I live in this little called St. Francisville, IL. It is true that this used be a railroad bridge. It used to swing open in the middle to allow steam boats to go through. This bridge is a historic part of our town. It now a toll bridge in which we are using the money for repairs and to eventually build a bridge. The state will not pay for one so the city took it upon themselves to raise money for it. If we did not have this bridge, it is about 40 miles to Indiana where most of us work.
One side does have a yield sign, but you basically turn on your headlights, or brights at night before you cross. Occasionally someone forces another car to back off the bridge.
That's a pretty dumb way to travel. I think they should make another bridge right next to it. I bet there could be a terrible accident some day. That's a nice looking bridge though.
@giggleblaggle Its been that way for alot of years and I dont think i have ever heard of anyone having a reck on it yet. You slow down quite a bit when you get on it and its a straight shot so its not like you are going to miss someone coming right at you.
@giggleblaggle One lane bridges are very common, and very practical in a light traffic situation like this. Parkiepu is right, do you have the money to build a new one?

as you can see the roadway was practically built on the old Wabash right-of-way, bridge and all. everything raised.

It's a town population 800. The system generally works. And they sure don't have money for another bridge.
