  • Someone explain the rules to me!

  • Can't help but feel very board watching this. I guess I've been spoiled by all the European sword fighting I've seen, and I mean the actual stuff done with correct historical techniques, not the hack and slash crap Hollywood has made people think it is. Proper European swordsmanship blows this away but doesn't get nearly the amount of respect it deserves from most people.

  • @EvidensInsania What European swordsmanship are you referring too? There are many different types.

  • 1:11

I think he had a seizure and tried to play it off.

  • I wish they had commentary so i knew what was happening

  • Persona 3 brought me here.

  • Intense..

  • Jesus... that was a tense match to watch.

  • ive been very misled from watching so much anime i expected an intense show down

  • I imagine lightsaber sounds as I watch this

  • @ TheRacistsMustDie It's call kiai. It's a sort of 'battle cry', a manifestation of the fighting spirit. It's very common in Kendo, in fact, it's one of the very first things they'll teach you.

  • May I ask what they are screaming, or does it have no real meaning?

  • im just finding out about kendo; how are these judged? like fencing?

  • *Luke, I am your Father*

    *Nooooo*

what they're saying at the end

  • aww . . . anime and manga's make it look more intense :(

  • @tsukiomilover yeah, well anime and manga characters don't have your typical human fears and natural reactions to having a wooden stick (or bamboo) pointed at you, it's wielder determined to strike you.

  • @tsukiomilover yah sport fighting takes the nature out of it n it comes down to more of people flourishing their techniques at eachother rather than the reality of oh fuck my body is tired n failing principal of go or die. simply put their recieving perceived information and making reactions based soley upon time honored traditions of how to handle the situation within the frame of their own body and blood work completely oblivious to the principal of nature. people play games until theyre tired

  • i wanna buy the shinai for kendo and the weapon for kenjutsu .. but where do i buy those????

  • whats the weight of the shinai ?

  • @poissonmoodi

Regulations: over 510g (some player use more heavy weight)

  • Fuck Fencing. This is way more badass.

  • @jfoley715 yea fencing is boring 2 watch compared to this

  • @xbimpyx

    No it isn't...

  • @Dimitri0809 my opinion. i watched videos of pro fencing. it was boring. theres more action here. but my opoin, u like fencing more thats cool.. i like this more

  • Play "Warriors Suite" from Rurouni Kenshin over this video. Epic.

  • @Skywalkermesonman

    IT IS EPIC!

  • prefer kenshin]

  • I feel ashamed....I actually watched bamboo blade and now im watching Kendo....omg....

  • @haloman123123 I DON'T feel ashamed - and I got here after watching porn!

  • wow what a transition. From polishing your wood to watching two guys beat each other with theirs LOL

  • @mrdefkon1 gotta love the internet

  • @haloman123123 Same here. It's more like I'm reading Bamboo Blade then landed myself here. Haha. Doesn't look as intimidating as what the manga makes it out to be. More calm and collected. Yes, the true path to becoming a jedi warrior. Lol.

@ SakuyaFM So it's quite rare to get points I'm assuming?

  • How is this scored? Sorry kinda new to this.

  • @NRFpwnage Head strikes, wrist strikes, throat strikes, and body strikes each gain a point. The judges will call if it's "powerful" enough. Weak, sloppy strikes usually don't get counted. You need 2 points to win, but you are also timed so there could be draws.

  • why is the announcer guy screaming at 1:01 he sound like a chicken

  • why is the announcer guy screaming

  • holy shit however i look it seems every duel last like 2-3 swing, then thats it. It seems that parrying isnt even efficient a bit in a real swordfight. and they all swing in what seems a complete disorder. I knew it couldn't be as kickass as in the movies, but yet... I wasnt expecting something as dis-gracious!... so deceiving... i'm so decieved

  • @jwul28 Only at about 6:21 this gets exciting. Anything earlier was... uneventful so to speak.

  • I really like this Sport but in Germany are Not many dojos to learn AND Train this ;-(

  • Fuck srsly stop talking about anime. You people are making people who watch anime look stupid as hell. and yeah i watched bamboo blade but srsly dont talk about it here =.= even if it brought you here Japan is not anime

  • They are shouting because that's how the rules are. You must shout "head" in Japan (which is pronounced as "MEN"), if you're striking the head.

And the shout is also used to absorb the opponents morale and boost your own.

  • Do they ever use hardwood oak bokkens in competition kendo? or is it always the bamboo swords?

and reading down in my style of karate kiais are used to produce more power during techniques and to scare opponents during finishing moves

  • @Carell117 only while doing kata forms, the bokken is never used to strike anything, both for the saftey of the target and the bokken

  • what do they say while shouting ? Get the fuck off maybe ?

  • @utubewantsmeregister They shout either giberish "GRAWR" or a target on the opponent, the legal targets are; Men (head), Kote (wrist), Do (abdomen), Tsuki (throat)

  • bushido sixteen

  • In shotokan the kiai represents the same thing and its a great breathing exercise. It enables my to attack twice as fast and with much more power and i feel the whole body helping me than. And after i finish my attack i keep the kiai for more 1 or 2 seconds because it helps me get rid of the energy that...lets say... i prepaired to use on the attack but i didn't use. I didn't explain it well but the ones who know it will understand. @WarPig15 yes Bruce Lee was "kiai-ing" all the time.

  • samurai 7 brought me here .... lol

  • What's the loud shouting? I can't imagine that's how old samurais were sword fighting.

  • @WarPig15 it is a kiai, and it originates from samurai. it was used to unbalance your opponents ki. you will hear it done in most martial arts, especially budo such as karate and judo

  • @Grove2000 Aha. I thought it might be some unsportly taunting. I trained karate and noone ever explained to me why we did the kiai parts. And now I train aikido and we don't do kiai.

  • @WarPig15 Is that what Bruce Lee was doing??

  • @WarPig15 In Kendo, kiai are used to put the opponent off, as well as to project fighting spirit. Its not unsportly, at all, in fact; if no kiai is used and a hit declared by a cry, it is invalid. Kiai originate from war-cries and other such things, so yes, the samurai did use them. Different martial arts use Kiai, depending upon how they teach.

  • @Grove2000 Has anybody gone the Muhammad Ali route and just shouted, "Yo momma hit me harder last night!" or something?

  • i want to do kendo now and i want to do the haka if i do it

  • yeah, just finished the last episode of bamboo blade, it is so good, and it is exacly the same thing !!!!!!

  • It's like Darth Vader and Obi-Wan.

  • @Joe1729 Well, their styles for that movie were based on Kendo. ;)

  • try not to blink D:

  • They were so fast I couldn't tell who was scoring off of who. And if those were real swords would they really be letting their opponents blades be resting on their arms and shoulders like yhat?

  • @tatsumakisempyukaku: It's ok because they wear amour, you can't kill your opponents without a really strong fight by the properly part of sword.

  • 武道をスポーツとしてみるのは間違いだと思う。

    低評価する奴はスポーツチャンバラでも観てて下さいね。

  • these guys are fast... :O

  • this seems very boring :( all they do is sit on their tippy toes and try to hit eachother every 30 seconds

  • @Nakien lol it's true that watching kendo can be pretty boring. There's actually a lot going on in this match... it's not enough to simply 'tap' one of the target zones (forearms, top of head, sides of body, or throat) by mere chance and/or with poor posture. To score a point, they have to fully commit to the strike at the proper distance and opportunity.

There's also different ways to attack / counter. Booth players know these + rules, so they spend a lot of time "feeling" each other out.

  • why do they squat at the begging?

  • @alfiemcvelia24 The squat is part of the procedure of how a match begins, kind of like a ceremonial/respect thing.

On a more advanced level, though, high-level kendo players use these beginning moments to observe their opponent's posture, balance, & if they have any bad habits that may be exploited (ex. someone misjudging the distance to walk to the squatting line might also misjudge attack distance during match).

  • Holy shet, that last strike went fast!

  • Koreans shameless plagiarism has no limit.

Please find out the truth from following video.

  • I still don't get it- how can they tell who won? Was there a specific place one has to ''stab'' in order to win or is it something else?

  • @traeus Although im not an expert in kendo, as far as i know, they get points by hitting specific parts of the oppenents body. Points vary from which part you hit with the head probably beeing the one giving the most. Then again im just assuming.

  • @xxxPrInCoSxxx Read about it on Wikipedia (what seemed to be a trustworthy article) and I'm assuming you're right =P

  • their techique is aweso

  • Is kendo hard to do? I'm thinking of trying it when I get to college here in the U.S. And yes they do offer kendo

  • @lavamaster530 Do it, kendo is really fun :)

  • @lavamaster530 hey i also do kendo i think its great you shoud definitely do it :]

  • @lavamaster530

I'd say any sort of sport involving swordsmanship is tough. An alternative to Kendo is Fencing. Fencing has 3 weapons, and is more say "Technologically advanced" so it's much easier to tell what's going on and what's what. There are three different weapons and each have different rules. I'd highly recommend fencing, but if you're more leaning toward asian culture, then you should try Kendo.

  • @lavamaster530 I suggest reading up on it as many find traditional dojo's an experience they were not prepared for. (dedication, cultural differences, history lessons/inner reflection) Iaido is another Japanese swordsman style, as well that might interest you :P

I suggest reading Heart of Kendo by Darrell Max Craig. The Art of Japanese Swordsmanship by Nicklaus Suino.

  • They are so shaky, rofl.

  • bamboo blade brought me here!!

  • Always loved my Kendo. One day I might even try it. Watched heaps of Samurai movies as a kid (from Kurosawa movies, and Lone Wolf & Cub etc) and just finished watching Bamboo Blade. Love that Anime. :-)

  • KENDO

    SO YOURE A BAILIFF

NUDE SAUNA AD USER DEBRA MESSING HAROLD BISHOP FOSTER GUINESS GUESS INTERNATIONAL MANUAL MICROPROCESSOR SHOT KELLY ANDERSON BOSS RYAN REYNOLDS INDIA REYNOLDS TABATHA CASH

  • Peacemaker Kurogane brought me here :D

  • 88 people were thwacked by kendo swords.

  • Am I the only one who is thinking in Darth Vader?

  • @TVF100 I've heard the helmet of Darth Vader was designed based on a samurai warrior's helmet.

  • BANKAI!! lol. > w <

  • Me and my friend tried this without armour, don't!

  • Much more beautiful than fencing in my opinion.

  • @scheepskameelt are u serious! fencing flows much better, and can be far more intense

  • why dont they use their bankaiiis, i hear them yelling it

  • These guys are really bad at this.

  • @DudeIsOnFire1 i bet you wouldn't even last a sec against either of them when they only can use one hand.

  • @masterv14

    I take Kendo, too.

  • @DudeIsOnFire1 doesn't matter. I take kendo too but that doesn't mean that i am able to beat a championship level kendoka.

  • @masterv14

You're right. Sorry. I'm being arrogant & selfish.

  • how useful is kendo? i mean can you even defend yourself against someone or fight with kendo techniques?

  • @CuteAmyDoll

Yes, actually. Just don't pay attention to these guys. They still have work to do.

  • @CuteAmyDoll it's a sport it doesn't have to be usefull. it's the same with football it's not useful either, it's just fun to do.

  • @masterv14 seriously? it not just fun its also a skill. i mean if you know kendo or kung fu or even football you can use it outside of sport club.

  • hahahhah jacky chun can own both of those cock suckers

  • So, The White was kicking butt, but the red one hit em' in the head and won?

  • @KenpachiDar well yes....head shots are high points. think about it...if this was a real fight with real swords, a blow to the head would been instant win. same goes here.

  • Why do they stay all up in each other's faces like that? Is it a part of the contest or is it some kind of ritual thing?

  • @leftyfourguns It's like in boxing when they kind of get all tangled up. Everything you do in kendo is done for the purpose of demoralizing the opponent (hence the yelling and all). When they are face to face like that, it kind of serves as a staring contest. if you notice, as they back away, one of them always has his sword on the opponent so as to prevent him from getting a point.

  • @leftyfourguns

Lol. My teacher says to not chicken fight so much. They are actually supposed to keep the right distance.

  • i watched bamboo blade and thats what brought me here lol

  • @iluvdachsundpuppies same goves here for me xD

  • @iluvdachsundpuppies exactly the same. ! :D

  • @iluvdachsundpuppies lol! Same here.

  • @iluvdachsundpuppies same here, i hope there will be a season 2

  • watch "bamboo blade" its a show about kendo :)

    oh and its a anime/cartoon

  • @primula128 That's how I found out about Kendo! xD

  • @bballbabe95 lol of course, tamaki would win this match :3

  • @primula128 She sure would! :) And Kirono would be cheering her on!

  • @bballbabe95 Same here!

Great minds think alike..... and apparently watch the same shows XD

    Great video BTW.

  • @primula128 anime is not cartoon. thats why they invented a different fucking word for it. cuz its not only for 5yo. it is "anime" there IS no equeal in western culture so don't lower it by attempting such a thing, and least of american shit.

  • Comment removed

  • @AngelBiLove alright its not even all that serious

  • @AngelBiLove Anime cannot be compared to the poor quality of American Cartoons but Anime is technically a cartoon. They invented a different word for it, because it is a Japanese Animation; which would be a Japanese Cartoon. Im comparing Anime to teen Titans right now...it can be compared.

  • @primula128 I watch that show and it was very amazing in the kendo practice and match

  • If I were ever able to compete in a tournament like this, I would say really weird shit to throw off my opponent... Maybe something about how he killed my father in battle, or how he is no match for the darkside

  • @McFudge93 nothing you say may actually mean something. The only words with meaning that are yelled are Men, Kote, Do, and Tsuki which are the areas you attack (head, hand, stomach and throat)

  • so how do u win??? is it by points like how many times u hit the person or wat?

  • @deathfromasian there are 3 judges watching over the match and in order to obtain a point you need to "convince" at least 2 outa 3 judges that your strike is valid. A correct strike is made of 3 basic component (explained by the japanese expression ki ken tai ichi): Spirit sword and body must come together to obtain a perfect strike. It's hard to fully explain on a youtube comment XP if u r interested i suggest you find the nearest kendo dojo and go try kendo out! you won't regret it ^^

  • that was a clean men!!! the white 1 lost concentration in the last min. n lost the battle! that was great fight!

  • what the hell is this, naruto?

  • Headshot

  • I love that ceremony at the end. It's such a great way to show respect, honor, and sportsmanship.

  • Holy crap those are fast reactions. This is cooler than fencing IMO

  • I am a grappler but lately I've found an interest in Kendo, don't know why but for some reason whenever I see it, all I can see is pure technique, patience, and endurance... and as someone who is in Judo & Russian Sambo, I find this very appealing. I am starting to like Kendo :-)

  • the announcers make this so much more fun to watch

  • I want to be a master Kenshi one day. Not for sport though. My katana will only be used for real fights to the death.

  • @gregonthetube Then you don't deserve to be.

  • @MLGLastLevel Year your right about that, i really don't have the discipline, and that surely goes against the principles of the art. but its always been something i fantasized about. Its what drives me to train so hard .I know Im mess up in the head.

  • @gregonthetube You are suffering from Youth and Arrogance.

  • @gregonthetube Do you have a real Katana, which was custom made in Japan by a master swordsman? Or is it one of those knock off jobs you can buy in the states for a few hundred?

  • @pcjudosambo Nah I orderd it off the internet, I practice with a wood katana I have ever only show the real one to friends. The quality is great but i doubt it was made by a master sword maker. Do those guys even really exist anymore.

  • @gregonthetube yes they do and I've heard that real Katanas made by traditional swordsmen is illegal to transport outside the country. Plus they cost thousands of dollars but it's a work of art that will last for centuries (if taken care of properly). That's why I asked if you have a real one or not ... it's almost impossible to get a real one these days (unless you pay a lot of money and get it shipped to the states).

  • those shinias are heavy as a mother

  • excellent duel MEN! STRIKE!

  • @Stinkoman1212 Japanese version I suppose. The difference is that fencing is more concentrated on making rapid light contact with precision while kendo involves hard two handed strikes with speed

  • luke..... i am ur father..... answer: 0:34 :P

  • I was gonna do a kendo demo for my schhol talent show and then I got expelled :(

  • Yep to score a point in Kendo means to get a hit on your opponent with spirit, which is your mind, with good from, which is your body, and with your sword, which is your swordsmanship, if all these things are combined and scores a hit, a point is awarded. BODY, SWORD AND SPIRIT

  • @VLambo311

With these powers combined I am captain planet!

  • BLEEEEHHH! ARRRGGGHHH!

  • Is Kendo as effective with a real sword? Cause I would imagine that a steel sword would be dramatically heavier than a bamboo sword. (if that's what they're made of) haha

  • @theneenjah

Kendo is something like fencing. You can't use a real katana like that. If you wanna learn how to fight in a real katana you have to look for a real kenjutsu dojo. But a lot of the techniques you learn in kendo can actually be used in real katana fights too. Just it's too specified as a sport. Many people learn kendo and kenjutsu at the same time.

  • Is there an electronic scoring system like in fencing?

  • @yakuza488 As someone else said, the minimal age for shodan is 14. After shodan, you must wait a year. So 15 for nidan, then two years wait so 17 for sandan. If your friend is under 17 there is no way he could be sandan.

  • ok i'm a complete noob in kendo - i do fencing and we hv the electric scoring system to work out who won the bout - how do you win in Kendo??? can you get a KO in kendo?? l

  • @gamblersruin

All those hits on each other don't count. If they score a point, they will stop and reset. To get a point, you must have a perfect, clean hit with good spirit. Also, 2 out of 3 judges must agree to it being a good hit. Matches are 2 points = win or whoever has the most points when times runs out. If it's a tie, it'll go into overtime right away.

  • ok i'm a complete noob in kendo - i do fencing and we hv the electric scoring system to work out who won the bout - how do you win in Kendo???

  • @yakuza488 pretty sure the age limit for shodan is 14 years, after that it's 1 more year to nidan and then 2 more years to sandan

  • i wanna learn kendo even more now..

  • somebody who knows can tell me why they scream? it's necessary?

  • @yogolito They scream because they have to call each hit they make if my memory serves me correct. If you shout "doe" (stomach I believe) and hit the wrist "kote" (someone will correct me if I am wrong hopefully) you do not get the point. Each hit has to correspond with what your calling out for your hit. So yes it is necessary.

  • HA HA..real darth vader with wooden bamboo stick and no Force...

  • @Skathe247 Could you tell me where?

  • I want to ask a question. I read in a book written by two MA experts that Kendo can't be recognized as a Budo art anymore, because it moves away from the Budo principles. They say its combat effectivenes decreases because of too many sportive applications. Because it is not practiced in kata form, it says, it's not a 'true' Budo art.

I want serious responses only from people who have quite some knowledge about it. If you want more info about what I said, I can send the paragraph in a PM.

  • @FearThisChannel Kendo is practiced in kata form. The sport fighting you see in this video is not all there is to kendo. Look up "kendo kata" here on Facebook and you will find many, many kendo kata.

  • @storyacoustic Yeah, ok, but they also wrote that many new, mostly nonsensical techniques came into Kendo that have absolutely nothing to do with Kendo practice (genuine budo Kendo). My concern is that Kendo becomes too much of a sport, and that it will eventually dissapear as a budo art.

  • @FearThisChannel It would be a shame if kendo took the route of modern sport "fencing"...

  • @SubSevn Damn straight!

  • I've always been interested in Kendo but haven't had an opportunity to learn or even watch it. Thanks for posting this.

  • half way thru watching vid... these better be girls under there because it's turning me on.

  • since Kendo has no weight classes doesn't that make it a little unfair for shorter people fighting much taller people?

  • @Denver1928 ofc taller longer arms = win win :P

  • id lol if during the fight one of them announced out load 'I AM YOUR FATHER!'

  • I've never seen proper Kendo matches before. it doesn't look anything like in Bamboo Blade XD (it's an anime)

  • i love kendo

  • Meh... Uma Thurman could whip both of their asses.

But this was a pretty cool vid though

  • @theguy1991

No her eyes are too far apart to properly see out of the headgear.

  • @nitsuj02 lol

  • i realized almost immediately that all the blocks are either exaggerated or under exaggerated blocks in iaido the same thing with the attacks
