  • Guercio makes a political opinion speech on a day he should have been purely honoring American service men without the critical rhetoric regarding the Iraq war and terrorism. They were correct to censor him during the Shirley Village ceremonies. Not the time or place for that.

  • "We live in a world that has walls and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns.I know deep down in places you dont talk about at parties, you don't want me on that wall, you need me on that wall. We use words like honor, code, loyalty as the backbone of a life spent defending something, you use them as a punchline"

  • Dear USAMPC

I was standing next to the person who filmed this, and I can verify that this is in fact the entire speech. I'd like to know what you think is missing? I strongly disagree with the current war but I support your right to say what you believe just as I support this man's. A WWII vet and a Vietnam vet told him the only problem was he didn't say more. What do you think of their perspective? I really would like to understand why it angers you so much.

  • The people who support this embarrassment need to know. This is NOT the whole speech, editing was done well. THIS isn't the man you want to be your standard bearer for Truth, Justice and the American way. You more than likely support his speech/him ONLY because you disagree with the current war. I'm sure, other speakers at this event felt the same, all but this man had the decency to honor what the day was about and the men/woman there in life or in spirit.

  • Free speech sure. He could have even burned the flag to make a statement but the issue here is respecting the venue and appropriateness. The is Memorial Day and a day to pay respec to those who gave their lives. Period.

When you are an invited guest you should respect the occasion or decline the invitation. Disrespect Memorial Day and we veterans will exercise our free speech also.

  • Great speech; measured and reasoned without rancor. What better way to honor the sacrifice of our sons and daughters who have given so much than to reflect on the freedoms they protect.

  • 'The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.' -English philosopher Edmund Burke

  • This was EXACTLY the place for such a statement. What better way to honor fallen soldiers and those currently serving than to let them know that while they are fighting, or have died, for our democracy, we, at home, are doing our part to preserve our democracy as well.

  • That was not the setting for that political statement.

  • Sometimes the hardest thing to hear is the truth. This was an excellent speech, full of measured reason and free of the sensationalized hysterics that make up the majority of political speeches nowadays. If only more politicians would speak to us as the adults we are, perhaps there could once again be real discussions in this country instead of emotion-fueled name calling.

  • 3 cheers for freedom of speech - finally.
