@ohyewildthong and of course you only picked apart a small portion of what I said to you... nothing to say about heaven sitting around for roughly 97000 years with indifference? didn't think so
@ohyewildthong again with the rudeness. link me this documentary. I know quite enough about Christian theology to know that it is rediculous. if this BBC documentary really disproves the fact that Israel was superstitious it would be a recent finding and so Christopher hitchens would not be intentionally deceiving anyone, correct? still don't see how he's a deceiver
@Ohyewildthong yeah one of the top 5 intellectuals in the public arena, what a fail. he has written 25 books, some of which sold millions, what a fail. he has logic and rationality what a fail. he's beaten every man he's ever debated what a fail
@anthftskk Except he does. He's nothing more than a sophist. Look at his argument for the absurdity of the incarnation. One a superficial level it looks extremely clever. However if you as Plato suggested and strip away the rhetoric you're left with only theological mistruths and historical ignorance. I think Peter Hitchens description of Stephen Fy fits Christ perfecty; "the stupid man's impression of what a clever man is supposed to be".
@Ohyewildthong I hardly think he is a deceiver. Regardless of whether or not you, on a personal level, think his arguments are weak it does not constitute labeling him as a sophist. His arguments about vicarious redemption and the unlikeliness of an intelligent designer in the face of evolution are very well thought out.
@Ohyewildthong I feel like i shouldn't be speaking for him or in his place but what he is saying here is directed at people in general. He does not care if some of the general public wants to have these toys but of course during a live debate any speaker would want the audience to feel emotion or to agree with his or her position. So If you saw him say something about shaking one's faith it was clearly about his audience and readers , not the general public.
@Ohyewildthong Feel free to link me that argument for the absurdity of incarnation. Maybe we will agree. But I do not think I would ever refer to Hitchens as the stupid mans impression of what a clever man is supposed to be because Christopher Hitchens was a very clever and witty writer. And I have never come across a historical inaccuracy that Hitchens endorses or supports in his writings. Feel free to list some
@anthftskk Well you can find the argument in any of the arguments he uses against the existance of God. Why is it flawed? 1. It misrperesents Christian doctorine, he uses the phrase "while Heaven watched unmoved" when of course Christianity believe in a doctorine of revelation. 2. He calls Israel a tribe state to make it seem primitive, ignoring the fact that Israel was, in 1AD, one of the most advanced nations in the world. Want more? I'm running out of characters. As said, a sophist
@Ohyewildthong What he says is that for at least 98,000 years humans have lived on the planet with extreme suffering while, if heaven exists, it watches with complete indifference. There is nothing deceptive about that. If you are a Christian you must believe that to be true. Why? Because we know our species has been here for at least that long and we know that if heaven sent Jesus here to ease suffering it was after 98,000 years of complete indifference without any tangible intervention
@anthftskk Except of course we also believe in the whole idea of prophets. It doesn't just start with Jesus. This is why he misrepresents. And again, judging by your comment, you, like Hitchens, know nothing about history. A recent BBC documentary dispelled the notion they'd believe anything.
@Ohyewildthong I am not sure exactly what you mean by "we also believe in the whole idea of prophets." I do not believe in any prophets. Christianity's prophet was Jesus and that was 2000 years ago according to the bible. 100,000 - 2000 = 98000. There is nothing confusing or deceptive about that. What did I say that misrepresented Israeli history? You only said "you know nothing." What did I say that was wrong? You are not correcting me you are just being rude and saying wrong wrong wrong.
@anthftskk You, like Hitchens, clearly know nothing about Christian theology then. We don't believe that it began with the incarnation, we believe there were a multitude of prophets before hand which culminated in Christ. Each one revealing something more as they came. You were wrong in your assertion that 1st Century Israel was superstitious, as a recent BBC documentary recently disproved.
@Ohyewildthong And as for your second "example"... how do you know what Christopher Hitchens was thinking in his head when he calls Israel a tribe state? Are you saying it was not primitive? The culture of first century Israel was very interested in the supernatural – it was common for people to believe in curses and be controlled by superstitions. They believed, for example, that STDs were curses brought on by promiscuity. Most could not read or write. Is that not primitive?
@Ohyewildthong I think we both know it is extremely primitive when compared to life today. When he refers to the past and historical events in a negative way it is clearly done so to illustrate the fact that religion comes from the infancy of our species. There was no germ theory, there was no knowledge of microorganisms, and they did not understand natural disasters. It was our species' first collective attempt at philosophy, medical care and science and he thinks we do not need it to live.
@Ohyewildthong And finally, going back to what I touched on before, how do you know what was going on in this man's head? Even if the statements that I am making right now or that he has made to his readers were false (hypothetically of course, because i did not say anything that was not true) how would you know that he was a sophist? How would you know that he was purposely deceiving anyone? You wouldn't. Christopher Hitchens was a great man and there is no reason to disrespect him like that.
Secularism was the only thing that allowed you Christians to hide and propagate, but you foolishly put an end to that; without your privacy and hiding, there will hardly be any of you left.
I dropped the toys 45 yrs ago and don't miss them one bit. In fact, I cherish the fact that my kids didn't get the chance to play with them, share them or push others to play with them. Add to that, I am very very pleased and happy that my kids help others to drop the toys and leave them alone. Love the analogy. Hitch is da bomb.
How can any priest justify teaching something that isn't true?

I don't understand why Hitchens never believed in God when he looked at him in the mirror every morning.

Pretty moronic seeing as in other debates Hitchens has said he wants to shake and damage peoples' religious beliefs. Fail.

One more thing: The questioner grossly exaggerates his toys' impact on American. His toys do not bring meaning to 95% of Americans. 85% tops!

@Kailoa36 Wiki that shit, it's like 67% percent tops. That was in 2006 and it's lowered since then.
