Diabetoboy, you seem to have a good sense of humour, which I think is pretty awesome. I don't have diabetes, but I knew a boy in undergrad who did, and he always said, "I always make sure to wear a condom when I have sex with a girl, because I already have Type One diabetes, and I don't want to get gestational diabetes too." It's not quite as funny as your "four feet of tubing in your pants" joke, but I thought I'd share it anyway.
After 30 years as a Type 1, I can assuredly state that diabetes is indeed as bad as this video portrays. I've never seen anything that even comes close to its accuracy of the moment by moment struggle that a type 1 faces... and trust me, needles are the least of our worries. Morbid? Hardly... he barely even scratched the surface of our likely complications.
Many thanks to my diabetic comrade for his transparency and honesty. Keep fighting the good fight my friend. You're not alone.
I was diagnosed type 1 less than 48 hours ago. I think this video is very well made, but I sure hope living with diabetes isn't too bad. Right now I am really struggling with all the needles! I am so scared of needles! :(
Omg diabetes is not that bad i've had it for 8 years and trust me there are much worst things. Oh and btw if you die from diabetes ur not taking care of it and u only go into commas if you BG is high for like 3 weeks and it never goes down or if u r supper low and you dont treat it.
That was pretty dramatic. I think it's important to share that diabetes isn't so morbid. People with diabetes live normal lives everyday and live healthy, full lives at that! Yes, the routine can get tiresome but it all comes down to how you deal with it. You can choose to give in and let it take over your life, or have a positive attitude and manage it the best ways possible. *I would argue that this video does not represent the majority of people with diabetes.
People deal with diabetes in diff. ways. Just a couple of concerns here: (1) When u are low, u have to eat, but food (or drinks) that will help you stabilize your blood glucose (BG). (2) When you are high you can exercise to lower ur BG, but if you are over 250, exercising can be dangerous.
Otherwise, THX for taking the time to do this! I invite you and all other diabetics here to join a Social Network for Diabetics at Tudiabetes dot com.
Oh, give the guy a break! If he's feeling down because having Type I diabetes SUCKS and making a video helps him deal with the frustration then what's the problem? If you don't like it, go watch someone else's video.
Thought it was depressing too, but my gf sat beside me crying cuz her mom's life was like that for 39 years. I think this guy is just trying to say it sucks sometimes. Hell, if I had to do that crap to myself everyday I might be whining from time to time too. Dang.
ok, this sounds alittle too bitchy. I've had diabetes since i was three, and now im 18. I dont even have memory of what life is like without diabetes. I suggest you count your blessings and stop bitching.
Oh get over it. This video portrays much whining as far as I can tell, and yet again a plea for sympathy. I know kids that are 3 and 4 that have diabetes and they don't even flinch when it comes to glucose testing or insulin shots. Oh yeah, I'm still laughing about the edge of life and death comment by duisburgbunny.
I didn't see him flinch at all. My gf's mom didn't flinch at shots either before she died of the disease last year - coma from too little insulin. Too much insulin or not enough can KILL you. Laugh all you want if you want to show your ignorance. Can't believe you don't know about your own disease, "insulin addict"
well, alot of things can KILL you, like being shot for being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Its not like diabetics have to worry about dying every second of the day, well, at least not from the disease.
I'm a type 1 and totally understand this. Most days I'm fine, but sometimes it all comes crashing down on me, too. And yes, living right on the edge of life & death is an inescapable part of insulin-dependent D, whether we like to acknowledge that fact or not. Loved the "4 feet of tubing in my pants" comment, LOL. I started pumping with a MM715, so had never heard the "clicks" on the 508. Thanks
Dbny is totally right! U need to EDUCATE yourself, man! This isn't type 2. My gf's T1 mother ran out of insulin & was in a coma then DEAD in less thn 48hrs & they can also DIE from sudden low bloodsugars. They have to carry sugar & insulin with them at all times. I might not be diabetic, but at least I'm not ignorant. It is life & death & that's the facts.
I'm a new diabetic and I don't see the disease to be as bad as this at all. Yeah it can get annoying, but only because i have to go to the toilet to inject before i eat in a restaurant. And you talk about diet as if it's a bad thing. The guidelines are to eat a healthy balanced diet, just like everyone else in the world. Ok so we have to be a bit more strict but so what!
This is a poor representation of what diabetes is, I've been a diabetic for 8 years now, and it really isn't that bad. Yeah it is a pain, but to me this video is just a plea for sympathy. Many people have this disease including small children and they don't seem to whine as much as you portray in this video so just suck it up.
okay i would just like to say, i am a type one diabetic and have lived with it for 9 years now, my life is not controled by my diabetes, not at all, i lived a normal childhood with my diabetes, i think your video is very pessimistic, and offers little comfort to those just diagnosed.
I'm not offering comfort to the freshly diagnosed, Alan. Many of those that have had it for a bit can identify with the struggle though. If you can't, then kudos to you. When an unwelcome guest like diabetes comes and changes what is normal for you, pessimism is almost inevitable. Hence the fact that 2/3 of diabetics go through depression at some point.
okay, point taken, but you know its getting easier to control with the advent of insulin pumps, and the "bionic" pump, able to monitor sugars and correct sugars on its own, which is due out in the next couple of years, and also stem cell research could bypass the need for external insulin all together
Wow! What a great film of your experience! My girlfriend goes through this and is just as disgusted as you obviously are with diabetes' demands on one's life. This really helps me with perspective!

I appreciate that. I like the gestational joke. I enjoy throwing that 4 ft of tubing line out in random conversations.

Hey, this video may be a bit morbid in it's view, but this is the best video I've seen that portrays what we go throguh every day.
Daiabetes might not be as bad as this video makes it seems, but it's an artistic style.

I forgot how annoying the alarms were on that pump. don't miss the soft sets either! Interesting perspective!

What a depressing reel. Seriously, I think you're letting yourself be beaten down by it! Grab it by the balls, and stop being so morbid!
I didn't think it was at all insipriing, when it easily could've been.
