You have to turn the packs on... Otherwise in your case you and the passengers are dead. Also you have your startup backwards. Your supposed to start in this order 4,3,2,1.and you forgot your lights
@Youre1Garbage That's actually bullshit. Every company has it's own startup sequence. The 747 is certified to startup all 4 engines at the same time ;) KLM for example first starts 3 and 4, then 1 and 2.

good tutorial :) I think you are following the checklist from pmdg:s website, but I just want to tell everyone that that checklist is based on a real one, which means it made fot two pilots, they have just put Captains first, then the co-pilots, sometimes you have to the same things twice according to that checklist, i have written an own one based on the real one, but i is for ONE pilot
@sawtrycolts Once you set them to align and then Set IRS Position in the FMC and they start aligning, youll notice 3 IRS Alignment Times at the upper left of your map screen. When these times reach 0 and you turn the IRS Switches back to NAV, and your artificial horizon and route map will spring to life.
no no no no ! you do not turn on the lights right away. just nav, logo, possibly wing. beacon is for when you start the engines and strobe is for takeoff!

The 747-400F needs power to open the cargo doors. You should first create key commands for the cargo doors.Then you should have the APU switched on with APU gen1 and gen 2 AVIAL light showing, now switch on APU gen 1. There should be power to open the doors.
You have to make the key commands yourself. They should be under PMDG-General-Key Commands-then scroll down till you see cargo - 747. Set key commands for 175-177
ANGICHA is correct... that is the proper procedure and u shud never start two engines at the same time... are u wanting to draw too much from the APU... depending where u are,, u can configure the de-ice after an engine is going but that is based on whether conditions.
@thehypersquirrel - On the 400, the APU has enough bleed output to start 2 engines simultaneously.. Different companies have different sequences, some start 4 and 3 together, then 2 and 1 together. 4 is started first as it provides the normal hyd. power for brakes.
@twsbbl - the 747's APU isn't as powerful as you think... u can also start any engine u want... it is recommended 4 so u r correct but all the engines have hydro press. for the brakes and even then u can use the electric pumps so it doesn't really matter... still he'd get sued by the airport if he turned all those lights on then
1. NAV lights switched on whenever the battery is on
2. Beacon light switched on ONLY prior to pushback or taxi, not before that.
3. Strobe lights are normally switched on when already on the runway because of their high intensity supposing that they can molest other pilots
4. Packs should be switched ON once you got bleed air available, so do the Trim air and Recirculation switches, (normally at least 20 mins prior to boarding) in order to assure the comfortable environment for the passengers

The AVAIL lights come on as soon as the APU is up and running. I was going to speed the clip up to not waste any time but when I said that, the lights came on.

Maybe all ofyou should read the AOM included with the 747... that clears up pretty everything. But obviously it's a toy for you and you just wanna skip the technical stuff and get in the air...

Hi, when I select LCD or CRT in the options menu, the screens look the same as CRTs and not the LCDs, also the analog back-up instruments are there instead of the ISIS backup.
I really have no idea. However, it is a known fact that if your screens don't work when you load up the plane or they don't light up when you start the engines or they shut off a minute or two into a flight... it's because the version you have is cracked and illegal. I'm making no assumptions but I've never heard of such an issue where you can't click on anything on the overhead. Sorry.
The TO/GA switch is the little screw to the left of the A/T ARM switch. Make sure you advance throttles to around 70% N1, let them stabilize and then click the screw. On the real 747-400, the TO/GA switch is on the throttle levers. However, it's not visible and thus, they decides to simulate it somewhere else.
good vid.....but at 8:00, u forgot to turn CTR L & CTR R fuel pumps on..; ) ......you left those pumps off. The normal engine starting sequence should be 4 3 2 1 but why did you choose 4 & 1 first.....?
And one last Q. when the battery is off and no external power is available then why the UTILITY POWER, BUS TIE, GENERATOR CONTROL, ENGINE PUMPS, ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROL are on? All of these should have been OFF before battery switch ON. you can use pack 1 to norm to start engines. good luck
I didn't turn on those fuel pumps because I had no fuel in those tanks. I also used the Cold&Dark panel state. By default, the Utility Power, Bus Tie, etc... Are already on.
The packs are what regulate cabin temperature. It's your air conditioning. The reason you turn them off during engine start is to save air pressure to start the engines up. You'll notice this is you've went flying on a commercial jet during the summer. At the gate, the air conditioning is up and running and then, when the engines need to be started, they're turned off.
"Packs" are air conditioning units which draw bleed air from the engines or APU, or air from a ground cart which is more rarely used. They are considered a part of the Pneumatic System of an aircraft, and they take hot air from different compression stages of the engines/APU and produce air for the cabin, cockpit and gasper units through a complicated cycle too advanced to explain here. I'll explain briefly in this next post...
When the pack draws this hot bleed air, it is divided into two lines: a "hot" line (which remains mostly untreated) and a "cold" line which will pass through an Air Cycle Machine containing heat exchangers and other treatment equipment. The two lines meet again where valves regulate how many parts cold and hot air must be mixed so to produce the temperature designated by the flight crew. This cabin-ready air is then distributed via distribution lines to the cabin, gasper units, and cockpit.

hey, i've got a couple of problems with my plane. i follow all the steps you do, but the nav doesnt setup properly, you cannot see the heading. secondly when i press cancel in the EICAS and press recall again these warnings come up in yellow writing:
Autobrakes
>no autoland
>Yaw damper LWR
>Yaw damper UPR.
do you know why these things happen and how i can fix them?
FYI: when i first load the cold and dark cockpit i realized that all the IRS are alredy set to NAV and not "off".
You have to make sure the IRS align time is set to instant. As for the EICAS warnings, you can read up on the manuals to know how to troubleshoot each message. Yaw damper LWR and UPR: you need to engage the yaw dampers via the overhead panel, etc.
If the IRS is set to NAV prior to starting up the aircraft, switch them to the off position and then begin the procedures.
Then how would you explain some users out there with pirated version who aren't able to get the screens lit up? Obviously it's due to the fact that the version isn't genuine and obviously PMDG knew about this and found out a pretty clever way to overcome pirates of their software.
The only reason the screens dont lite up are cuz of the DLL files witch can be found easly on the google...PS i did not pirate my PMDG My friends pitates everything they have they just needed my help to fix theres
If you followed my tutorial to the letter and still can't get the screens started up, I'm afraid to tell you that your pirated version wont do you any good. Buy it and you wont have any problems! :)

If you followed my tutorial TO THE LETTER and still can't get the screens to turn on, I'm afraid I have to tell you that it's possibly because you have downloaded an illegal version of the aircraft. This is the number one cause to why the screens won't turn on.
oh yehthis is just a response, the question about the screens not turning on. The screen do not turn on from cold and dark state at all and they turn on for 1 minute on standard state. If these are your symptoms it means you are using a pirated version of PMDG 747 or your product has a curupted registary. If you bought it legally best thing to do is reinstall and the REG file will be replaced.
Sir sorry to correct you but,how did you switch on the apu before you started up the apu bleed air?and another question why didn't you make the eletric dangerous check before you start apu to avoid get dry on batteries?

Thank you for correcting me, but as the video description says, this tutorial is BASIC. I didn't plan on making real life 747-400 pilots with this video. It's just a means of getting the aircraft started up quickly and easily, in the sim. It may not be the right way, but this is how I showed them. If they want to learn how to do it with 100%, they can go and learn it for themselves. ;)

Nice tutorial!
The PMDG 747 is a nice bird, but quite hard to fly on your own.
That's why I enlist the help of a virtual co-pilot to adjust speed, altitude, heading and other things via voice commands, when my hands are full.
I use something called "Multi Crew Experience" (for which there is a time limited Demo) and it takes simming to a new level.
The best thing after TrackIR is definitely voice control.

after the APU came online... you shouldve turned on the packs to cool down ur avionics and provide ventilation to the aircraft.

I don't really pay much attention to them. I think they move the cargo pallets onto and out of the plane but thats all.

5. EICAS should be Recalled/Cleared once all systems are working, including the engines.
6. Normally at least one pack should be left on when starting the engines, as you get higher Duct Pressure minimizing the "soft start risk"

how do you upgrade the 400F model to 1.20? my pax version is 1.20 but my freighter model is still at 1.12

You mentioned that you shouldn't have turned on the beacon, but you missed the strobes. They aren't to be turned on unitl the runway entry procedure.

I really have no idea. However, it is a known fact that if your screens don't work when you load up the plane or they don't light up when you start the engines or they shut off a minute or two into a flight... it's because the version you have is cracked and illegal. I'm making no assumptions but I've never heard of such an issue where you can't click on anything on the overhead. Sorry.

I have a problem...I can't find the TO/GA switch in the PMDG 747-400 'the queen of the sky'
Unless I use it, i have to adjust thrust manually till I get THR REF VNAV SPD (Autothrottle, Autopilot Pitch Mode). Can you help me?

You're welcome! Glad it helped.
The TO/GA switch is the little screw to the left of the A/T ARM switch. Make sure you advance throttles to around 70% N1, let them stabilize and then click the screw. On the real 747-400, the TO/GA switch is on the throttle levers. However, it's not visible and thus, they decides to simulate it somewhere else.

good vid.....but at 8:00, u forgot to turn CTR L & CTR R fuel pumps on..; ) ......you left those pumps off. The normal engine starting sequence should be 4 3 2 1 but why did you choose 4 & 1 first.....?
And one last Q. when the battery is off and no external power is available then why the UTILITY POWER, BUS TIE, GENERATOR CONTROL, ENGINE PUMPS, ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROL are on? All of these should have been OFF before battery switch ON. you can use pack 1 to norm to start engines. good luck

I didn't turn on those fuel pumps because I had no fuel in those tanks. I also used the Cold&Dark panel state. By default, the Utility Power, Bus Tie, etc... Are already on.

The packs are what regulate cabin temperature. It's your air conditioning. The reason you turn them off during engine start is to save air pressure to start the engines up. You'll notice this is you've went flying on a commercial jet during the summer. At the gate, the air conditioning is up and running and then, when the engines need to be started, they're turned off.

"Packs" are air conditioning units which draw bleed air from the engines or APU, or air from a ground cart which is more rarely used. They are considered a part of the Pneumatic System of an aircraft, and they take hot air from different compression stages of the engines/APU and produce air for the cabin, cockpit and gasper units through a complicated cycle too advanced to explain here. I'll explain briefly in this next post...

When the pack draws this hot bleed air, it is divided into two lines: a "hot" line (which remains mostly untreated) and a "cold" line which will pass through an Air Cycle Machine containing heat exchangers and other treatment equipment. The two lines meet again where valves regulate how many parts cold and hot air must be mixed so to produce the temperature designated by the flight crew. This cabin-ready air is then distributed via distribution lines to the cabin, gasper units, and cockpit.

hey, i've got a couple of problems with my plane. i follow all the steps you do, but the nav doesnt setup properly, you cannot see the heading. secondly when i press cancel in the EICAS and press recall again these warnings come up in yellow writing:
Autobrakes
>no autoland
>Yaw damper LWR
>Yaw damper UPR.
do you know why these things happen and how i can fix them?
FYI: when i first load the cold and dark cockpit i realized that all the IRS are alredy set to NAV and not "off".

You have to make sure the IRS align time is set to instant. As for the EICAS warnings, you can read up on the manuals to know how to troubleshoot each message. Yaw damper LWR and UPR: you need to engage the yaw dampers via the overhead panel, etc.
If the IRS is set to NAV prior to starting up the aircraft, switch them to the off position and then begin the procedures.

Then how would you explain some users out there with pirated version who aren't able to get the screens lit up? Obviously it's due to the fact that the version isn't genuine and obviously PMDG knew about this and found out a pretty clever way to overcome pirates of their software.

If you followed my tutorial to the letter and still can't get the screens started up, I'm afraid to tell you that your pirated version wont do you any good. Buy it and you wont have any problems! :)

If you followed my tutorial TO THE LETTER and still can't get the screens to turn on, I'm afraid I have to tell you that it's possibly because you have downloaded an illegal version of the aircraft. This is the number one cause to why the screens won't turn on.

oh yehthis is just a response, the question about the screens not turning on. The screen do not turn on from cold and dark state at all and they turn on for 1 minute on standard state. If these are your symptoms it means you are using a pirated version of PMDG 747 or your product has a curupted registary. If you bought it legally best thing to do is reinstall and the REG file will be replaced.

Sir sorry to correct you but,how did you switch on the apu before you started up the apu bleed air?and another question why didn't you make the eletric dangerous check before you start apu to avoid get dry on batteries?

Thank you for correcting me, but as the video description says, this tutorial is BASIC. I didn't plan on making real life 747-400 pilots with this video. It's just a means of getting the aircraft started up quickly and easily, in the sim. It may not be the right way, but this is how I showed them. If they want to learn how to do it with 100%, they can go and learn it for themselves. ;)

I didn't set the trim for this tutorial. You would have to program the FMC and get the correct fuel, weight information to know your trim setting.
You need hydraulic pressure for this and the APU can provide it or you can wait until you start the engines before trimming.
