  • i think he might be trippin on something in this interview.

  • marvin fucking that gum up .....

  • @brandini5000 lol

  • @brandini5000 Yes, he is.

  • yeah....that chewing gum was a big distraction to the interview. it almost ruined it for me.

  • I cant believe that tom joyner once had hair.....lol.

  • that chewing gum was kinda a distraction to the interview.

  • Where is the full interview please?

  • WHAT A GREAT MUSICIAN, HONEST MAN , WHO COULD NOT HAVE LOVED HIM

  • funny how the top comments are about the gum and not him

  • he wouldnt be a role model, but u gotta respect his honesty and his hurt and his truthfulness

  • As for myself i don't understand how certain ppl dont like this interview or complain about it becuz he is chewing gum or looking to the sky. actually to me this is one of, or thee best interviews i have ever seen. the artist just being his/her self. so so down to earth. i think this is great.

  • He was such a charmer!RIP,.....

  • he is chewing gum b/che is nervous believe or not. it is kind of refreshing to know that my favorite singer was so down to earth. also tom joyner now sucks i like him here

  • Man I really wish they would do a Bio-pic for marvin, his story really needs to be told

  • His speaking voice sounds nothing like his singing voice.

  • Great upload, not much of the spoken troubled man around. Thanks.

  • i luuuuuvvvvv marvin - r.i.p. god of soul

  • Tom: "...that you once seriously thought, or tried to commit suicide."

Marvin's face @ 6:18: "I can't believe this n*gga here just brought that up on camera"

Marvin gives very frank, contemplative answer: "...because I didn't feel loved, I felt useless."

Tom: *silently fills pants while trying to think of something to say*

omg That gum! Marvin's demeanor made me think maybe he was on thorazine or the like. He's obviously in pain, but hopeful. What a waste of that hope was his death.

  • He was so cool man... smooth. Love him!

  • Wow he said, "Well I'm Broke". Very candid. We need more artists like him to tell THE TRUTH these days.

  • This man is beautiful - omgoodness! and so honest!

  • He wants a "Sanctified Lady" did anyone else pick that up when he said a 'good girl'

  • well i don't care what anybody says marvin was one of the great genusis that we lost and his music is timeless.

  • he looks like hes a lil high :D but oh well he was amazing!!!!

  • i love this man omg

  • how do you feel about gum

  • I have not seem Marvin in this light, nor heard him speak. Such a down to earth guy. I wish he was my Dad!

  • he was kinda sexy for an older man. I see wome went crazy over him.

  • hes a very relaxed guy lol

  • The thing about I like about Marvin and this interview is that he is very open. Nowadays celebrities lie and duck and dodge questions.

  • @mftds13 Now today, it seems that we've created a generic mold for ,say, musicians so that we can take anybody and turn them into a cash cow. In other words, they don't need a brilliant mind to make money, they can just take anybody which makes it easier to make money (Like a factory that produces 10 products a year as opposed to one). So we have a lot of non-brillaint people making albums who either don't like to be open with strangers or they simply have nothing interesting to say.

  • GREAT MAN

  • Hate listening to people chew gum. Worst thing ever. Love him hate the gum.

  • Exactly. Couldnt agree more.

  • @DesmoNYC Same here.

  • @DesmoNYC

yeah, it's disgusting and rude to others. Also, what's with the constant looks towards the sky ??

  • @friedmann1959 he probably just high,we was not really like that...

  • Love the dude, but he's clearly high as a kite

  • i swear by him but I gotta agree with you he was obviously high.all the signs are there..............very smooth talking, eyes focused on the ceiling most of the time and then the chewing of the gum without caring that this interview was ging to be seen by the world.but you would agree with me that brother is very sexy and smooth.lord have mercy..................any marvin gaye personality around?

  • Tom Joyner interviews M.G. Classic

  • Marvin was unhappy because he couldn't find the right woman to love him or knew how to love him. I believe if Marvin could have found the right woman he would probably be here. He was all about love and when Tammi died I think love died for Marvin as well. I think he loved her!!!

  • he was never datin tammi they was just close musically ...i dont believe marvin really wanted 2 settle down he loved women and sex

  • Comment removed

  • excellent interview, he was a funny guy!

    We love you Marvin!

  • so stoned

  • Even the way he chewed gum was phenomenal

  • @MistaMistaOnline lol..cool..he was an amazing heart, and soul and voice. No one will ever come close to Marvin.

  • God called for marvin to come to heaven. All the good lengends always gotta go. Marvin Gaye is my favorite lengend..

  • MG - the man is an absolute legend....one of the coolest daddy' o's to have graced the music industry...true legends are always taken away from us at young age..

  • Comment removed

  • its funny how he's chewing the gum

  • punch in the search bar, Russ and Ralph disscussing marvin gaye, you'll learn more about the gum chewing!~ they were Important to the Motown Magic!!

  • RIP :' (

  • i love how honest these interviews were back in the day. it makes marvin seem just like us and un- exclusive. (if thats a word)

  • hes so sexy

  • woah ok he's not how i expected him to be

  • Love it!!!

  • DAMN!!! I didnt know Tom Joyner interviewd Marvin Gaye??!!!

  • he`s smacking all the time...horrible noise!

    but he´s very cool

  • yea it doesnt bother me though but i never thought he wold be this way he sounds like a white guy no offense he does you know i thought he would have a deep voice and talk funky like: you digg what im sayin or i wear lots of funky threads you know like jj off of good times

  • i know its so weird!

  • thank you someone who agrees with me

  • Not all of us talk slang, Joshua.

  • Is that Tom Joyner? Anyway, I just listened to his bio on tape, Divided Soul. At the time this interview was done, in 83, he was sooooo messed up on cocaine. This guy was crazy! All the great artists are, I think. Check that book out. It is amazing how you can appear one way outwardly and be such a mess privately. The human being is a true dicotamy.

  • damn i expected his voice to sound deeper but his voice sounds humble

  • Simply Genius ,, caught up in babylon .. Jah Bless !

  • Man Marvin is so underated at times..

He was truely an amazing individual, there just somethin about him, that was just so inspiring like to the point where you can actually feel his soul, even by just watching an interview with him..

He seemed like such a cool guy..

Its so tragic, that he was taken from us so early..We Miss You, Marvin..

R.I.P. To The Real King of Soul..

    Marvin Pentz Gaye Jr.

  • jesus someone should have snatched that gum out of his mouth.

  • yea marvin a fool..he chewin that gum like micheal jordan

  • wuahahahaha one of the funniest comments on youtube i ever read loool!

'oh u gonna wid me'' bless your heart'' hahah

  • marvin is the man

  • you aint neva lied..i wish i could have met him

  • Wow, his septum looks terrible.

  • lol!

  • 0:13 "if i'm sexy, if i feel hot 'n horny or sumthin', i'll write a horny album" - LMAO at least he's being honest about it =D love ya, marv

  • "being an honest soul"~

  • Tortured genius took its form in the person and mind of Marvin Pentz Gaye Jr.

  • Marvin really has a lot to teach us about love. I believe the most important thing for a human being to do to be able to function is to feel loved and worth-while. If you don't have knowing, demons can really get you.

  • Yeah...baby you were killing and working that gum over! Just sexy! RIP Sweetheart!!

  • nice interview. but that gum chewingI can feel it in my mouth.

  • hahaha, Tom Joyner, you muthafucka!

  • 1 year b 4 he died

  • the gum Marvin," got to give it up", was that a song by him?

  • Hes so sexy r.i.p. Marvin

  • he seems kinda like, stoned in this video but idk if he was actually a big pot smoker, i hope he was but i mean marvin gaye was goin through A LOT of shit in 83, and in 84 he died, my mother cried for so long when he died

  • Marvin snorted a whole lot of coke through his nostrils. In fact, I heard that the medical examiner who looked over Marvin's body said that he had done so much coke that his sinus's looked like ground beef. By the way, notice how different Tom Joyner looks. 26 years can really make a difference, as he looks babyfaced youthful here. WOW!

  • How could marvin gaye be broke??

  • Cocaine, marijuana, booze, women, and taxes.

  • he looks so strung out...this must be the pinacle of his troubles

  • I agree... he looks really strung out, and very troubled. But he's still sexy to the ladies even in a full blown cocaine addiction, and the gum-chewing thing surprisingly worked.

  • he really liked that gum that he was chewing on apparently lol

  • They don't make gum like that no more..

  • on a human level we can only aspire to be this cool. absolutely calm and cool with so much attention

  • this is the defenition of cool.

  • how does someone owe the government 4 million dollars, ?????

  • LMAO!!!!!!

  • easily..its the goverment. they can do whatever they want. there was a guy on tv who won over 200 million and he's only gonna see that 50 er somethin liek that..it may be more or less..i cant remember..but on another topic. Marvin Gaye is the king of R&B in my books.

  • cause Marvin was already in trouble with the IRS by the time "What's Goin On" came out due to owing back taxes. He was in Hawaii at the time before he came back to record that landmark album

  • i think he is sooooo sexy

  • ME too!

  • 'i don't feel like being miserable' ahhh haha

  • Anybody else think he was tweeked while doing this interview?

  • Wow. Never knew much about him. A candid interview. Priceless at 6:05 when Tom stops to think about how to pose the topic of suicide. Priceless is Marvin's gaze/moment of silence afterwards, which lets you know he is still struggling with depression. Most priceless is how Tom pauses & looks into Marvin's eyes after M states he felt unloved and useless. Tom's expression, his smile, the nod, his gentle reminder about M's upcoming concert and the pre-showing of all the love? Simply priceless.

  • Ditto, ditto, ditto, Sunnydeux! I seriously felt the intensity of that moment!

  • lol he looks so mellow. lol...I love u marvin

  • Legend!

His speaking voice reminds me of Q-Tips from A Tribe Called Quest haha

  • That must be some good gum, cause he is killin it...and Tom Joyner!? wow??

  • lol yea

  • soo mellow , damn. so cool

  • I LOVE MARVIN SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Notice everyone laughing when he mentions love and marriage is miserable and he is still on point. That is so sad.

  • I agree with all his comments-especially suicide. It's hard to find meaning when people don't want you, love you you feel "useless." How honest can you be?

  • It doesn't mean you do it but it's the most dark place to exist at that place. I feel for him as i am there myself.

  • Marvin was provocative. I likethat

  • I really like this interview!

  • god rest his soul

  • im his #1 fan

  • I'm his # 1 fan, you're number 2

  • he didnt stick to his own race he dated a white woman the entire time he was in excile in europe! thats just plain ignorant to say such a thing.

  • alexporter: maybe he wanted to try something new or maybe he was tired of Black women for awhile. He did love Black women so that's all that matters.

  • I know a lot of people may see Marvin Gaye in this interview & think to them selves " Damn he high as shit " & he just may be, But what I see is a man who experienced life highs & lows & is pretty much beaten up by life's harsh realities. The eyes don't lie even tho he's high you can still see sadness in his eyes & he most likely used drugs as a form of escape, The man had some shit on his mind he was going through something only God knows. Well suffer no more Marvin you're with God now. R.I.P.

  • i agree with u so much. im looking at this and i feel so much pain coming from him wow. I wish things were better for him. He was such an amazing artist and wonderful man.

  • i miss marvin.

he looks out of it in this interview. his eyes are glazed over and red

  • Very charismatic man!! He seems to be really cool and open minded.

  • I love all of Marvin's music thanks.

  • he was very pure and real bro.....we could have used his great talent today....they just dont make em like they use to bro

  • I agree man.

  • I AGREE WITH U 1000%

  • Happy Birthday Marvin. I Love u Baby. (:

  • DAMN,I would've loved him 2 the fullest. Maybe in a different lifetime. I'm his #1 fan. I have all his documentaries on DVDs,I know almost everything about him,and he will DEFINITELY be missed. I LOVE U Marvin. RIP My Love. ):

  • I'm glad Marvin was honest about the attempted suicide. Hey,its best 2 real and let it out. Good 4 him. He had and still has millions of fans who loved him 2 death, and he still felt unloved. He had serious self esteem and self worth issues. I can definitely relate 2 him. 2 much in fact. But anyway,I know he loved them women. I KNOW THIS.

  • Tom looked Pretty good back then. And NO,(queenschamp),if his jealous ass father would'nt have shot and killed him,he would be here today. Your so stupid. Wow,Marvin was so suave and smooth during that interview. The first thing I noticed was that he was chewing the hell outta that gum. I feel him on that, because I have 2 chew gum EVERYDAY. If I don't have it,I'm miserable.

  • I figured that was Tom Joyner. Damn he sure has changed. What the hell happened!!!

  • thank you so much for posting this!

marvin might just be the coolest guy to have ever lived

  • Indeed!

  • look at tom boy did he have hair and was he young marvin was always cool

  • Very honest man

  • I think Marvin was a little coked up during this interview. I think if he could have successfully kicked the habit, he might be here today. He went to rehab a couple of times and didn't even finish. I guess there was just so much shit going on with him that he needed something to lean on.

  • Yes, he was coked up during this interview. Very sad that he wasn't able to kick his drugproblems. The years before, 1981-82 he lived in Belgium, a place at the coast called Oostende. He was quite happy there, and clean. But when he returned to LA in late 1982 he started to use cocaine again. That was the beginning of the end. But I always loved Marvin and his beautiful voice, which came straight from heaven. A beautiful, softspoken and very gifted man. By the way, I'm a white guy from Holland.

  • that fuckinggggggg gummmmmmmmmmm ........ LOL

  • lol..tom joyner

  • dat nigga tom joyner lookin like......"man if dis nigga dont shut tha fuck up wit dat gum,im bout to slap his ass."

  • o yea and marriage...MISERABLE....sex...MARVELOUS!!! Marvin Gaye=real nigga

  • yeah you said it,

    Marvin Gaye=real nigga

  • Lol Tom looks so different now. Marvin was really trippin . . . or maybe he wasn't. . . it's good to see some of his personality aside from the music. He chews like a cow though not professional at all.

  • wow, he was very much on drugs...and that chewing gum...well, i like his music anyway :-)

  • Marvin will always be the MAN!!!!

  • putin il fait du bruit avec son malabar ^^

  • he is also just so honest...i have never seen so much honesty...what a charming great man

  • too cool.

  • Is it just me ....or both of them high,lol....I could be wrong.,.but look again if you didn't catch it the first time.

  • hahah!

  • That was a pretty cool interview. Marvin is the man, he tells it like it is.

  • This is a rare interview, Tom with hair

  • DAMN THATS TOM JOYNER

  • both these guys are fucken sexy as hell

  • SPIT OUT THAT GUM!

  • He should have stayed his ass in Belgium, he's lit up here,

  • I have always been such a huge fan of Marvin, and he's even funnier and more candid and sophisticated here, it's so sad to see such an honest man couldn't make it though his addictions.

  • Gum was probably his way to stop smoking! poor marvin. He was too sensitive for this kind of world.

  • so true..i had no idea(until i saw this)that marvin was so sensitive..poor thing.

  • gum!!!!!!!

  • marvin and that damn gum..lol!

  • i LUV THIS MARVIN WAS SEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEXY. TOM WAS HOLDING HIS OWN.

  • Love the fact that he was so honest, great piece of history right here, may Marvin rest in peace.

  • Jeez what a great tip to stick your gum behind your ear!!! keep the ears clean and you always have a gum ...on you!

  • Marvin's younger sister is Zeola Gaye, I wish she would write a book, She was doing a play that starred Keith Washington i don't think it ever came to Los Angeles. I wish somebody would tell Zeola The people who bought her parents home on gramercy stated in an article that they had a dog living in the house, And every time the dog would go in the room where Marvin died it would bark. They also said when they clean up you can feel all the energy that use to take place in the house.

  • I'm glad i was young at the time of Marvin Gaye's death, So it didn't affect me to bad, But its bothering me now due to the fact my sister was shot and killed. Every time i look up information on Marvin, Its always a different story or borderline speculation. From now on i'm only gonna trust the words of Marvin Gaye's younger sister. @ 2:55 I laughed when Marvin said fast cars and women.

  • @PurposeActive My sincerest condolences on your sister's death.

  • so awesome.... and so fucked up. he is such a freak.

here my dear is SUCH an awesome album.

  • Listening to him talk, not only here but other times, he sounds like he's from another world. His voice certainly sounds like he was from another world.

  • that gum musta been really really good!...lol, but the interview was one of the best i've seen of him. thanks 4 posting.
