I did some more digging and found that he has no formal education in science. Having a degree doesn't make you king and not having one doesn't mean you can't know this stuff, but it certainly doesn't help. He also worked with Gene Rodenberry, I think. So, I tend to see Hoagland as an entertainer than anything else. He talks about fascinating things, but sometimes we believe what we want to believe. He has presented some calculations of things and those are useless without being able to test it.

@Barnekkid: Which images of the Cydonian Head are you looking at; the original, unmodified images (which can be found on NASA's website if you dig for them), or at the public release image, which NASA admit is doctored? The Cydonian Head is just the largest and most well known anomalous object on Mars; there are hundreds of them, including petrified tree-trunks, masonry and apparent statues. Then there's the NASA shots of blue sky and clouds on Mars.
