Because for someone with ALS, that really is a big deal. That's probably the first time he's had some real movement outside of his chair since he lost the ability to speak. Not to mention, he's spent his entire life studying space and making advances way ahead of his time, but his physical limitations would, under any other circumstances, prevent him from ever experiencing what he's spent his entire life trying to understand.
