The writer have set the stage by giving her the background of a adopted girl who has no money or an (living)aristocrates family. That is why a marriage between her and the grandson is opposed, and that is also why nobody REALLY cares about her.

Low self esteem girl? The low self esteem one is the one who enjoy this fake life, not trying to fight with it like Dai Ngoc.

The point that you're missing, is that it's a love romance taken place in a smallminded, bourgeois community full of social restrictions,hypocrisy and backstabbing. The character of DN is designed as a sensitive individual that can not ignore the phony pretence of everybody around her. She's been given the role of a martyr by the writer so that her personnal struggle at the same time stands as a symbol for the struggle against the SYSTEM.

I think that the notion that "she always gives everybody a hard time" is hard to swallow for anyone who profoundly understands the author's intention. At the same time it is a notion that actually indicates/ betrays one's inability or perhaps one's unwillingness to perceive the conflicts and personnal agenda as the social reality rather than just the facade.

TV is just so cute, I like her a lot. I really don't know what BN sees in DN, she always gives him (and everybody who cares for her) a hard time.
