Something better than 13C at Idle? Thats 55 degrees F. Sure there are other coolers that cool more than that at idle, like liquid nitrogen and the sorts. :P
You have it horizontally, anyone know if I can set this up vertically? The base is square so I would think it's possible, or do i HAVE to put it on like that?
Yes you do need the backplate. Not only is this thing huge, it's fairly heavy in respect to the average weight of a cpu cooler. Stock Intel do not use a back plate, instead they use push pins (yuck). Take them off by twisting them (one-quarter turn) counter-clockwise.
These things are the second best heatsink on the market right now. If he wasn't a dumbass NCIX paid employee and used the proper thermal paste, cleaned the CPU and HSF correctly, lapped the CPU and HSF, and made sure to apply the thermal paste in the right way it would be a lot lower.
I would think so. I mean I have a dual core AMD overclocked from 2.7ghz to 3.1 and get better load and idle temps from a cooler that cost around $20. One thing though, I didn't lap either my die or the heatsink base.
I don't really think it would "rip it in 1/2" as that was an exaggeration. Looking at where it's mounted, near the top of the board when it's vertical, it would put very little stress on the board. It's weight over time could pull and slowly damage the board, but that's what the back plate is for. Over all, it looks bad, but isn't really that heavy since the block is mostly hollow. It looks like it's 5 lbs, but is 1.75. Heavy, but not undoable.
NCIX should have a tech tip on how to have a boxing day sale and keep the servers up. well maybe not. you guys owe me 2 hours and a cheap galaxy 8800GT :D
Watercooling > just about ALL air cooling, it's the fact that watercooling is more expensive, and complicated, that keeps air the mainstream cooling solution.
And yes, there ARE better air cooling systems than this.
well not every water cooling > air cooling. You should look at benchmarks. Only the 300-400 custom water kits are better but for the price of this product, its a steal.
Frankly, those massive things scare me. I am in constant fear my motherboard is going to crack in half! I'd love to go water cooling, but than I am in constant fear something will leak and fry my computer!
It's amazing how this channel changed since two years... good job Linus and camera man!

For being so ugly and fucking huge..and only delivers 13c at idle..I am not impressed..a lot of other solutions:P

Hardly. I can name 5 coolers off the top of my head that outperform it. (And by quite a large margin too)
1. Prolimatech Megahalems
2. Thermalright IFX-14
3. Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme
4. Scythe Mugen 2
5. Thermolab Baram

As some of the other comments are saying you could get a lot lower temps with this beast :) My stock AMD cooler gets lower temps on a quad core :)
Use some arctic silver 5, ensure its secured properly etc.
Great vid!

Quite a bit larger? This thing dwarfs 90% of the heat sinks out there.
Also the 798g is NOT including the fan. I would highly advise you keep your PC on its side or take some string to support some of the weight.
Also lap the HS you will get 5-6c drops in temps...lap your chip and you will see 3-4c more.
I got 10c drop after lapping both my Q6600 @ 3.6ghz and the TT120.

did you NEED the backplate installed? will the stock intel one work?
If so, how do you take off the stock one
markeyboy9944 2 years ago
They are all screwed in or held in place by pushpins.

Gosh, is this about who's got the biggest heatsink?? you'd need to place a support stick under it to not get your mobo bended

Dude it wont, the tuniq tower looks like it weighs a ton, but its extremely light for how large it is.

you could get a support beam of some kind to hold the top of it if it looks like its going to be that much of a problem.
