it's obvious this craft is made from metal or some other heavy composite. what did they expect? God never intended for anything manmade to fly in africa.
How can you say that you don't know why they aborted the takeoff when you see that the landing gear was glowing red and sparkling? Isn't it obvious what happend?
camera man did a good job pretty close to the action, good thing he aborted that take off....too many damn birds flying around there, maybe gets some hawks around
@wilsonjon feathering a prop is a procedure that is usually performed if you have an engine failure in a multi engine prop aircraft, it's basically where the prop blades are rotated so they are in line with the passing airflow, so they are not generating any thrust, but not creating much drag. If the pilots had simply feathered the props, there is no way the aircraft could have stopped in that shorter distance, from what I can tell, it looks like they were reversed
@wilsonjohn don't understand your question? you don't think they feathered their props, or you don't know what feathering the props means, or you know what feathering means and you disadgree that they did it?
Looks like he hit a line of debris which blew all his tires, most noticeably his starboard strut, whose tires both caught on fire. Truly a great job by the pilots, who reversed thrust on their turbines and feathered the props. The fact that they had an 8,000 foot runway and a soft apron didn't hurt, either. That IL-18 used up one of its cat lives!
looks to me that the pilot run out of runway for take off, count how many seconds from the moment the dust blew off behind the propeller (from the beginning of the take off) usually an aircraft takes off after 40 seconds max after the full throttle but the pilot obviously aborted on about 35 seconds and running short of run way.
@Alexvideoclip: what striked me is that he didn't rotate, he had no visible flaps on, and it was windy yes BUT, look at the dust around the plane at the end of the runway... he was taking off with BACK WIND!! So, he he was a bit overloaded, underpowered, with the wind in his tail... result is there! But good job on saving the plane anyway!
One of the oldest planes park in the warld is in Afrika with no techsupport and higest crash exidents. I'm sorry for russin , ukrainian and other pilots who signed to wark in that part of warld...
@CRsBeem I'm sorry but what?? with the length of runway left there is no way he should have tried to stop there even with a blown tire, he could have done an emergency landing but that could have been so much worse here. Also, I love how all the safety people first get their cameras out to take photos hahaha
it is not zimbabwe. the aircraft has an angolan flag. this incident took place in cabinda, a province of angola.
but this should not come as a surprise especially for us who work in myriad african airfields and deal with all types of russian and western made aircraft
Thank god that the end of the runway was MOD and it just went right in to it cuz other wise it could of been some serious explosion ... thnx for sharing very intresting videooooo
@rosserver Hey STFU, I would be one of the rednecks your talking about him hating, and I fully see how he could hate idiots like the people i see around me everyday -.-
The strength of the landing gear is amazing when you think of how much force is on them when running into the soft ground, let alone the torque caused from trying to stop. Wow.
The pilot noticed some problem and aborted the takeoff. So, he had to brake. As the plane was fast and the brakes had to work hard, they torched (you can see the smoke in both brakes).
That's pretty interesting... I wonder what happened...Those russian aircraft are some tough planes though. I'm sure they had it flying soon after this.
Russians Pilots are wery skilled but im noy so shore that all the planes (And the fire truck) is in good shape NOTHING WRONG WHIT THAT exept that i think that this is happening more offent then on the american 737 or airbus (Im from norway so i dont realy cares):P:P:P
I love how a video about an aeroplane sparks pure vitriol from everyone. Why is every video, no matter how mundane, full of racist, abusive comments? Weird...
The reason is plainly obvious, the flaps were never set. If you look at the wing it was completely flat. He realized it as he started to pull back on the stick and nothing happened so he hit the brakes.
WOW!! This is an excellent video.. How come you were filming it?? What were you doing there.? Thanks for posting. I invite you to see my video of the fate of a TU-154 (see my profile to access my video)
@Alexvideoclip ... but de wind came from the tail thus very bad to takeoff! See the dust at the end of the runway, it follows the plane instead of going back...!!
Great way to extinguish those burning brakes! :) I wonder if they deliberately pulled off the runway (for easier slowdown) or just ran out of tarmac? P.S.: Surprised to see the old bird still in service (I've only seen one IL-18 ever, and she can still be seen sitting on a pedestal in my city). :)
Looks to me like that all worked as advertised, a stop from V1 doesn't mean that you will necessarily stay on the paved surface, clearly the aircrafthas stopped within the clearway at the end of the runway. The calculation takes into account that you may well use that clearway in a critical stop at V1.
You can hear thetyres on the starboard main gear explodig at 1:22
BTW, nose titles notwithstanding, this is actually not a IL-18 but a (former) IL-22 airborne command post stripped of mission equipment - note the fin tip pod which regular IL-18s do not have
Il-18 is a Russian plane which was an absolute superstar of this generation.A highest quality plane after all possible features.Flew by Il-18 when i was a child.
He meant to do that, he was just parking it at the far end of the filed....his comment after opening the window..."Vlad...Vlad....I told you, you should have changed that tire. Popov is gonna snap when he hears about this"
Camera man was f'n dumb standing there like that. He just barely missed being taken out by rocks batted by the propellers and had they dug in he would have been finished for sure.
I think, to extinguish the wheel fire, it was the best he could do, to bring the plane off from the tarmaced runway to the sand field.
