in a streetfight is your pride so if you got no pride youd kick him in the groin but in a jiu jitsu match groin kicks aint allowed..

  • it's a great move but i think its hard to execute in real live sitution.

  • Yeah, a quick stomp to the groin would cancel out all of this.

  • This is Jiu Jitsu, not street fighting

  • Martial Arts were created for hurting and killing people, don't kid yourself. If you are learning something that can't effectively do one of the things it was created for, why learn the technique? I don't think this would be too effective against someone that was very strong.

  • I'd be effective if you knew what you were doing.

  • if you don't think these techniques work on stronger people, you've probably never trained. if you don't know why it's important to fight for better position (even if the technique doesn't kill someone) you've probably never trained. I weigh 165 pounds and can easily sweep stronger guys who outweigh me by sometimes over fifty pounds. you should try it for a few months, I think the training would change your mind.

  • um...vir the reason people tap out when their in a submission is so that they don't get hurt....

  • if they are strong? its just about balance. long as you can push somones body weight with your legs

  • vir, not trying to sound like i no much but i thought the same thing before i started training in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. I am pretty big and strong with alot of stand up skill. But I was getting man handled by guys 20 lbs lighter than me and guys 20 older than me. Now things are better but it's one of those gotta do it to believe it shit.

  • ur retarded

  • Very wrong sir. aNd you never start off knowing anything about a style, so you MUSt learn something. And look up what martial arts are about before you look any more like a fool...

  • I do not understand you people who come online and bag things you know nothing about. BJJ is the most effective self defence art beyond any doubt. I have seen weak 12 year olds defeat fit, strong, heavy young men, quickly and easily. Over and again. vir123456, BJJ practitioners are so deadly you should be glad most have a better view of life than you do. Most of us do these arts for the sake of learning an art. Not to kill, or maim or hurt.

Start an anti martial arts page rather than post here

  • not knocking BJJ, but if you think this is good for self defence in a real life situation, your wrong. This works fine in MMA in a controlled environment. self defence should focus on engage and escape. for the octagon BJJ works. for real life krav maga

  • I was just gonna say, until i read the end of your comment, Krav and MMA, and strong jiu jitsu are the ultimate street fight magic.

I do all of em, and its a great style. Because Krav fills in the dirty parts

  • U could add some of muay thay. It's very effective too.

  • mmm.. nah, shut the fuck up./

Muay Thai isnt for street fighting. Thats like saying Kick Boxing is street fight magic.

  • Hillbilly jeremy, I agree wholehertedly in the idea of engage and escape. Many BJJ practitioners spent our early years in other standup arts, giving us similar skills to those you aquire in krav. The beauty of BJJ is it gives us the power to deal with somebody angry, who is twice our size and drunk and wanting to hurt us.

With respect, I guess you love your art, but I am tired of seeing adverse comments about BJJ on BJJ related pages. I don't go on krav pages and say "BJJ is better than krav".

  • BJJ is just a part of the over all self defense puzzle. whether you do karate, muay thai,BJJ, Krav. JKD etc, each has its own principles and many times each shares the same principles. they just go about it in different ways to reach the same conclusions. Survival! I dont practice BJJ but I do give credit to the Gracies for showing the value that grappling has always had. They just REOPENED the eyes of the martial arts community. Having a wide knowlege of thngs is better than being narrow minded

  • This cat knows what's up.

  • maybe not in all situations but its helpfull to have a ground game. bjj still has its benifits to real life situations.

  • @bbrett72 Most uninformed comment about BJJ I've ever seen -- ever heard of Tactical Ground Fighting? It isn't a sport, it's ruthless strategy for being on the ground. BJJ is a fun sport, but hardly a self-defense art to be trained in and of itself. I've grappled with smaller BJJ students who thought they could submit me instantly, and I stifled them long enough to prove that I could scoop their eyeballs out while they tried to scissor-sweep me.

  • technique beats strength. Ask any martial artist.

  • not really.... a big strong wrestlers (brock lesnar) will beat most fights with better technique (mir)

  • and yet when they first fought Brock had limited to no technique and got owned by Mir. Your example pretty much demonstrates the importance of tech..

Brock did not get bigger, he got more technical.

  • winged789 is right....

  • um wrestling has technique too. he out techniqued mir in the fight. itts not just brute strenght with lesnar.

  • brock lesner sucks. technique and a good mind set beats strengh any day.

  • Only when it comes to situations like Royce Gracie vs Dan Severn, Hughes vs Hallman or Ortiz vs Mezger 1, back in the days when wrestlers thought they were invincible grapplers without knowledge of submissions.

  • @24miggy24 i agree

but i doubt alot of body builders would agree lol

  • @24miggy24 theres a bell curve when it comes to strength vs technigue. you need twice as much technique to beat someone one and a half times as strong. keep training bro!

  • Comment removed

  • yes please, lift your leg to stop, oh wait you would get swept easier. the reason we drill is so this move can be as quick as a stomp to the groin would be.

  • nah these sweeps are pretty easy ..look at my latest video i do a similar one at the 2:30 mark in a tournement.

  • lets say you use this on a person not wearing a shirt do you grab his wrist?

  • you don'T really want to grab shirt anyway. It's going to tear appart before you can control the guy with it... maybe if it is a think hoodie or something, but still, its not the best thing to do. You grab a Gi when they wear one, but unless you go 300 years ago and move to japan, there is not much chances the guy who attacks you on the street have a gi.

This is what 10th planet system is for! Like

lucubration808 said, there is moves that doesn't work on the street...

  • LOL you NEED not to grab the gi if you have strong hand, just grab his WRIST. and grabbing the gi really help you strengthen your hand

  • Yes, the wrist. Although on the street it would be uncommon to use a guard at all. Risk of damage to your own head and back. On grass maybe.

If you were overpowered by a much heavier person then you might use this sweep. But probably the one he says "you all know", kicking out the hip on the same side as ankle control, and coming behind opposite knee with foot. Is a very effective sweep. However, once opponent falls back, both are in similar position. Thats why you need a grip, 1st up is on top.

  • no problem you can use it on a person not wearing something on there wrist.. grab the leg sweep the other leg kick the hip down and they fall over, you just don't have a counter weight to pull ur self up so just get up fast as he's falling and you'l be up before he knows what happend.

  • the wrist is just good for pulling your self up. you can just get up like a normal person. I've done it a million times with no gi

  • i saw the video...nice sweep man...lol

  • you are correct, but there are 2 main facets to BJJ, moves for self defense and BJJ for use against BJJ/other grapplers this is one of the latter, for use against other grapplers in touneys and such

  • I just got an Ouano gi :)

  • Thanks a bunch Ari! :) I'm definitely going to try that one out. By the way, I also subscribed to the 10th planet website and will be posting videos shortly.

  • Hella sweet sweep!! :D

  • Good Sweep!

  • they are just relaxing chill

  • i think you must come from a traditional base

depends on what class your in, i never do it becuz i think its disrespectful, but i come from a tradiontal base, my japenese instructor does not let anyone lean on the walls at all, i agree it doesnt look good, tho i didnt notice till you said something, maybe you should concentrate on the instruction more

  • This was during a long seminar and everyone was chill. Keith is a great instructor and when he teaches, all his students say 'yes sir' as a sign of respect.

  • @lagook Maybe you should concentrate on noticing things more? The instruction is very basic stuff. Just like posture and clear responses.

  • this is great for mma when there trying to stand up from guard and throw hands you can just use this sweep

  • That's nice. I wonder if there are more videos of sweeps when someone breaks your guard and tries to pass...
