@pccoder2671 It's a very good rifle. The parts I'm not a fan of aren't responsible for how tightly the parts fit. The tightness comes from the precision machining of the parts. I do like my rifle and have no intention of getting rid of it. It's one of the more accurate AR's I've owned.
@Frankfitz: I'm actually having an issue with the front pivot pin on my MR. For some reason while getting some range time in, the detent and detent spring got jarred lose and fell somewhere around my range. I was able to locate the spring, but no detent. Any suggestions?? H&K said this Was the first they've heard of. The day I called they were field testing the 762, so I gotta try to get the head MR guy on the phone again today....
@nesskafaen i thought i remembered the norwegian version didn't need the tool for the takedown pins. and there's a piece on the sling to unscrew the handguard, isn't there?
@norwegianwiking yeah there is a tool integrated on the sling but people rarely use it because you can tighten/untighten it with your hands just fine.
As wonderful as an over-priced piston AR may be I MUCH prefer my DI AR.
This video was very informative and taught me that this gun has clearly been over-engineered to the point where it's become a great inconvenience to the user.
ok so all the important easily lost parts are basically captive but i need a special easily lost tool to take it apart. It also couldn't be zeroed because you need a special tool to adjust the elevation. and it cost $2500. and it doesn't work with pmags. i could get a scar and an aimpoint for what this thing costs.
When the feces hits the fanblades I'll stick to my AK, than you very much. No gimmicks, no special tools, just good ol' fashioned reliability in any climate and condition.
The only thing that I thought was cool was the fire pin retaining pin slides so far and locks I droped mine last lol but other then that the rife is just a more complex sr 556
This.. is just stupid for disassembly. You'd better pray you don't jam up in a firefight with it...
I'll give them precision... that's as far as that's gonna go though. It's overly complicated. plus needing to rebuy some magazines or switch out the lower to use what you've got? That just sounds like a bad investment.
@lvcsslacker Well, the HK 416 has regular push pins like every other AR. At least in the take down video that I saw, it had standard push pins. I don't really see the appeal of the MR556A1 unless you're a die hard HK fanboy. Looking at the compared to an LWRC M6A2, with it's EXO coated bolt/bolt carrier, 41V45 nitrided barrel, even stronger bolt, and Cerakote finish...you wonder where the extra $200 goes.
all that money and there is nothing that special about this gun at all.
also, I DONT like the weight, which hk did because they were having trouble with the piston causing the barrel to whip. other short stroke pistons have engineered around this instead of simply adding howitzer barrel
Do you have any sources backing up the claim that HK went with this ridiculous barrel profile because of barrel whip or is that just more internet lore?
nothing about this rifle makes me want to buy it if i want propitiatory parts including the hand guard disassembly the barrel is way to thick i hate the m4 profile but this is just to heavy and expensive.
It's astounding to me how such a fine company, making such a fine rifle could screw up on something so big as to have the rifle depend on a tool for takedown and the reverse. HK engineers are not stupid; they know this is not the best way to create a product. I think they just wanted do set their rifle apart by making it different. Dumb idea. I would never buy that rifle, unless the aftermarket came up with a system to replace those stupid pins. This kind of stuff amazes me to no end.
Just googled it a bit... seems those cock sucking frame pins are some kind of law-compliant gizmo, maybe german law forbids AR's to be offered on civilian market if they can be disassembled without tools. Sure thing is, military version (hk 416) uses simple pins and can be taken apart without the little stupid tool, vids of this are on youtube.
I was wondering if the HK MR556A1 was worth the cost, and I completely agree that it's not vs a standard mil spec AR15. $2,500.00 seems better spent on a FN SCAR16S. Even so, that too is out of my price range. At least the SCAR has a barrel that's guaranteed for 20K under normal use. And it's lighter weight.
@millster101 I haven't had much first hand experience with the POF AR's outside of just handling them. I'm not a big fan of the AR piston guns in general, I prefer DI guns. Since I have to purchase every firearm you see in these videos, and given my lack of interest in piston AR's, it might be some time before I invest in another expensive gas piston AR. :)
Every part is different just enough to require paying up the ass for HK only replacement parts. Don't get me wrong, HK makes good guns but damn does their pricing on everything suck. I was looking at buying a USC years ago and the big deal breaker was the $130 10 round magazines not to mention all the overpriced accessories. $50-70 for a USP 45 mag? Sorry HK, you're good, but not $2800 for an AR requiring special parts and tools good.
if you click on the hk mr556a1 by gunwebsites video on the left...then click on HK416 by gunwebsites it says you dont need any tools to dissasmemble it.
Seems the parts that we are not a fan of are the reason it's such a tight fitting system. I'm seriously considering buying one.

so the main difference between this and hk416 is that 416 doesnt require tools to dissasemble and doesnt have family mode? got a 416N myself :)

@TheQ3XXX yes, it has nothing to do with VAT. it's
HK of Germany's insane pricing that is the same in europe.

You know what's INSANE? In Canada and Europe, the same gun from HK Germany is
$4700 USD!!
Thats a really nice way hk is telling civilians buyers to f*** themselves.
Even in the US, the new sig piston rifle is wildly cheaper, I wonder how they compare preformance wise etc.
