This pilot is very good.Laura's or Melissa gilbert's voice was adorable and Laura was so little and pretty with her crochet bonnet and coat.Mary was lovely too and Little Carrie just a darling.i ever loved this pilot which is faithful in a way to real Laura ingall's books.The conditions of their travel weren't easy and comfortable at all like all pionners back this time but people were happy and satisfied with little things and the clothes and food they had.Life was tough but full of love.

It is hard to imagine what desperation and guts it must have taken to leave your loved ones,pack your meagre belongings and haul young children into the Wild wilderness. I know these days we belittle the settlers,and champion the natives in America and Australia,but settlers had balls.I salute them.As a migrant myself ,I can empathise,even though modern migration is nowhere near as hard as in the 1870s.I just wish there was a way that both setters and natives both won out.

I remember when Jack died. That was a sad episode. Like so many of us, Laura had kind of drifted away from her pet as she got older and didn't realize he was on his last legs.

I noticed Mary is wearing her hair in a braid in the scene at 6:00. She never wore it like that on the show though.

@pamela31301 I guess because Jack was too big, since he was a sheepdog in the show. Seeing as he was a bulldog in the books, however, and would have easily fit, that's a good question!

Maybe Pa couldn't be slowed down and stop the wagon every time Jack "had an emergency." That would be my guess...

Yes, I noticed that too. I was wondering if "Charles" was supposed to go and pick Mary up or he did it because she almost fell. The scene looked very natural showing the father going to help the child that was struggling. It was perfect because it left Laura still walking towards the wagon making it apparent that she was doing the narrating.

The Pilot movie was the very first movie (made for tv). It was the precurser to the series. The first show in the actual "series" was called "A Harvest of Friends" followed by "Country Girls", then "The Hundred Mile Walk"...I could go on and on....

Two old horses who don't have the strength to pull a wagon any long distance in exchange for two young, strong horses, one of which is pregnant. That's a hell of a deal, and not very probable.

Actually i think something like that did happen - she mentions it in her books - Litlte House on the Prairie I think... the new horses were ponies not regular horses... I don't remember exactly.

They were traded for ponies not horses so there is a difference. Also people had more compassion towards others back then. I think that's one reason why I love this movie and the series so much.

The horse that was pregnant was probably just recently concieved. It'd be ludicrous to work a mare that was in the middle to the end of her pregnancy.
