I recently purchased a Stora MS2000 and I would not recommend it. The product needs improvements and accessing your network shares from OS X (Finder) and Windows OS (Windows Explorer) is frustrating. I have tried updating the Stora's firmware and have installed the latest (v2.5) Stora Desktop Applications for OS X and Windows and there were no performance improvements or enhancements to the Stora's tokenistic interface (accessed via web browser).
Hey there. The network shares are fixed but you can create as many folders as you want within those shares. Hope that makes sense! it was a bit of a geeky reply but don't know how else to say it!
@amdnovello Not right now. There are plans to add one in the near future. Note: this will be one of the Premium Subscription features included in the $19 per year subscription.
Alternatvely you could look at ReadyNAS Duo which is designed for more advanced users and includes a Torrent client as standard.
Stora is simple network storage. To keep the price low and the simplicity high, some of the more advanced features are based upon a yearly subscription. Things like Flickr uploads, secure FTP, iPhone access. Its $19.99 per year. Go to the netgear website and download the data sheet for the full skinny.
The whole name of the ReadyNAS Duo is Netgear ReadyNAS duo :-) There's a video intro to it on my page somewhere.
Hi. Can anyone tell me if it is possible to set up multiple user accounts on mystoradoccom? So, I can back up from work remotely and my girlfriend can back up from her work remotely...
You can set up 3 user accounts on Stora so each user can have their own personal storage space. Backing up remotely is probably a non starter due to the limitations of broadband speed to be honest.
Sorry, when I say 'Back-Up' I actually mean save files (MS word, In-Design, Photoshop and Illustrator docs, etc.). I don't intend to back-up the entire computer.
The reason I ask is... We work for rival companies so need to have private folders on there. From your response I guess this is possible(?).
Yeah you can have an account each with private space and you could save your files across the internet to that private destination.
Check out my video "Stora upload walkthrough Video" which shows me uploading some files to Stora. Though I did this locally it is exactly the same process wherever you are, providing you have internet access.
I've got one of these and remote access works as standard. All you do is install Stora and part of the process is registering it for remote access. Then you go to mystoradotcom and login using a stora name, user name and password. Thats it. No port forwarding or router configs or static IP needed. Its stupid easy.
Stora is a fully DLNA Certified media server so it will stream content to Xbox360 and PS3 with no problems asd these are DLNA compliant devices with built in media players. Nintendo Wii doesn't have a media player in it and is not DLNA compliant, they simply didn't design it with media streaming in mind, so that ones a no.
you can now. Remote access from a PC or Mac has just been added as a standard feature, so it costs nothing extra. Just go to mystora from anywhere to access your stuff. If you are on the local network it intelligently reroutes you on to the LAN.
@peterairs Great! I was about to consider an alternative if it didn't but, kind of like the build quality, industrial look and added functionality of this. little puppy. Is thing as noisy as the other Ready NAS products? I watched a vid on here of the Ready Nas and it sounded as if it was about to take off.
I am interested to understand the premium service. The product literature emphasizes storing media files. What I am looking for is shared network storage for virtual enterprise. I want people to be able to mount this like a drive on any Mac or PC anywhere. There are services like this in the cloud, egnyte, for example, but they are pricey by comparison. Can you clarify if this is possible with Stora?
yep, Stora comes with built in backup called Desktop Mirror. Everything you save on your notebooks docs (for example) gets squirted to your Stora as soon as you save it.
I set the Stora up with the Desktop Mirror but when I save something to my docs on my pc it does not squirt to the Stora. Any suggestions in settings?
ive just set desktop mirror up on an XP machine and it works fine. Its not CDP, so it doesn't send files to Stora every time something is saved but you can schedule down to every 5 mins. Then it checks to see if something new is saved and sends the new stuff to Stora. Working fine for me.
I can see the backed up docs in "My Computer" in the Stora web interface.

Do you have to have a $19 yearly subscription for this?
alandicho 1 year ago
@alandicho You only need to buy the Stora Premiium services ($19.99 per year) if you want the following:
More than 3 user accounts (will soon be 5 as standard, Premium give you unlimited)
Secure FTP
Browsing with Cooliris
Mobile Phone remote access
RSS Feeds
Flickr integration
All other features are standard and free. So you only need to upgrade if you need the above.

Can you create your own custom named folders ? And will this work if you have a dynamic IP address ? Thanks :)

And yes it wants to work with a dynamic IP address (ie: one that your router gives out via DHCP)

Does the remote access outside the home network require a static IP address to be provided by the ISP?

Nope!

No static IP or router configuration is required. Just go to mystoradotcom to access from anywhere once your Stora has been installed at home.

Quite a neat little kit with DLNA support. I wonder if the files stored can be accessed outside the network without paying for myspora?

I think it's very quiet, and certainly much quieter than any ReadyNAS, but noise is a personal thing.
Soooooo, I'm going to record a movie of my Stora, with sound, but first I need to find something that we all know that you can compare it's noise to.
Thinking.............

It may be your operating system, I've used it on Vista and a Mac with Time Machine.
You best bet is to quickly post a query on the stora support forum with full details of the systems you are trying to back up.
You Tube wont let me post links, so here it is in code...
go to dubya dubya dubya netgear dot corm
Click on "support" on the top bar
the last entry on "support links" on the left side of the page is "discussion forums".
You will find the Stora support forums in there.

YouTube wont even let me post the word "com" in some of my replys!

apologies if I dont reply to your question but YouTube wont let me post replys for some reason!

Stora is not for you. It's a home product pure and simple.
You need ReadyNAS not Stora. Check out the feature "ReadyNAS Remote" it may do what you want.
Theres a video about it from Yoh Dah go search!

Hello Peter,
How do you set the stora up to squirt a file that is created and saved on my hard drive?
Thank you for any help.
Skobeans1 2 years ago
Stora comes with a piece of software called Desktop Mirror that runs on your PC or MAC. A few simple steps and you're sorted.
Every time you save something to your documents (or any other folder you have told the software to watch) it will squirt it to Stora.
