if depression were a spiritual awakening that would set the person free to grow and become content and balanced. I can see how this theory would be in contrast to the future prospects of the psych. community in terms of income- so what on earth would be the incentive for a "professional" to explore that possibility?! I am certain my depression was a spiritual awakening- and I was able to get through it unhindered, and onto health and well being with merely God's guidance.

This is why psychology is a descriptive science (i.e. not science). You can describe people's behaviors and can employ statistics to aid that process (like an astrologer describes births). But when it comes to explaining the cause, you fail hard. Real science is *explains phenomena.

But it's worse because you take your hypothesized causes as fact. You don't honor the null hypothesis. There's no skepticism. None of your claims would last 5 minutes in the rigorous scientific arena.

As an example, in Catholicism there would carmelite, dominican, franciscan, benedictine, ignatian (etc) spiritualities, usually linked to specific ways of life of religious communities and orders. There is no grounds for saying "spirituality is to believe in yourself", that's just a random guess.

For me it was situational. I thought there was something seriously wrong with me. I was about a half inch away from a dramatic multiple murder suicide episode that probably would have gotten me mentioned on CNN. For a couple years I always carried a megadose of sleeping pills with me just in case I needed a quiet exit. Luckily I held myself together long enough for my enlistment in the army to end.

Since I've gotten out of the army I haven't wanted to kill myself or anyone else, even once.

2. My worst time was during the first gulf war, and traveling down the highway of death in Iraq. I tried not to look at all the bodies but there were some people who seemed to get some kind of gleeful charge out of counting them, adding some of them up in fractions. It was bad. Shortly after that I nearly killed a couple jerks that really needed it. I'm a very neat person so I would have shot myself afterward just to keep things organized. God I was a mess.

3. Once I got out of the army though it took a few months but I slowly unwound and resumed a normal human life. Then I went to school for something that I was actually cut out to do. You see I was always a mechanic, even as a kid, only I didn't know it. In saudi I found out just how far ahead of normal I am in that department. Now, 19 years later I'm happy and pretty well adjusted.

You two have also been through the fire, and have come out the other side. I salute you.
