We are looking for external solutions to a systemic problem, infinite wants butting up against finite energy supply. The politicians can't save us because they are answerable to a system designed only for endless growth to satisfy endless wants. We need international cooperation, personal sacrifice and a turn away from globalization. We will instead have the exact opposite. Prepare for a resource limited future, the government can't do it for you.
eeogan i'd like to believe you but check out the Farm Bill this week. Pelosi is all excited about the Ethanol promotion in the bill. Ethanol is a HORRIBLE idea from every angle: energy efficiency, land use, food supply and environmental damage.
If you ask government to have a plan for oil, you are asking for a disaster on top of a disaster, sort of like FEMA and the Corp of Engineers handled the Katrina disaster. Already, politicians have caused a large amount of resources to be squandered on the non solution of ethanol.
At current rates of use, the ANWR oil would last about 6 months, most experts say. So thanks for playing, but no. :) The better short-term solution is: use public transit - walk - bike - join a car-sharing service - live locally - drive a high efficiency vehicle if you must.
thanks for the support yall. i'll try again with the republican debate. meanwhile, you can read my debate coverage at baratunde . com / blog should be up shortly under "twitter updates" for july 23. peace

It's all about R&D which is being squashed. Take the California VS EPA issue for instance. 1-20-09 is when we'll really start seeing changes.
