I have quite a lot of Indian music & dancing from UK television of the 1980s & 90s which would never be seen again if I didn't share them here on youtube.
I've seen this at least 50 times. I'm in absolute awe! The whole ensemble is phenomenal.
Can't believe I didn't mention this earlier. My sincere thanks to you for uploading gems like this. A collection like yours is a feat in itself, you are generous enough to take the trouble to share.
A reliable source, a set of programmes for Indian TV, which I've not managed to get hold of yet, explains Padma-ji's efforts to uncover the meanings of the Karanas or dance positions in both Chidambaram & Thanjavur Temples in Tamil Nadu, South India.
She explains how she feels certain Karanas actually FOLLOW on from each other in a sequence so producing a dance unit or ADAVU kind of movement.
Very interesting POV.The authorities, however, felt she couldn't call her style Bharata NATYAM as her ideas would conflict with known tradition but decided NRTYAM was acceptable.
If anyone knows if or where this set of programmes is available from, please tell us all as they were very interesting viewing. From about 10 years ago.
I remember the vocalist Smt. Saroja Natarajan who would sing with such bhaavam (intense) and the mridangist (if I am not wrong) Vidwan Bhavani Shankar-a splendid player. Thanks Nick- it brought back some good memories
Loved it

What style is this? I want to say Vazhuvoor but i'm not confident
Guyanazown 2 years ago
Possibly but I might venture to say, due to its strength & clean lines, Pandanallur or a student of Kalakshetra has taught Nirupa.

This is Nirupama Rajendra. Her teacher was the late Guru Narmada, who is a student of the legendary Guru Kittappa Pillai of Thanjavur bhaani (style).

You are right, Nick. It is Pandanallur style. I was fortunate to learn under Guru Narmada during the 90s.

I've seen Tanjore style & it's never had, as far as I know, THIS kind of precision or such perfected lines. No wish to offend anyone.

She has uploaded some of her latest videos on You Tube. The user name is RajuNiru. Her style has changed considerably, though.

Some of her videos you saw were in the style of Padma Subramanyam ji, B. Nrittyam as against B.Natyam hence the difference I believe.
