One of the BEST live albums ever! Thanks for letting me attach my video response. It's me and a bunch of other guys that are long-time Rush fans doing a cover version of The Trees. I hope enjoy... and yes, we are not only big Rush fans but complete dorks :) Rock on!
Next to 'Xanadu' which is my favourite, this is a one of a kind, it still beautiful after all these years. I couldn't drum like Neil in a million years, they are beyond talented.
This was Rush in their prime....Alex Lifeson on guitar, Neil Peart on drums, Geddy Lee on bass and vocals....take a good look because it doesn't get better in progressive rock than this...
one thing I love about Rush is that their lyrics are CLEAR, CLEAN, and they create a magnificent and MEMORABLE story with their words, and yet they still sound like REAL ROCK with killer guitar work unlike anything we can call "rock" nowadays. We remember their songs and their lyrics because they're creative. (most lyrics today are about the same crappy things over and over again-romance, sex, violence, drugs, being depressed, etc)
@ 1:47-3:09 only a genius can think of such a non-complicated, stress-melting, beutiful solo. my favorite part, as well as 4:22-4:36- BOTH ARE MY FAVORITE PARTS
These guys are the most amazing musicians of OUR age!
Wyld Stallyons? NO - but RUSH music could indeed align the planets, bring harmony and order to the galaxies and result in the best waterslides ever. No doubt about that...
@alexfattoruso Sometimes they do in concert, sometimes they do montages of different parts of songs that have different rips and chords in them to make it fit together...sometimes they even try switching instruments-Alex on Bass, Geddy on guitar...Neal is a perfectionist though...unless he is doing one of his solos, which he does at many shows, he always plays a song exactly like he did before. He rarely messes up.
I've listened to Rush for, uh, 30 years. They taught me a great deal. But you know what I don't get? How they don't get insanely bored of playing the exact same arrangements, note for note, drum fill for drum fill, solo for solo, for so many years. Just seems to me they'd occasionally want to stretch the tune, change it, move it around, play a different form, different solo, etc.
@alexfattoruso Why ? You can't improve anything - every single note and pause is where it should be, the awesomeness will be ruined with any changes..
There has never been a band more concerned and adept with their musicianship than Rush. Regardless of one's taste in music (and Rush is not for everyone), the technique that these men grant their craft has never been mached.
It's great to see no trolls rolling around this vid or almost any other rush vid out there. Just a bunch of fans talking about a great band. Long live Geddy, Alex, and Neil.
man eye baught the picture disk for this album Hemispheres where a naked man was walking on a huge brain like it was earth.. this is one of my fave tunes..
the moral of the story... man chopped down the maples and oaks.. killed everything
good thing back in the day when this music was running live.. some real power was created... there trouble in the forrest and the animals have fled ...
Why does every rush video have nothing but people talking about the R&R HOF. who gives a shit, HOF is a sham they'd be dishonored to be inducted at this point
Great song. Neil is the greatest drummer & percussionist. You can hear the wood peckers, pecking on the trees. So creative. You feel like you are right there in the woods. I am with you Maples. I'm a Maple my self.
@jim102010 He is in the top 5 somewhere but John Bonnon was the best... way more fluid. it came more naturally to him. Neil really had to work at it to get to where he is.
i know that with today's technology it's more convenient for Neil to have all the percussive instruments he uses digitally as opposed to having the actual live orchestral percussion he used to use during this era, but i found it so much cooler when he was like a rock drummer and orchestral percussionist combined...yet he still manages to maintain the same originality , only in a 21st century form ! that's why he's one of my drumming heroes !
@blica1 Neil is great. The original percussion instruments he had in the early days were so cool. The chimes, bells, gongs all of them. He really stands out as a unique drummer the way he used those many percussion instruments.
It's amazing that three people can make a noise this brillaint. Then you get pop groups with ten members that wouldn't know a good song if it shat on them.
when alex is playing the middle bridge part in 5/8 i don't think i've ever heard a more hypnotic guitar riff in my life from 2:18 to 3:09 and the beginning of his solo....it hooks me in every time from the first time i heard it 20 something years ago.

the greatest progressive rock band of all time...no doubt in my mind...it's a no-brainer..but only if you see the magic...they have done this now for almost 40 years afterall...Alex and Geddy...with neil coming in at 35 years with the band now...no company...no peers...they stand alone...and they still stand...

(Well, me and another couple of thousand people...). As the sleeve notes on the album say:- "A special thank you to the Glaswegian Chorus, for background vovals on Closer To The Heart". Hey, now you can tell your mate's that you know a guy who sang with Rush.. lol
@AxlMidas That's cool!! My Hubby, cousins and myself are on the cover. The picture was taken at the Aladdin Theater for the Performing Arts in Las Vegas. That was my first Rush concert. :)

LOL. No wait, I have a even better idea, why don't you just blow your miserabl brains out with a 12 gauge?
I had been a fan for ages and i remember when i went to see these guys play way back in 1984 in Edinborough cattle market. I was still at school and went with a bunch of mates. Amazing band to watch live. The tour was called 'Grace Under Pressure'. Did anyone reading this also go?
@MrEyebrowz Memory FAIL. Dude, this came out in 1978. It wasn't all "just awesome rock". John Travolta had a number 1 single that year with Olivia Newton-John (The One That I want). The Bee Gees had two number 1s. The Village People sent YMCA to the top of the charts. Shall I go on??
Alex Lifeson has done so much for modern guitar playing, so many of the current popular bands cite him as a major influence. Everyone who counts knows how talented these guys are. Thank you Alex, Geddy and Neil!
I have been watching the live concerts on Direct TV and they are awesome! And then I noticed, Getti Lee looks like an owl. I believe his music are a direct fed lyrical program from beyond this planet. He is one of the first alien/human hybrids! Their lyric and music writing is way beyond his time. Fact: Niel Pert is the best drummer in the wOrLd!

I heard this song many years ago, loved it, but never really listened to the lyrics.
The trouble with the maples,
(And they're quite convinced they're right)
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light.
But the oaks can't help their feelings
If they like the way they're made.
And they wonder why the maples
Can't be happy in their shade".
Good stuff.

LOL. No wait, I have a even better idea, why don't you just blow your miserabl brains out with a 12 gauge?
How's that? Better?
Or does it need more work?
