As for myself i don't understand how certain ppl dont like this interview or complain about it becuz he is chewing gum or looking to the sky. actually to me this is one of, or thee best interviews i have ever seen. the artist just being his/her self. so so down to earth. i think this is great.
he is chewing gum b/che is nervous believe or not. it is kind of refreshing to know that my favorite singer was so down to earth. also tom joyner now sucks i like him here
Tom: "...that you once seriously thought, or tried to commit suicide."
Marvin's face @ 6:18: "I can't believe this n*gga here just brought that up on camera"
Marvin gives very frank, contemplative answer: "...because I didn't feel loved, I felt useless."
Tom: *silently fills pants while trying to think of something to say*
omg That gum! Marvin's demeanor made me think maybe he was on thorazine or the like. He's obviously in pain, but hopeful. What a waste of that hope was his death.
@mftds13 Now today, it seems that we've created a generic mold for ,say, musicians so that we can take anybody and turn them into a cash cow. In other words, they don't need a brilliant mind to make money, they can just take anybody which makes it easier to make money (Like a factory that produces 10 products a year as opposed to one). So we have a lot of non-brillaint people making albums who either don't like to be open with strangers or they simply have nothing interesting to say.
i swear by him but I gotta agree with you he was obviously high.all the signs are there..............very smooth talking, eyes focused on the ceiling most of the time and then the chewing of the gum without caring that this interview was ging to be seen by the world.but you would agree with me that brother is very sexy and smooth.lord have mercy..................any marvin gaye personality around?
Marvin was unhappy because he couldn't find the right woman to love him or knew how to love him. I believe if Marvin could have found the right woman he would probably be here. He was all about love and when Tammi died I think love died for Marvin as well. I think he loved her!!!
MG - the man is an absolute legend....one of the coolest daddy' o's to have graced the music industry...true legends are always taken away from us at young age..
yea it doesnt bother me though but i never thought he wold be this way he sounds like a white guy no offense he does you know i thought he would have a deep voice and talk funky like: you digg what im sayin or i wear lots of funky threads you know like jj off of good times
Is that Tom Joyner? Anyway, I just listened to his bio on tape, Divided Soul. At the time this interview was done, in 83, he was sooooo messed up on cocaine. This guy was crazy! All the great artists are, I think. Check that book out. It is amazing how you can appear one way outwardly and be such a mess privately. The human being is a true dicotamy.
He was truely an amazing individual, there just somethin about him, that was just so inspiring like to the point where you can actually feel his soul, even by just watching an interview with him..
He seemed like such a cool guy..
Its so tragic, that he was taken from us so early..We Miss You, Marvin..
Marvin really has a lot to teach us about love. I believe the most important thing for a human being to do to be able to function is to feel loved and worth-while. If you don't have knowing, demons can really get you.
he seems kinda like, stoned in this video but idk if he was actually a big pot smoker, i hope he was but i mean marvin gaye was goin through A LOT of shit in 83, and in 84 he died, my mother cried for so long when he died
Marvin snorted a whole lot of coke through his nostrils. In fact, I heard that the medical examiner who looked over Marvin's body said that he had done so much coke that his sinus's looked like ground beef. By the way, notice how different Tom Joyner looks. 26 years can really make a difference, as he looks babyfaced youthful here. WOW!
I agree... he looks really strung out, and very troubled. But he's still sexy to the ladies even in a full blown cocaine addiction, and the gum-chewing thing surprisingly worked.
easily..its the goverment. they can do whatever they want. there was a guy on tv who won over 200 million and he's only gonna see that 50 er somethin liek that..it may be more or less..i cant remember..but on another topic. Marvin Gaye is the king of R&B in my books.
cause Marvin was already in trouble with the IRS by the time "What's Goin On" came out due to owing back taxes. He was in Hawaii at the time before he came back to record that landmark album
Wow. Never knew much about him. A candid interview. Priceless at 6:05 when Tom stops to think about how to pose the topic of suicide. Priceless is Marvin's gaze/moment of silence afterwards, which lets you know he is still struggling with depression. Most priceless is how Tom pauses & looks into Marvin's eyes after M states he felt unloved and useless. Tom's expression, his smile, the nod, his gentle reminder about M's upcoming concert and the pre-showing of all the love? Simply priceless.
I agree with all his comments-especially suicide. It's hard to find meaning when people don't want you, love you you feel "useless." How honest can you be?
I know a lot of people may see Marvin Gaye in this interview & think to them selves " Damn he high as shit " & he just may be, But what I see is a man who experienced life highs & lows & is pretty much beaten up by life's harsh realities. The eyes don't lie even tho he's high you can still see sadness in his eyes & he most likely used drugs as a form of escape, The man had some shit on his mind he was going through something only God knows. Well suffer no more Marvin you're with God now. R.I.P.
i agree with u so much. im looking at this and i feel so much pain coming from him wow. I wish things were better for him. He was such an amazing artist and wonderful man.
I like Marvin, and this is a great interview. I'm sorry that Marvin wasted his money on women, but at least he stuck to his own race, so I admire the Brotha. That gum-schewing is annoying though.
DAMN,I would've loved him 2 the fullest. Maybe in a different lifetime. I'm his #1 fan. I have all his documentaries on DVDs,I know almost everything about him,and he will DEFINITELY be missed. I LOVE U Marvin. RIP My Love. ):
I'm glad Marvin was honest about the attempted suicide. Hey,its best 2 real and let it out. Good 4 him. He had and still has millions of fans who loved him 2 death, and he still felt unloved. He had serious self esteem and self worth issues. I can definitely relate 2 him. 2 much in fact. But anyway,I know he loved them women. I KNOW THIS.
Tom looked Pretty good back then. And NO,(queenschamp),if his jealous ass father would'nt have shot and killed him,he would be here today. Your so stupid. Wow,Marvin was so suave and smooth during that interview. The first thing I noticed was that he was chewing the hell outta that gum. I feel him on that, because I have 2 chew gum EVERYDAY. If I don't have it,I'm miserable.
I think Marvin was a little coked up during this interview. I think if he could have successfully kicked the habit, he might be here today. He went to rehab a couple of times and didn't even finish. I guess there was just so much shit going on with him that he needed something to lean on.
Yes, he was coked up during this interview. Very sad that he wasn't able to kick his drugproblems. The years before, 1981-82 he lived in Belgium, a place at the coast called Oostende. He was quite happy there, and clean. But when he returned to LA in late 1982 he started to use cocaine again. That was the beginning of the end. But I always loved Marvin and his beautiful voice, which came straight from heaven. A beautiful, softspoken and very gifted man. By the way, I'm a white guy from Holland.
Lol Tom looks so different now. Marvin was really trippin . . . or maybe he wasn't. . . it's good to see some of his personality aside from the music. He chews like a cow though not professional at all.
I have always been such a huge fan of Marvin, and he's even funnier and more candid and sophisticated here, it's so sad to see such an honest man couldn't make it though his addictions.
Marvin's younger sister is Zeola Gaye, I wish she would write a book, She was doing a play that starred Keith Washington i don't think it ever came to Los Angeles. I wish somebody would tell Zeola The people who bought her parents home on gramercy stated in an article that they had a dog living in the house, And every time the dog would go in the room where Marvin died it would bark. They also said when they clean up you can feel all the energy that use to take place in the house.
I'm glad i was young at the time of Marvin Gaye's death, So it didn't affect me to bad, But its bothering me now due to the fact my sister was shot and killed. Every time i look up information on Marvin, Its always a different story or borderline speculation. From now on i'm only gonna trust the words of Marvin Gaye's younger sister. @ 2:55 I laughed when Marvin said fast cars and women.
Listening to him talk, not only here but other times, he sounds like he's from another world. His voice certainly sounds like he was from another world.

I have always been such a huge fan of Marvin, and he's even funnier and more candid and sophisticated here, it's so sad to see such an honest man couldn't make it though his addictions.

Gum was probably his way to stop smoking! poor marvin. He was too sensitive for this kind of world.

@PurposeActive My sincerest condolences on your sister's death.

Listening to him talk, not only here but other times, he sounds like he's from another world. His voice certainly sounds like he was from another world.

I love Marvin....but there's this old,old joke: "What did Marvin Snr.say to Marvin just before he shot him? "This is the last 45 you'll ever hear".......
