I wonder how the D2 is going to stack up to the Sony NEX-VG10 once it comes out. A consumer level camcorder (as much as a $2000 camcorder is in the consumer range) with a ACS-C sized Sony Exmor sensor, which is the same sensor tech as on the XR500, just a LOT larger, and exchangeable lenses with the possibility to use Sony A-Mount lenses, and AF. Even better, the NEX-3 and -5's use the same sensor and lens mount.
5D M 2 was designed for the Photo Journalists in mind. Everyone is pushing the limits with this camera. It is pretty amazing. Movies and HBO series have been shot with the Mark II. Focusing is an issue in Video mode. It was never intended to be some of the things people are using if for which goes to show its ability to handle a multitude of different situations. I am using it for underwater photography. Much of the clarity in the above video can be handled correctly with the correct lens.
I want one of these cameras but is it justifiable paying over double for the canon mk ii? anybody got any advice on this, can you get the xr 500 or xr 520 (which I assume is slightly better) to perform to the standard of the mk ii and obviously this is a good comparison but i cant make a decision on this footage alone, i have a macbook and im going to buy final cut express, ive heard the xr 520 works well with it but the canon struggles due to its file type and sheer video size.
Using DOF adapter is definitely a good idea to get the film like effect. In fact, 5D2/7D does have obvious aliasing issue when there is any high frequency pattern. Such problem seldom occur in prosumer grade or better DV/DOF adapter combo.
Autofocus of 5D2/7D can be quite effective before you start recording. However, if you are going to shoot some family video, better forget 5D2/7D and get a handy camcorder like XR500/520. You'll run into problem when you try to chase kids with 5D2/7D.
Well... using a DOF adapter with the XR 500 will give you very good depth of field experience indeed, cheap. So for those on a budget wanting to experiment with video this is the superior option. And becides, dont get fooled by the hype with Vincent LaForet`s video for promoting the 5d. Its taken with rigs, tripods, car mounts, helicopters and shit so... look beyond the hype.
The XR 500 with a DOF adapter will kick the 5d MKII out of the water in terms of cost, usability and video specc.

And on the depth of field note, it all depends on what lense you use, whether its an f1.2 to f4. You will always get different DOF effects, i sell cameras for a job.

are we forgetting the points of portability, convenience, and cost in this rant? not to mention the important lack autofocus on the 5d. To be able to walk around, zoom, focus, and keep the 5d steady requires either another costly external rig or an extra arm and inhuman amounts of focus whereas the xr you can run around zooming in and out jumping around without a worry in the world.

I own both a 5d and a Sony CX520. the video on the 5d is light-years ahead, the lack of auto focus is a minor hitch. The most annoying thing is the minimal recording time. but 12 mins or so is adequate. I use the CX520 for holidays and shit where the 5d is impractical.

come on, sony sucks for the price. take in consideration that the image is zoomed in on the sony thus creating an effect of having a better resolution.
The DoF on the Canon is far more controllable because it largely depends on the lens you are using and the aperture you have set it to. However, if you set it very shallow (wide aperture) it is hard to keep the whole thing in sharp focus as there is no AF when video shooting with the 5d mkII. Set the lens to a narrower aperture and this isn't a problem.

5D MK II does not use all the pixels in video mode. It simply drops pixels. That's why 5D MK II suffers seriously from aliasing/moire/false color.

sorry, i have seen some films made with Canon 5d, and i didnt know that it can record in 1080p/30fps !!
Quality is incredible, however it can only record 12min material movie : (
And its using FAT system of storage, so max size of movie can be only 4gb : (

the depth of field of the 5D2 is much shallower, it looks like the butterfly wasn't in perfect focus.
