  • Barbara should never do an interview. She has no Broadway experience, the barest knowledge, and her voice just gets on my nerves.

  • I would have LOVED to see Patti as Nellie Forbush!

  • @theatrecr8zy I totally agree. I think bernadette was just as phenomenal (and maybe a little better in my humble opinion)

  • All of the greats have played Mama Rose. :)

  • Never really liked Gypsy. Just a few songs from it.

  • She seems so sweet!! I wish I actually knew her!!!

  • Guys!! U have tto read the Memoir!! Is to die for... outragious funny...

  • I saw Bernadette, Angela years ago in LA I think?, but Patti was unbelievable.

  • I'm Sorry but ... does nobody remember Bernadette Peters as Mama Rose only like 3 years before Patti??? I saw her and she was brilliant!! Don't think Patti ... as much as I love her ... is the end all be all when it comes to Mama Rose

  • seeing her in gypsy was the only time ive ever witnessed a standing alvation before the show was over. and it wasnt just once, it was multiple times

  • I <3 Patti Lupone!!!

  • So much drama! Both Bernadette and Patti are amazing. They are different, but both amazing. As Patti said on her appearance on Will & Grace, "People eaither love me, or they hate me!" I still don't get that. Love her or hate her, but DON'T say she's not talented! I saw her three nights ago, and she blew me away! Her voice is amazingly powerful, and she's funny as HELL as I learned when I saw her on a gay caribbean cruise. i Love Bernadette and I Love Patti. YOU CAN LIKE BOTH PEOPLE! :)

  • dies

  • I watched Oprah today and the creator of Glee compared Lea Michele who plays Rachel on Glee to a young Patti Lupone

  • I would have LOOOVVEEDDD to see Patti as Nellie in South Pacific and Adelaide in Guys and Dolls......Patti recorded some South Pacicf songs on an album but she never did Guys and Dolls.....

  • Yall Suck.....Patti Is amazing.....as an actor you have to do what you feel.....Only Patti could fill the shoes of Mermann. Peters is amazing also!!!

  • i need to marry this woman lol

  • i sang this for an audition... and its hard to listen to patti LuPone do it... becuz i thought i did good, then i heard this.....

  • thats the story of my life lol

  • amazing!

  • God...Ethel, Bette, Bernadette, Patti. What a legendary group of women.

The beautiful thing is that every time someone performs this role, the world says that it can never be duplicated. But somehow, a new incredible female performer comes along and knocks Mama Rose out of the park.

I can't wait to see the next Broadway diva to rock this role!

  • dont forget angela launsbury

  • @NastroDramatica Angela is my favorite actress of all time, I saw Patti in gypsy though, abd she was incredible. I believe both of them are the best Mama Rose's of all time. Bernadette was great too.

  • I love Patti Lupone so much lol

  • You too mother fxcker.

  • ...She's Italian, not Jewish...

  • all Breathe, no Spirit..just loud, loud, loud!

  • she won the Tony right???

  • yep :D

  • Gosh I love her! She is my idol!

  • Bette Midler was the worst!

  • Yes, she is.

  • This is great, but i still love Bette Midler as Mama rose! :)

  • it's my personal belief that Gypsy shouldn't be done again unless Patti plays Rose...her performance can't be duplicated

  • @lostONstage710 Of course it'll be done again. It's one of the greatest musicals ever written. Don't get me wrong, I love Patti and she was incredible as Rose (she's my 2nd favorite Rose), but I can guarantee there are other actresses out there who could deliver alternately powerhouse performances. I just don't know who though. It'll be interesting, though, since I'm sure Laurents won't be involved with the next production...

  • im not for broadway going off,

im for patti lupone being better than bernie (:

  • Unfortunately, Bernadette was in the wrong role at the wrong time. LuPone is performing the 'Mother Courage' performance of her career. Love her or hate her, the performance is breathtaking. It just HAS to be preserved.

  • Okay, for starters Bernadette Peters production of Gypsy was NOT a commercial or critical flop! Bernadette's production ran 1 year and I month, Patti's will run a little under a year. If Patti's was more successful, it would not be closing a month sooner than Bern's did. Plus, Bern got rave reviews from USA Today, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Playbill, the list goes on and on. She got a standing ovation at the Tonys just like Patti did AND her Gypsy cast recording won a Grammy.

  • retard, its closing because of the economy.

    Bernadette SUCKS.

  • midget- I agree, Bernadette as ROSE?? I DONT THINK SO, that was ridiculous, Pattie is good, but theatres DONT HAVE TO CLOSE, they will have to hire raw talent in America to keep it open, those theatres in NY are PAID for 10x over- Greed should not be a part of the Broadway scene. I would be happy if they got raw gifted/ and talented people. It is refreshing to hear a NO NAME that is great than a Bernadette that CANT SING.

  • they catnt afford to keep it open, and its patti not pattie, and she was like a zillion times better than bernie, and thats what its closing is the economy, get your facts straight buddy.

  • UNTRUTH. They NEED to get FRESH REAL talent. They CAN make it- I LIVE HERE. They pay WAY too much for NAMES. There is PLENTY of talen out there. The theatres were paid for LONG ago, and have been here for DECADES.

  • fresh talent is patti.

    shut your mouth,

    IGNORANCE IS BLISS (:

  • So, you are FOR the closing DOWN of Broadway?? that in essense is what you are saying.

  • Comment removed

  • @AtLastOnTheGround i must know...did you see the show?

  • @thomas14630

I didn't see her live in the role, but I've seen enough and heard enough to know that I do not like what she did with the character. I like to see actors playing human beings, not playing cartoons.

  • @AtLastOnTheGround You're insane--Lupone is RIVETING in person. I saw Gypsy with Bernadette Peters and Tyne Daly live, and while they were both great they didnt have the kind of fire Lupone has. If you havent seen this live you haven't seen it--the videos just don't do justice to how she can fill an entire stage.

  • @AtLastOnTheGround I respectfully disagree. I feel that her BIG acting fits perfect for such a BIG character. Mama Rose and Eva Peron required that energy. I was not a huge fan of her Lovett but that was because I was not a fan of that production. Her Norma and Fantine were subtle though. She can do either- she just understands that this character needs that big hammy personality. In my opinion at least.

  • Hey all, if ur a die hard patti lupone fan, facebook has a group for a petition to get this show on pbs great performances. if ur on facebook join it! :)

  • haha Barbra walters, "Mama Wose".

  • That was a little boring... and i LOVE patti!!! i felt she just wasnt taking any risks??

  • your moms a old heffer.

  • Yes, she is, whats your point? I have my freedom to like and dislike singers- I didnt say that Patti was bad, I have seen BETTER is all.

  • She starting to pronounce the consonants. I saw her live in 'Matters of the Heart'. She is an amazing vocalist. She filled the theater with 'Being Alive'. She's not the best with connecting with the audience but man oh man, that voice. Genius.

  • I saw this yesterday, Patti was beyond words!

  • i love that note on "Try" that "I" was a little sharp and the "try" was a little flat to me. ordinarily that wouldnt be good but it sounds so great here.

  • i absolutly love patti, love love love love her, but idk this preformance seems kinda rushed?

her best is the tony awards no dout though!

  • I just watched a video of Liza Minnelli performing this song in turbo speed. If you want fast, check it out!

  • she is god :}

  • Wow. What a voice!

  • I love how Patti slightly unnerves Joy when she leans into her and bellows "She thought I could be in the same show for NINETY FIVE YEARS..."

  • Haha! That is really funny.

  • the queen of broadway

  • The best rose of all time, ever and forever.

  • I have seen many versions of this musical..ie. broadway, community, school theatres. The last time on broadway starred Tyne Daley as Momma Rose. I am such a big fan of Patti LuPone's. Can't wait to see it! She's truly amazing!!!

  • Loved her when she did Sweeney Todd in Concert as Mrs Lovett and i loved her in Gypsy (just saw it play) absolutely

    amazing

  • I swear to god she was born for this role!

  • She's brilliant. I saw the show later in June w/ Patti, and it was phenomial! I've seen a lot of broadway shows, but I have to say Patti's performance in Gypsy will stick with me for a while.

  • I saw Gypsy two days ago and she signed my playbill let me tell you the whole thing was truely orgasmic

  • um... I have seen Gypsy with Patti four times... It's the most brilliant thing I've ever seen. If you don't agree, you're truly foolish and you're probably some middle class idiot sitting at home in middle America wishing you could come to the 'big apple.' As a Manhattanite who grew up with theatre, I have to say this is the most brilliant performance I've seen in my life. Anyone who disagrees is uneducated, or just has horrible taste!

    <3 Pat

  • you tell em Pat!!!

  • Amen.

Going soon to see Patti for the second time. I think I can say that seeing Patti Lupone perform "Roses Turn" was the single most incredible thing I have ever seen on a live stage.

Never mind the rest of the show.

  • Patti LuPone is like Jesus, but cool!

    <3 Pat

  • I didnt realize spring awakening was a play... i dont like spring awakening much anyway so i didnt do much research on the topic.

Gotta love patti keep your two tonys shined up niceley

  • omg my goodness she is awesome. and a great singer! i loved how she performed this song

  • I have to disagree.

im a HUGE patti fan. shes amazing.

i dont understand how this version could

be bad ? its truely amazing.

  • Sorriee !

^^ that last message was from me,

    i was on a diff. acc. :D

  • wow. to judge someone's rendition of a song out of the context of the show and at a stationary mic stand, is just foolish. have you seen her gypsy? if not you cannot call this the worst professional rendition of this song.

  • Patti Lupone is AMAZING!!!!!!!

  • she's amazing. period.

  • i love her!!

  • Foe Museleaders, who are the other two in your top three?

  • Sorry I didn't respond lol, I eventually gave up ranking them I love them all, but my MOST favorite is Angela Lansbury I am an actor and she is my god and inspiration, but I love others like: Betty Buckley, Bernadette Peters, Jennifer Holliday, Julie Andrews, Judy Garland, Idina Menzel, Kristin Chenoweth, and others, AHHHH i'm seeing her tomarrow!!!!! AHHHHHH!!!!!

  • I just learned I am going to see Gypsy on Broadway with Patti in it i was freaking out b/c i fucking luv patti, she is in my top 3 favorite broadway actresses in the world! i am so physiced! I luv gypsy and i luv patti, its a dream come true, really

  • it's taken me quite awhile to get on the patti bandwagon, but now i'm definitely there! she's freakin' incredible. there are no more words!

  • i agree with barbra, she is just gweat!

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

  • Yay! I can't believe I see this Wednesday!!!!!!!!!

  • She's PURE amazing talent, i can't believe it sometimes! I totally get chills when i hear her!

  • oh Whoopie, it was written in 1891 and performed first in 1906... i forgive you.

  • she said she is the oldest actress to play mama rose. But she's not older than bernadette peters was in 2003 is she?

  • bernadettes like a year older than patti... so patti is older now than bernadette was then

  • WHY is she so brilliant? i almost can't stand watching her because she radiates genius too brightly.

  • Hooray for Patti LuPone for winning the Tony

for Gyspy. No one deserved the Tony more than Ms. LuPone.

  • SO TRUE! at first i wanted kerry butler to win, but after i heard patti was nominated, i reconsidered

  • i don't mean to sound like an ass or make whoopi look bad 'cause i love her dearly. but just for the knowledge of the public, spring awakening was actually written in 1892.

  • i appreciate this comment. so many people who claim themselves "broadway geeks" think that the musical came first and there is no play. these are fangirls.

however, i appreciate those who pay attention to plays, and things less popular than musicals.

so thank you, pigwiz9. if more people payed attention to details such as you, i'd have more hair

  • I second this comment! Every time someone tries to tell me that Spring Awakening is "revolutionary" I tell them that that revolution ended over a hundred years ago.

  • Patti is beyond amazing. She was fabulous in Gyspy. I had chills the entire time. And "Some People" happens to be my favorite song. I love when she sings, "Goodbye, to blueberry pie.", my favorite line in the show. And she had a nice outfit on. Snaps for Patti for FINALLY hiring a good stylist ! Not that it matters. With talent like that, she could wear a trash bag and still be the most amazing person in the room.

  • i love the blueberry pie line too... and THANK GOD she actually looked regal and sophisticated and fabulous. I was afraid she'd show up in something too revealing or another damn tuxedo.

  • i love the last note

  • The placement of goodBYE to blueberry PIE! WOW! And the surpise ending! NICE!

  • I was thinking the same thing!

  • *sigh*, patti is everything that's good in the world :)

  • She looks fabulous here, and sounds great, especially before Noon! I hope the show runs past the summer...the box office figures have been pretty bleak lately, the show has only been playing to a little more than 60 percent capacity weekly.

  • I went on like a tuesday night and it was PACKED, well at least all the expensive seats were packed, the cheap seats may not have been as full.

  • Thanks, digger316. I am glad the extra publicity, TKTS, the current Playbill discount offer (Tues-Thurs performances) are helping to fill the theatre. Big Tony wins tonight would surely be a big boost.

  • This is my favorite song in the show. And i think that most everyhting improved from city center to broadway. PAtti in t he revival (as shown here) controls her vibrating voice more so we can understand her better. She's just great!

  • Absolute perfection! thanks for posting!

    Go see her!

  • Thanks SO much for posting this - I was kicking myself for not setting my VCR!! Go see "Gypsy" - its AMAZING!!!

  • She is amazing

  • brillant. thanks for posting this!

  • much much thanks

she looks/sounds amazing!! I was missing the bowl cut, but she looks just divine here :)

  • Thanks so much!

  • Thanks for posting!!
