I know that nowhere near as many Americans have died in Iraq as did in Vietnam, but I think that the the casualties suffered by our servicemen and women and those in the Middle East should have been enough to inspire a Vietnam- type reaction in the kids of today. It's like my generation is neutered or something. We just don't do shit.

@materialgirlnyc RE the numbness of today - one difference is that back then we saw the casualties of Vietnam in all their gore on our TV screens every night and the coffins of our young soldiers coming back home. Today, that is all censored, the censoring started with GHW Bush, Pres Bush 1. Another difference is our educational system including post-secondary has been effectively crippled. In the sixties millions of middle class kids went to college & had their consciousness raised.
@materialgirlnyc The Vietnam-type reaction should have been adopted by the Iraqi people in the fall of 1990 after Saddam brutally invaded Kuwait and ANNEXED that tiny nation that had a seat in the U.N. You peaceniks always want the western nations to be pacifistic yet you same peaceniks sympathize with the Saddams and the Osamas of the world. Remember "Ho, Ho, Ho Chi Minh!"?
I am friends with an self-professed "Old Hippie". What's sad is that over the course of time...that free thinking and fight of oppression by 'the man' has turned to typical staunch liberal. Now they're buying into the Dems bill of goods just because of what it used to be - like in the 60s.
They can't even break free of those attitudes to look objectively at the notion that Dems and Repubs are ALL the same thing...politicians = liars. Do they actually think that people in power have the best interest of the people in mind??? NEVER has been - NEVER will be! Think for yourselves people!!!
I gave this segment of Rubin's appearance on Donahue nearly 40 years ago the title YIPPIES FOR NIXON. I chose this title because proto-Marxist like Jerry Rubin and Abbie Hoffman helped Nixon and seriously damaged the anti-Vietnam-War Movement just like Cindy Sheehan, Rosie O'Donell, and Michael Moore damage the current anti-Iraq-War movement (hint: they openly sympathize with Islamic terrorists), Same goes for Jesse Ventura. The Right have their traitors too,
the yippies were all about fun- ' nam was a morbid issue, and they helped end the war and had a blast doin' it!! I don't know what yer talkin, there, dwend- were you around even back then??
Jerry Rubin was a rare person he even said that he was one of the only people who have ran around naked and said it's ok to make money. He didn't sellout he matured but still fucked with the system in a moderate way instead of a radical liberal way even Abbie Hoffman has said that Rubin didn't sellout
Yippies are right here. They are in the people at home and smoking and watching this. Freedom is in laughter. So stop cutting your hair and let people know who you are.
They weren't called yippies, they were called hippies. Yippies were in the 80's and into making money. Hippies were into drugs, protest, music and against the government and war. Phil was so uncool.
gmnorr, you're thinking about "Yuppies." "Yippies" were a group which could be included in the general grouping "Hippies." Jerry Ruben and Abbie Hoffmen were among the icons of that group.
Jerry Rubin was a spoiled little brat who never got enough attention so he committed crimes and played the fool to get attention. His warped little mind took him to an unceremonious death. He won't be missed.
This was a just a few years after Israel attacked the USS Liberty trying to get us involved with their 1967 war with Egypt. These Zionists, Rubin, Hoffman and Leary were all CIA plants. I could not see it back then but it is very clear now. The whole drug movement and free love was nothing but a big government psyop. You want to see a real American hero protester that didn't go around blowing up buildings? Watch the video with Frank Zappa being grilled on Crossfire.
You wouldnt actually get this today. Bill o' Reilly wouldnt let anybody get a word in edgeways. Donahue isnt half as mean-spirited and angry... I see the word "kook" appear in reference to Jerry Rubin in the comments area. I think the worst thing I could accuse Rubin of is lack of subtlety. "Kook" seems to be the popular word in this era. It used to be "heretic" in earlier times.
I was focusing more on how Phil Donahue has changed over the decades. O'Reilly did not cut off Donahue by the way but he just attacked Cindy Sheehan's radical anti-war views --- like Jerry Rubin of 1970 --- seemed more pro-enemy than pro-peace. I would not say that Jerry Rubin was a kook and I liked his strategy of fusing the hippies with the politicos but I have no use for anti-war activists who refer to our soldiers as murerders... back then... or today. They only harm the anti-war stance.
They had become Yuppies. Many of the radicals and hippies of the sixties by the late seventies had become the forefront of a new generation of consumers. Subsequently, they pursued jobs that gave them access to lots of money and were big time supporters of Reagan.
by that time they no longer existed. The Yippies faded to nothing quickly after the end of the 1960s Jerry Rubin became a stockbroker and businessman. The only real group left after 73 was the Weather Underground who gave up peace and tried to start a revolution which failed just like most things from the sixties
If anything Rubin comes off as O'Reilly, pitching his book, of course no one would call him a capitalist pig. Then he says they only "right wing liberal books". WTF?
We the People are the Free Press! We are building the verbalmilitia. tv library at justin. tv in order to save the clips from YOUtube to more and more sites and then our hard drives so that when they want to have internet2, we will have internet3 already ready to go !!! What about Brezhnev's war crimes? Did the Soviet Union ever have an anti-Soviet-anti-war radical on TV like in the United States? No. The names of Soviet versions of people like Jerry Rubin, the Berrigan Brothers and Jane Fond would certainly not be found in the headlines. Yippies like paperacknovel would be find either in Siberia or in mental institutions. By the way, Jerry Rubin admitted in this show that a Yippie regime would send conservatives to mental wards.
neutraleyes66 -- why are you bringing the Soviet Union into this? Brezhnev and the Soviet Union had their own share of ills; many ills; as does the current Russian regime -- but that has nothing to do with this piece. Jane Fonda was an a-hole but that has nothing to do with this piece.
I am commenting on this piece; and what I see in this piece is that Jerry Rubin is/was a fantastic talker and thinker, and blew Donahue off the screen. He played with him, whimsically & with direct logic.
god what an idiot. thats why i can't take the democratics seriously, not much has changed. and all the crackheads and auntjemima's down home think that he knows what he's talking about.
Say what you want pal, but rubin and abbie were funny, good looking, and spoke to my generation. Much more than "Phil-led " with shit Donahue or david suskind
Sure avoided the question about his actions aiding NIxon before shilling his book Do It!. That book he is touting was illustrated by myself, yet Ballentine Books told me that Rubin took that money for himself. I never was paid. So when he is talking about steal this book, i find it pretty ironic.
Not a HIppie. A politico who used the "freques", in my opinion.
THE YOUNG PEOPLE TODAY HAVE FAILED, NO ONE CARES ABOUT ANYTHING ANYMORE!! I hope there are some young people out there, like myself, who feel the same. Yippie Power!~
everything jerry says makes sense. he may have hurt his credibility but if you really listen to him you get a good insight into why he and people like him do what they do.
hilarious you think calling me a communist is any more insulting than calling me a capitalist. to me either of those terms are neutral. anyone who blindly follows an ism or hates over it is an under educated moron in my book.
i'd rather not get into the whole "what would they do" argument because both sides of the fence use exactly that to push their agenda.
rubin fucked up here. he refuses to enter a rational discussion and makes an embarassment of himself. a lot of what he says is true, but he doesn't represent himself well. I suspect he's on coke or amphetamines or something. He should have followed the example that people like Dave Dellinger made.
Really the guy is wearing a thing around his head, and Phil Donahue both are dicksons. Can I dig it, yeh dude I dig it. Mary Jane is where its at. but that dude with the thing around his head made today's rip off possible but by a totally different group of people, Dig.
Hes right though. These people that put on these suits and ties and speak so lightly and such are the ones that have no backbone. They are not worth being listened to. The people with the anger and attitude such as Jerry, or MLK, or Tupac Shakur are the ones worth listening too. They have been through it, they know what they are talking about. They are the ones who are sick of all this bullshit.
Both Jerry Rubin and Cindy Sheehan harmed that public relations of both anti-war movements and Donahue and O'Reilly made that point. O'Reilly takes liberal positions like the environment and greed in the oil industry --- but he really goes after the Left-wing loons b/c they have formed an unholy alliance with Radical Islam.
Poor Phil. I'd like to think that Rubin helped Phil become the humanitarian that he would be one day. Phil is NOTHING' like Bill 'Oh Really'! Jerry was good for the necessary changes of the 60's and 70's. He forced the issue, along with thousands of others, so that we could 'ALL' have a voice today. The best thing that Phil could do was to just sit and listen, because Jerry represented what was out there at the time.
No, Donohue was trying to have a serious discussion while Rubin just kept rambling on, interrupting, and refusing to allow Donohue to get a word in so as to further his agenda. After watching this, I'm suddenly ashamed of the liberal role in the 60s.
god damn you guys you turned peace into a political statement about mccain and palin and obama and bush well real peace isnt about leader ship its about a revolution save your political shit for a political video
In December 1969, Rubin took sides for, and spoke very highly of Charles Manson, whom he described as a "revolutionay martyr" (!!!!!), although he admitted being a little annoyed by Manson's " incredible male chauvinism". Rubin also omitted to admit that his "revolutionary martyr" was a self-proclaimed Hitler fan who hated Jews and Blacks. So much for the martyr......
He also said 'DO DO DO Figure out what will come after. Until then, DO DO DO!' He also sold out to wall st. He was actually a Nazi as well! He was in the SS! You, my friend, are the first to have found the Manson info, and now all of this message is NULL and VOID, because of how straight fucking AWESOME YOU ARE!!!!
this man is just a child. i mean, responsible, reasonable, wise children have minds of revolutionaries. but this man is just a joke. a complete undecisive joke. ...................if only he didnt treat the revolution like a damn meatball, then maybe he wouldve got somewhere. rather than on a windshield of some motherfuckers car.
Or maybe hes one of the only few who have been through something and have had enough of this bullshit. He wouldnt have lasted because the people without backbones are the ones who control everything. Those are the people who have others do the dirty shit for'em. Those are the people who have no voice but have political power. The people with the voice are the ones worth following. (Only if they have the voice that speaks for whats right.)
I agree with you that Rubin went through a major change. Rubin always claimed he was never as radical as he portrayed himself in the 60's. He eventually became the worst kind of capitalist, a selfish schemer who cared only for himself and bottom line profits.
Abbie hoffman exposed Reagen for his dirty money schemes, along with his friend jerry rubin. Now. ABBIE HOFFMAN was still a fulltime rebellious activist and he travelled under the name Berry Freed. And with Rubin they had debates between yippie vs yuppie. but in the end rubin stated
"I would be copping out if I stayed in the myth of the '60s."
I understand the sentiment of the antagonistic views of rubin. Hwvr, rubin is far more than just that facade, you must realize that by that time-early70's-the war tolls were horrendous. the steps made in the 60's seemed to have disappeared. rubin's sentiment is clear at 4:23. this is what he/them are really about. i would ask those merely looking at his abuse towards the mainstream media-donahue-to consider the time period. it seems outrageous? now but then you must look at from his pt of view
FredFredBurger53, it is titled "Yippies For Nixon" because their antics helped get Nixon re-elected. Remember the hard hats rioting against the Yippies? Donahue was totally correct.
possibly plastic refers to the idea that one is pre-packaged by the mainstream. The predominating (more conservative usually...) sentiment of a plastic is one who has no real identity except that of what is told to them.
What are you guys talking about? Jerry's not being on trial, His Country is(at that time) look at all the corruption the american government committed during those dreadful years! It's ridiculous!
Jerry Rubin was just a stoned fanatic. Fanatics usually don not understand the philosophies they are trying to follow in it´s entirety, and besides he was always stoned!
It would have been a good idea for him to read Dostoyevski´s "The devils". He wanted a revolution to "change" the US, yet he didn´t know what kind of revolution he wanted, and in the end he became what he hated. He wanted the generlas shot by their own soldiers...
How come that furfag Pinky makes more sense then those blow hards on stage? People were so emotionally and mentally retarded in the 1970's....no research what so ever.
Ha...I was going to make the same comment. What a weird world we live in.
I resect Jerry's thoughts at the time, but all in all I think Phil ended up coming much farther in terms of critical thinking and dissent. I think, mostly because of the generation gap, that Phil's path to truth was more difficult and he ulimately came farther along it than Jerry did in the end.

Today, that is all censored, the censoring started with GHW Bush, Pres Bush 1. Another difference is our educational system including post-secondary has been effectively crippled. In the sixties millions of middle class kids went to college & had their consciousness raised.
Monkeephilia 1 year ago

KDub1963 2 years ago

He didn't sellout he matured but still fucked with the system in a moderate way instead of a radical liberal way even Abbie Hoffman has said that Rubin didn't sellout

DangerousBastard 2 years ago 2
I was focusing more on how Phil Donahue has changed over the decades. O'Reilly did not cut off Donahue by the way but he just attacked Cindy Sheehan's radical anti-war views --- like Jerry Rubin of 1970 --- seemed more pro-enemy than pro-peace. I would not say that Jerry Rubin was a kook and I liked his strategy of fusing the hippies with the politicos but I have no use for anti-war activists who refer to our soldiers as murerders... back then... or today. They only harm the anti-war stance.

Neutraleyes66 2 years ago 2

jimfarrowlove 2 years ago 2
They had become Yuppies. Many of the radicals and hippies of the sixties by the late seventies had become the forefront of a new generation of consumers. Subsequently, they pursued jobs that gave them access to lots of money and were big time supporters of Reagan.
Paulmancieri67 2 years ago 2
by that time they no longer existed. The Yippies faded to nothing quickly after the end of the 1960s Jerry Rubin became a stockbroker and businessman. The only real group left after 73 was the Weather Underground who gave up peace and tried to start a revolution which failed just like most things from the sixties

And he hit the nail on the head with the marijuana smoking in Vietnam. And Nixon's war crimes.

Neutraleyes66 2 years ago
neutraleyes66 -- why are you bringing the Soviet Union into this? Brezhnev and the Soviet Union had their own share of ills; many ills; as does the current Russian regime -- but that has nothing to do with this piece. Jane Fonda was an a-hole but that has nothing to do with this piece.
I am commenting on this piece; and what I see in this piece is that Jerry Rubin is/was a fantastic talker and thinker, and blew Donahue off the screen. He played with him, whimsically & with direct logic.

Neutraleyes66 3 years ago

It would have been a good idea for him to read Dostoyevski´s "The devils". He wanted a revolution to "change" the US, yet he didn´t know what kind of revolution he wanted, and in the end he became what he hated. He wanted the generlas shot by their own soldiers...

I resect Jerry's thoughts at the time, but all in all I think Phil ended up coming much farther in terms of critical thinking and dissent. I think, mostly because of the generation gap, that Phil's path to truth was more difficult and he ulimately came farther along it than Jerry did in the end.
