Joe Henry who sings this song here is brilliant. Great choice of music once again from the crew who makes these awesome "TCM Remembers" collages. I sure can never get enough of Harvey Korman (Mel Brooks' High Anxiety and Blazing Saddles, The Carol Burnett Show to name a few), he made me laugh so heartily, and still does, what a great actor.
This is so well done. Beautiful. It makes my heart ache. The beauty of the world and the fragility of human beings. It makes my heart ache. Beautiful.
I loved how they used Mel Ferrer's beautiful pas de deux with Leslie Caron from "Lili" as tribute. It truly warmed my heart, and it was his finest performance.
I love how TCM's year-end memorials are always beautiful, stand-alone music videos. But of course it's impossible not to watch these and begin to cry midway through. Beautifully done.
I don't know why I chose to start off the new year by watching these tributes. What deaths will 2011 bring? The inevitability of losing people we've grown to love - that's the price one must pay when they are passionate about cinema, the business, and the people in it. No matter how much time passes, it still stings.

@MegaSuperWalrus Very well said. Your opening sentence--I was wondering that, as well. I feel such melancholy looking at this 2008 tribute particularly. Why am I doing this? Some of the faces appearing in this farewell ... of course I knew they were gone and yet I caught my breath, stunned to see them here. With some of them it's not a surprise, you could feel the clock ticking; others were so vital that--age regardless--to say goodbye is a shocking blow.
I still can't get over the passing of Breno Mello and Marpessa Dawn in the same year. it is so fitting, I'm not surprised. Every time I watch the film "Black Orpheus" it always seems to me that both were born to play Orpheus and Eurydice. There's just something about that film and the way the actress and actor played their parts that always makes me think this.
Great song by Joe Henry to accompany a moving tribute to people who brought many of us so much enjoyment! Don't be sad. Rejoice in the fact that you lived during their times!
my god i really appreciate that tcm does these (i do love watching tcm) but goodness it's always so sad to discover who died. it's like reading the obituaries one day and seeing an old friend's name just pop up. :(
Heath Ledger, Vampira (and the spirit of campiness...) Bernie Mac (that was a surprise, first time I heard) Harvey Korman (Blazing Saddles...) and Paul Newman (I remember hearing about his death from my cross country team-that was a "really big" thing-some of the guys were really into Paul Newman.) We lost "so many" good people that year!
I agree wth Massachusetts01. I've seen them all, and I believe TCM Remembers 2006 is the most beautiful, but this one is superb also. Check out 2003 - another keeper.
Sorry to say, I like this TCM Remembers 2008 tribute better than TCM Remembers 2009, but hey my opinion. I hope they add Jennifer Jones in this year's tribute.

To anyone reading this, please answer thoughtfully. I do realize that they are honoring old hollywood actors who died in recent years. But soon they will honor actors from 20-30 yrs ago like Patrick Swayze who died this year 09. They are giving movies made in the 1980's, 1990's and even early 2000's. These films do not belong on this channel as they aren't old enough to be "classics". They need to air old movies and I do mean old as in 50-70 years ago.
But this channel was created for cable TV as the home of the Golden Age of Hollywood Classics. That's roughly from the time they added sound "talkies" to the 50's/early 1960's. Even if there are classics from the 1970's, 1980's and 1990's, those years are not that far back in time to be on the same channel as movies of Clark Gable, Bette Davis, Shirley Temple, Katherine Hepburn, James Stewart, Cary Grant, Joan Crawford, etc. It's just nonsense to give movies of Mel Gibson, John Travolta
very simply, they are still a tv network that needs ratings and i imagine they do better with an ocassional recent film starring tom hanks as opposed to something from the 40s that far fewer people have heard of. not that it makes it right but still
This is so well done. Beautiful. It makes my heart ache. The beauty of the world and the fragility of human beings. It makes my heart ache. Beautiful.
My wonderful Richard[Widmark] was first. That made me happy. He's my favorite, and though so many wonderful actors/tresses (and other film contributors) died last year, I think I miss him the most:(
Heston was jobbed, they clearly moved him away from Newman, because Hollywood was in anti-Heston rampage. Its a shame he won the same amount of Oscars as Newman. Was just as much an activist as Newman. Every Easter/Passover do you watch the Color of Money, no you watch Ben-Hur and the Ten Commandments. To bad people have to put their point into something that doesn't need it Heston, Johnson, Charisse and Newman should have been montage closer together and at the end. :rant off:

I am really very happy to see that TCM included Mr. Forrest J. Ackerman ( Famous Monsters Of Filmland Magazine) and Maila (Vampira) Nurmi in this heart felt tribute..... Excellent ....Thank You so very much ....
Charlton Heston, Cyd Charisse, Paul Scofield, Evelyn Keyes ("Suellen O'Hara"), Mel Ferrer, Heath Ledger, Robert J. Anderson ("little George Bailey" ;-), Joy Page, and Paul Newman . . . so many talents gone :-(

this is the most important video I have ever seen, not so much for those who died in 2008 although some were special to me, but how close it made me feel to those in my life who have died. What a beautiful song! Linda Foley, Colorado
I always prefer the TCM memorial segments to the ones shown at the Oscars. They always chose a great song to accompany the film clips. And they always include the actors that are left out ot the Oscar memorials, due to time contraints, I suppose. Edie Adams, George Carlin, Brad Renfro, Harvey Korman, John Phillip Law and I think Mel Ferrer were all left off the memorial at the Oscars.
These TCM tributes are so much better! I totally agree with you. Everyone raved about this year's Oscars, I thought it was one of the most boring I've ever seen and the Tribute to those who passed was awful...you couldn't even read the names..the camera was so far away---
the leading actors from Orfeu Negro (black Orpheus), Awardwinner 1960, based on the Orpheus & Eurydice-legend, set during Carnaval in Rio de Janeiro, died coincidentally both this year. Breno Mello in july, Marpessa Dawn in september. Gives a beautiful shot in the clip.
Marpessa Dawn died on the 25th of August ('08), according to the article I've read, in France (Paris, I believe)... anyhow... though their passing is chronologically reversed - as far as the mythological story goes - it still struck me as of a seldom if not singular (coincidental though it may be...) symbolism... Orfeu goes, then Eurydice. May they then avoid Hades and rest in peace, both of them...
Does Anyone Remember A Commercial That Was On TCM Where It Showed Several Stars In Various Places Like I Remember Seeing Humphrey Bogart On The Subway Or Something And Jimmy Dean In A Diner And I Think Marilyn As Well Anyone Seen It?
Yeah I know he didn't make the list. I just was noting his death (Pat Hingle). Guys I'm not trying to be morbid, but I'm starting to think we may have to prepare ourselves for bad news on Patrick Swayze soon. He was hospitalized with pnuemonia. He looked bad in that Interview.
CDiane -- This should teach them not to make their "remembering" promos until after the first of the year. Every year two or three people die on or just before New Year's Eve and they have to remake their clipreel. This happened with Van Johnson also -- there are versions circulating with and without him!
Pat Hingle didn't make the list because he passed away on Jan 3 of 2009. He was 3 days late of the deadline for 2008. Maybe they'll remember to remember him next year.
This is a beautiful tribute to our great talent who has gone. We should thank those at TCM for their talent at making this piece. Watch the eyes. Just good.
An obvious explanation for that is that by Dec. 23rd of last year, they had probably already completed the TCM Remembers montage and it was too late to include him. Hence why Betty Grable and several others who died within the last week or 2 aren't included here.
IMO it's a great tribute. Every year the losses are more sadder because so many greats from yesteryear that manage to still be with us all these years suddenly slip away unexpectedly.
Then we have those that died too young.
I love the song for this year "God Only Knows". It hauntingly beautiful. Just like the song for 2007 " Promises".
Darkness settles on the ground Leaves the day stumbling blind Coming to a quiet close And maybe just in time We almost lost the heart to know How to keep our best in mind We almost lost the heart to know How to keep our best in min Time has turned an angry face Throws a dark eye back to sea What will pass for mercy now We practice unforgivingly As if might and will make right Or either one will make us free As if might and will make right Or either one will make us free
Lovers laugh and cross this way Weaving out and into the street It seems we never were so young Or it was never quite so sweet But the world is always beautiful When its seen in full retreat The worst of life is beautiful As it slips away in full retreat God only knows that we can we do No more or less than hell allow God only knows that we mean well God knows that we just dont know how But Ill try to be your light in love And pray that is enough for now
Why don't those of your critiquing the video get a grip? Nitpicking each and every little nuance is so lame. TCM obviously has a particular theme in mind with each vignette and I happen to think they edit it very tastefully. They're creating an atmosphere, not making a slide show. As for mourning and observance, this isn't supposed to substitute for going to these artists' funerals.
The song is pretty awful and the wet tires & clams take up time and distract from the people who are being respected. I'm glad Forest J. Ackerman and other behind the scenes people were included. Did Eartha Kitt die too late? How about Bettie Page? Her influence on style and film is undeniable. : )
The song evokes sadness for the loss we feel for the people we don't know personally, but, who have given us much in their craft. I think you need more time in theaters with the people we morn an now remember.
2003 was good but they used THE most obvious song! Some are better than others (In my opinion 2006 was the best) but we can all agree that even the worst one is better than any Oscars "Tribute".
Take a look at the 2003 TCM Remembers if you want to see how it can be done right. The selection of clips and stills told a story, the people's images were respected and not distorted as many of them are here, the music is lyrical but not a mournful dirge like this piece. 2006 and 2007 are also much better than 2008.
Somehow this year's tribute lacks the narrative and lyrical flourishes of those of previous years, which begs the question: Did the person who used to put them together die?
The haunting song really fits this. Just a moment to remember all those wonderful artists. Also take a moment to think about Betty Page, and actress/model who died recently.
As I watched this, for the first time I truly felt sympathy for the dead or dying. What we create, enjoy, crave, hate, work for or need as an individual goes away. How that moment must feel, when you know. Remember that. I believe you can be happy with you on the way out of this incredible part of a journey that I pray continues.
For that matter, Majel should have been in this clipreel... she made very few movies, but so did Dick Martin and he's there. There's a moment in "The Black Orchid" where she's playing cards with her dad, sitting at a kitchen table, looks up and smiles. I'd have used that.
It doesn't pay to do these too early. We had to yank our 2008 retrospective compilation disc -- kind of an audio greeting card -- and redo it because of Majel Barrett. We should have learned our lesson with James Brown. From now on we don't release a 2008 retrospective until December 31.
This is a very beautiful tribute tothe stars who are gone but are not forgotten..And the song is so beautiful and putting is this beautiful tribute and the pictures are great..Good job TCM and Joe Henry..
I'm going to be the asshole here and say I woke up at 3:36 into this today and hit Mute, because for the second year in a row, TCM did a tribute to people who spent their whole lives trying to bring magic to life, and set it to the single most depressing song they could find. The visuals are stunning, but I don't think these artists would be happy with the awful misery in the song that is "honoring" them.
This is a very effective and poignant video. The combination of the visuals and music make this very artistic. The music is by Joe Henry, Madonna's brother in law. Fantastic music, visuals to match. Whoever directed this should become a director, if he or she is not already.
kinda neat they used Isaac Hayes from "I'm Gonna Git You, Sucka"

Marpessa Dawn died on the 25th of August ('08), according to the article I've read, in France (Paris, I believe)... anyhow... though their passing is chronologically reversed - as far as the mythological story goes - it still struck me as of a seldom if not singular (coincidental though it may be...) symbolism... Orfeu goes, then Eurydice. May they then avoid Hades and rest in peace, both of them...

Don't forget Newman was a talented director as well. They had him listed simply as 'Actor', which doesn't tell the whole story.

John Phillip Law was so beautiful! He should've been a bigger star.

I love how this is put together! Does anyone know what song it was that Joe Henry did about oranges and the line "and then we got married"?
brownaledgirl 3 years ago
Oh wow they actually showed Vampira in their obit!
That is a miracle that they included her.
ILikeCalliopes 3 years ago
Yeah I know he didn't make the list. I just was noting his death (Pat Hingle). Guys I'm not trying to be morbid, but I'm starting to think we may have to prepare ourselves for bad news on Patrick Swayze soon. He was hospitalized with pnuemonia. He looked bad in that Interview.

They left out Majel Barret Rodenberry as wall. The First Lady of Star Trek passed away on Dec 18th of 08'.

CDiane 3 years ago
CDiane -- This should teach them not to make their "remembering" promos until after the first of the year. Every year two or three people die on or just before New Year's Eve and they have to remake their clipreel. This happened with Van Johnson also -- there are versions circulating with and without him!
ksol1460 2 years ago
that douchebag Micheal Eisner is probably laughing his head off now that the great Ollie Johnston has passed away.

Paul Scofield in A Man for all Seasons. Whew. Don't know a better screen performance than that.

Cyd Charisse and Van Johnson were MGM's stars in the 50s. No one spoke about their death.
stormyzanzi 3 years ago
Cyd Charisse is in this memoriam. I think Van passed after this was made. He will be in next year's TCM vignette. I hope.

Richard Widmark RIP. Made my film noir period great. Kiss of Death and the fantastic and overlooked Night and the City.

Absolutely gorgeous and heartbreaking. Newman's and Ledger's deaths were very sad for me the past year. God Bless.

Pat Hingle died :( He was Commissioner Gordan in the first 4 Batman Movies
MIKESOWELL 3 years ago
I know. Remember him from thos Eastwood flicks?
Tabish29 3 years ago
Pat Hingle didn't make the list because he passed away on Jan 3 of 2009. He was 3 days late of the deadline for 2008. Maybe they'll remember to remember him next year.

god... any one else notice how they did Heath's part? "Seems like we were never were so young"
so sad...

Beautiful Tribute. Sadly, some big names passed on in 2008. Makes you wonder what 2009 will
bring...:(

This is a beautiful tribute to our great talent who has gone. We should thank those at TCM for their talent at making this piece. Watch the eyes. Just good.

Blondie331994 3 years ago
Anyone notice Michael Kidd is included? Accord-
ing to IMDB he died LAST year on Dec23rd.
2004mojo 3 years ago
An obvious explanation for that is that by Dec. 23rd of last year, they had probably already completed the TCM Remembers montage and it was too late to include him. Hence why Betty Grable and several others who died within the last week or 2 aren't included here.
whatsherface1015 3 years ago
IMO it's a great tribute. Every year the losses are more sadder because so many greats from yesteryear that manage to still be with us all these years suddenly slip away unexpectedly.
Then we have those that died too young.
I love the song for this year "God Only Knows". It hauntingly beautiful. Just like the song for 2007 " Promises".

does anyone know what movie that Guillaume Depardieu was shown in this? It's french so its kindof hard to find out
porcelainbarbiedoll1 3 years ago
Why don't those of your critiquing the video get a grip? Nitpicking each and every little nuance is so lame. TCM obviously has a particular theme in mind with each vignette and I happen to think they edit it very tastefully. They're creating an atmosphere, not making a slide show. As for mourning and observance, this isn't supposed to substitute for going to these artists' funerals.

DAMN YOU, TCM!!! EVERY...YEAR...YOU GET ME! this time it was when they showed Bernie Mac...when that happened, i lost it... :(
theesch 3 years ago 2
The song is pretty awful and the wet tires & clams take up time and distract from the people who are being respected. I'm glad Forest J. Ackerman and other behind the scenes people were included. Did Eartha Kitt die too late? How about Bettie Page? Her influence on style and film is undeniable. : )
penisyourmajesty 3 years ago
The song evokes sadness for the loss we feel for the people we don't know personally, but, who have given us much in their craft. I think you need more time in theaters with the people we morn an now remember.
synloyVN 2 years ago
2003 was good but they used THE most obvious song! Some are better than others (In my opinion 2006 was the best) but we can all agree that even the worst one is better than any Oscars "Tribute".
MIKESOWELL 3 years ago
Take a look at the 2003 TCM Remembers if you want to see how it can be done right. The selection of clips and stills told a story, the people's images were respected and not distorted as many of them are here, the music is lyrical but not a mournful dirge like this piece. 2006 and 2007 are also much better than 2008.
Bklyn4ever 3 years ago
What do you mean "distorted"?
Torgue15 3 years ago
Some images are imposed over rippling water or clouded with smoke; many images are darkened around the edges. I did not appreciate this effect.

Some big ones gone. Heston and Newman...movies, like music, link us to our personal pasts. We have some big voids.
keendog91 3 years ago
Somehow this year's tribute lacks the narrative and lyrical flourishes of those of previous years, which begs the question: Did the person who used to put them together die?

The haunting song really fits this. Just a moment to remember all those wonderful artists. Also take a moment to think about Betty Page, and actress/model who died recently.
NghtMARE49 3 years ago
As I watched this, for the first time I truly felt sympathy for the dead or dying. What we create, enjoy, crave, hate, work for or need as an individual goes away. How that moment must feel, when you know. Remember that. I believe you can be happy with you on the way out of this incredible part of a journey that I pray continues.
crowpass 3 years ago 3
For that matter, Majel should have been in this clipreel... she made very few movies, but so did Dick Martin and he's there. There's a moment in "The Black Orchid" where she's playing cards with her dad, sitting at a kitchen table, looks up and smiles. I'd have used that.
ksol1460 3 years ago
It doesn't pay to do these too early. We had to yank our 2008 retrospective compilation disc -- kind of an audio greeting card -- and redo it because of Majel Barrett. We should have learned our lesson with James Brown. From now on we don't release a 2008 retrospective until December 31.

I'm going to be the asshole here and say I woke up at 3:36 into this today and hit Mute, because for the second year in a row, TCM did a tribute to people who spent their whole lives trying to bring magic to life, and set it to the single most depressing song they could find. The visuals are stunning, but I don't think these artists would be happy with the awful misery in the song that is "honoring" them.
yacketycat 3 years ago
@yacketycat - That was how I felt about the 2005 one.
ksol1460 2 years ago
This is a very effective and poignant video. The combination of the visuals and music make this very artistic. The music is by Joe Henry, Madonna's brother in law. Fantastic music, visuals to match. Whoever directed this should become a director, if he or she is not already.
